I'm a tad bit out of the loop with the newest pc hardware. Can I get a little help?
What I am wondering is what motherboards/CPU's fit the following categories:
Best overall: Best Value: Recomended:
Also, if you got any preference in video cards, feel free to inclue info.
Many thx

Edited by: keepiru on 23/04/2006 22:44:09 Best OCers mobos are DFIs, for more budget mobos abit or ASUS? Im quite happy with my A8R32-MVP, teething-troubles nonwithstanding, but if you dont mind an active nb cooler i would go for the DFI, unless yure strapped for cash.
Best overall and value cpus are still AMD... just get w/e you can afford. 3800+ is a cheap way to get a dual-core cpu.
As to the GFX, from cheapest to most expensive, what i would get: 6600(GT) -> X1600XT -> 6800GS -> 7900GT -> X1900XT(X)/7900GTX (ATI has more raw power but makes loads of heat and noise)
dont let the fanboys of either make distract you with the bollox, theyre all pretty damn good cards these days, and both makes pull out the odd stinker of a driver. ----------------

Get AMD and only AMD
(although the next generation of Intel look very promising, but they arent out yet)
In terms of graphics cards (I like ATI) x800GTO > x1800GTO > x1800XT 256mb > x1900XTX
the x800GTO is better then a 6600GT and the x1800XT 256mb is a very good value card at about ú200 and only slightly worse performance then the x1900's.
If you want SLI thats fine and dandy, but its not a great upgrade path as getting the same card 10months later isnt always availalble.

I second amd and dfi but lanpartys are only worth splashing out on if you're into overclocking.

If you purchase an ATI card be sure to upgrade the hsf unit. The stock set ups are too often junk; poor seating, falty fan, doesn't work when you need it too, etc...
A Zalman 700-CU is a great aftermarket hsf upgrade. I would also advise copper bgm heat sinks although you will likely have to cut one or two of them down to fit under the enormous copper fan from the Zalman.
It's worth it in the long run.

Actually the stock sinks for the cards under the X1800/1900 are fine... its the real powerful cards that arent cooled well enough.
Either way, i really like the ASUS X1600XT with the passive cooling. ----------------
