Do you reckon it's fine? It's done all the time with blasters, but why not with anything else? I've recently cooked up the following fit:
[Harbinger, Solo]
Focused Medium Pulse Laser II, Imperial Navy Multifrequency M Focused Medium Pulse Laser II, Imperial Navy Multifrequency M Focused Medium Pulse Laser II, Imperial Navy Multifrequency M Heavy Pulse Laser II, Imperial Navy Multifrequency M Heavy Pulse Laser II, Imperial Navy Multifrequency M Heavy Pulse Laser II, Imperial Navy Multifrequency M Heavy Pulse Laser II, Imperial Navy Multifrequency M [Empty High slot]
Y-T8 Overcharged Hydrocarbon I Microwarpdrive J5b Phased Prototype Warp Scrambler I X5 Prototype I Engine Enervator Sensor Booster II, Scan Resolution
Damage Control II Energized Adaptive Nano Membrane II Energized Adaptive Nano Membrane II 1600mm Reinforced Rolled Tungsten Plates I Heat Sink II Heat Sink II
Medium Trimark Armor Pump I Medium Trimark Armor Pump I Medium Trimark Armor Pump I
Valkyrie II x5
Obviously, the fit needs some changes. I may replace some Heavy Pulses with more Focused Medium Pulses in order to fit that high slot, and probably replace the sebo.
Comparing the guns - Focused Medium Pulse Laser: 6.75+3.75km range, 0.112 tracking Heavy Pulse Laser: 7.5+5km, 0.102 tracking
All out Heavy Pulses would force me to an 800mm plate, and make the Damage Control meta. All out Focused Medium Pulses would leave me with 20% powergrid to spare, and less dps.
So, is mixing fine if all guns operate at the same range and receive damage bonuses? |

It's not ideal, but it's not criminal either. If you find the benefits outweigh the small variation in range and tracking, go for it.
I believe the Harbinger, in particular, benefits from this. You've chosen a very typical example. |

This is particularly common with blaster frigs and cruisers. It's not uncommon to see a nearly full rack of neutrons/ions, with an ion/electron tagged on the end for fitting purposes. |

Yeah. Unless you have something in mind to fill the spare fitting, might as well get as much DPS out of your ship as possible. |

Yes this kind of gun mixing is fine.
You will still hear "Don't mix guns noob", but it's only noobs that will be saying that. |

That's toward long range guns in pve. The range difference among short range guns, especially blasters, are much smaller, thus it's not as big an issue. |

The other advantage lasers have in this situation is that with their wide range of crystals you can use different crystals to get the same optimals for your guns. |

I'm of the firm belief the only time mixing guns is with blasters, (3 Ions 5 electrons on a dual rep hype for example) to get the most damage, as your range is all kinds of terrible no matter what the size is.
Generally mixing longer range guns in with shorter is balancing the different optimal and falloffs of the guns, if your not careful you could be loosing a lot of potential out of the shorter range smaller guns
Though in your case this problem is easily mitigated with lasers 1 second reload time to keep both in optimal at all times. |

Yoeh, its ok if you aee mixing different sizes of the same class, as long as they are in the same general range class. Dont do blasters and rails on the sme ship though.
On of the most famous pvp video series (by Kil2) has a perfect example. One of the ships he flew alot was a Mega fit kinda like this:
5xElectron 2xIon Large Neut
Propmod, web, scra, cap booster
LAR x1, 2x 1600 RTP, EANM, Mag Sta, DCU.
I dont have eft here, but i am pretty sure that is close. It was a very successful ship. |
