Okay, title comes off a little more harsh than it should. But here's my question. Smartbombs seem like a pretty nifty weapon. In fact, I love the whole concept. BUT, are they really all that effective? are there any ships that specialize in them? Or are they really just the orphaned child of some designer saying, "damn, this would look cool.."

They're an odd weapon, but they do have uses. To my knowledge there was only one guy to "specialize" in them...and he made a..er..killing.

smartbombs rock for lvl 2 missions when you get swarmed by frigates, and basically anything else where there are lots of frigates or drones, just click em on and watch the fireworks

If large smartbombs became any more powerful they might border on being overpowered in a few situations.
There is a level 4 mission where over 13 NPCs orbit in large smartbomb range and quickly die when you use one, making the mission trivial. Or if someone is attacking you with light drones a large smartbomb will take care of them. And don't forget those mining barges all gathered next to a jet can, it would be useful there too. Lastly, smartbombs are the perfect close range way to instapod someone.

It's true they have their uses, and the large ones seem pretty efficient to say the least. But, other than the occasional 'back up' they provide when you're being swarmed by drones or the like, they don't seem to have a place.
I'd love to see a smaller ship(something speedy) that has some form of bonus for the smartbombs and can hold a fair amount. It'd be the manticore of smartbombs. Big punch, but paper thin. Oh if only.

i think the question should be rephrased:
"does anything other then the largest radius smartbombs have a purpose?"
i dont know how micro smartbombs are supposed to hit anything anywyas >< and the fact that the damage taken is a constant amount, up until the edge of the area. it would make more sense that the damage decreases with range -----------------------

yeah, fair enough. It would be neat to see cruiser sized ship fly in with MWD, then orbit at 1000 meters and just unload large smartbombs.
but, that's not likely.
I'm curious to hear about the set up for this one player who became the smartbomb guru...

I did Revenge is Sweet yesterday. 10 Mercenary Rookies swarm you at like 1000 range. Medium proton smartbomb killed every single one of them in just two pulses.

yeah i was helping a friend on a lv 1 mission the other day and we got one where 20 or so frigs came in and orbited at 1k, and i used a frigate sized smartbomb on them too, but those arent exactly missions that youll be doing for very long,,,, i dont think those should count -----------------------

lol Heikki sat in a region in 0.0 awhile back (curse?) He sat at 0m from the gate on the side near where people would warp in,
He had a mega with 7 smartbombs and a cloak, When something would insta there (bear in mind it usually takes 3-5 seconds from getting there to activate the gate) He would blast it with 7 smartbombs for over 2000 damage crippling it immensly, Or killing it, second burst would kill it. Hed wracked up like 3-10bn in loot IIRC ---------------------------

Trouble is, that has been changed now so that Smartbombs cannot be activate within 5000m of a gate. Also, if I recall, he was using faction Smartbombs, which have a 9000m radius.

Also, you can't activate Smartbombs until about 16-20 seconds after decloaking, depending on skills

IMHO, smartbombs have enough niche usages to well justifiy their exitance. Though havent seen any useful suggestions for small smarties (usually ships that would bother fitting them have enough tracking to shoot the targets faster).
Major downsides: range, damage-per-cap ratio, risky usage in Empire space Upsides: no targetting delay, immune to all ECM, range effect, can hurt some targets nothing else could damage
So, there is good use on some specific missions, assuming you change your setups often. It's also somewhat common for mission runners to have one (faction) smartie for annoying frigs.
Other niche usages include: - Destroying ship deploying cyno field (untargetable due a known bug) - Killing scan probes (yes, it does make sense in occasion). Should test if they hurt warp disrupt probes. - Surprise effect in PvP (good only for faction/officer ones) - Hurting ships still in warp (when they are untargetable)
The latter being one I specialised in: sitting 15-30km in front of a gate along the warp line, and blasting ceptors/haulers which tried to insta warp on the gate. Even after practiced timing (with 9km radius) and well selected gate, miss rate was still around 30-50%. Yet, rather good specialized niche usage.

The smartbombs would probably destroy the bubble if you werent really careful.
I think they are mainly meant for drone defence. Even heavy drones fall relatively quickly to smartbombs. :) ----- If you kill all the wolves, your gonna end up with a crapload of bunnies, and by bunnies I mean stupid people Eve & Linux Woot! |

Edited by: Pottsey on 24/04/2006 09:51:24 I have a smartbomb only battleship that does missions. ItĘs great and can do some missions far faster then any turret or missile only setup.
ōEven heavy drones fall relatively quickly to smartbombs. :)ö Relatively to what? It takes over 1 minuet (7 vollys from 1 bomb) for a smart bomb to kill a domiĘs drones. Perhaps down to 52 seconds if you have max smartbomb skills and T2 bombs.

It takes ~8 cycles of a large SB to kill one of my heavy drones. Tbh, I don't think SBs aren't as useful anymore to kill player drones, not after the HP changes. Don't get me started on someone who's trained up drone durability
They still rock to kill ceptors though...

Want to try it. Are medium smartbombs enough? How many?
Would be an interesting alternative weapon setup for me because I hardly use my guns - drones 4tw.

Guess I have to NOS you before I release my drones I agree, 8 SBs are evil, just make sure you're not too close to the gate, or they won't go off

I used small smartbombs on my retribution in a 3/10 drone complex. Worked nicely. But I'd prefer if there was a good use in pvp as well.
