What good is ice mining besides making mad phat scrillah? Do you need any of the resources for building items?

why do you think people buy it?
you don't think you sell that stuff to NPC's do you?
all that stuff is used by PoS's and capital ships as far as I know.
edit: as fuel or consumables of some type...

actually I thought NPC's did buy things...but well if players are buying it then thats turbo uber!

some things NPC's do buy, but as far as I know nearly all "useful" stuff is entirely player to player market. you sell ore or ice or whatever... thats going to some other player. (who likely has skills to refine or use it better and make money as well)
in your wallet under transactions, to the right of the amount of money exchanged... the "client" which most of the time will be a character name, if its a NPC corp then of course thats an NPC buyer/seller...

ice refinables are used in a POSs fueling - roughly 86400 "racial" isotopes are needed for 8 days, with about 20k heavy water and liquid oxygen for a fully loaded large POS - thats roughly 300 blocks as i remember. some ice also yields strontium clathrates, which can be used to put your POS into hradened (invincible) mode.
the other use of ice is as fuel for capships jumpdrive, and for opening Cynosural Fields for the capships to jump to.
