Personally, I drink too much, use hardcore boosters, abuse my jump clones, kill kittens, and kick puppies. How do you handle it?

I did not grind it. Did the basic to 4 in the first weeks. Brought them to 5 some months later, just by setting them as the long skill to train while I was away, and training other things while I was online. Finally, I managed to gain enough money to buy the advanced ones, trained them to 3 fast, and to 4 when offline, just like before.
Meanwhile I played, with frigates, then the destroyer I learned to fly, and then a cruiser, and a Procurer too. I ratted, I mined, I flew away from pirates, even a fight or two.
It was funnier than buy isk and spend month playing another game just to be "nber".

Train the basics to 4 quickly, then train the rest as 50% of total skills. Does pretty quickly and you can still enjoy the game.

I interspersed my learning grind with the specific training needed to fly new ships and equip new modules as and when I felt they were necessary. The fact that the Punisher is such a joy to fly even with very limited skills helped immensely with this.
One rule of thumb that I used was to limit my non-learning skills as far as possible to those which allowed me to use new ships and modules, rather than those which improved the effectiveness of ships and modules I could already use, the notable exceptions being Electronics and Engineering, both of which I trained to level 4 very quickly, and the Gunnery secondaries, which I trained to level 2 quickly and discovered that they yielded a pretty significant benefit for a very small sacrifice in training efficiency.
Another rule of thumb was not to train any skill above Rank 3 until I had reached at least level 4 in the appropriate primary attribute learning skill; I found that trying to hold myself to not training skills above Rank 4 until I was working on the advanced learning skill for the appropriate primary attribute was just too much of a sacrifice of my ability to play and enjoy the game for the sake of efficient training for such a measure to be worthwhile.

Well... none-stop it should take 2 months to train all the learning skills up to the advanced ones lvl 4... How you handle it? Well if you can't handle 2 month without any new skill that's just sad... =P...

Go play wow for 2 months.
By the time you make 60, you'll be done with the bullschit and be able to train fun stuff.

If anyone cares, I balance the training between current desires and future possibilities.
So mostly I train specifically for a target (eg. Battlecruiser Expert) and the rest of the time for future possibilitys (eg. all * Upgrades skills to V). This means when you suddenly need a Force Recon, in 1hr, you're sitting in it and 1 day, your competent skills-wize, while giving your current ship base bonuses anyway.
For the really painful ones like Battleship V, Carrier V etc, I just use them as my lazy option. So whenever a skill is going to complete when I don't want to be online, I just set the long one.
Odd days here and there will get the long skills down to a managable level of discipline like 1-2 weeks, where you can just bite the bullet and train them straight.

Got the basics to 4, trained cruisers to 2, standard missiles to 3, heavy missiles to 1, and did lvl 2 missions while I trained adv learning skills.
lvl 2 cruiser + caracal + 30-40k sps in missiles =
I haven't tried pushing a Caracal to its limits recently, but if I flew one now, with t2 launchers, and all the support missile skills to 4 (which were 1-2 before, if that), it'd be so different.

Mostly I play Starcraft and run level 2 missions in my Caracal. I'm fully capable of running Level 3 missions for the corp I do missions for, but I'm too broke to afford a Ferox -- I honestly don't know how to make the money to buy one, let alone insure and equip it. That and, well, I either have a job or I'm looking for one :) ___________________________ |

You are a sick man....
In your sig, you should figure out how many skills are in the game (I'm sure you already know this one) and how many you have. Fill the lil skill bar based on that. 族

As a new player, I'm dealing with this now (alllllmost done!).
I got myself able to fly a cruiser, some basic combat skills, and did level 1 and 2 missions until my eyes bled.

That little skill bar would be wider than several screens combined. I did add the total though, which BTW is currently 312 (not including creation-only skills).
Hmm, well if I changed the bars so that 1 skill was one pixel, it might work... ---

Very nice, not to derail, but quickly is your long term aim to get *every* skill? I'd imagine you have the COSOMS skills but what about those Titan books? ;)
And I grinded the Learning on my alts, get it out of the way, whack in a full set of +3's and then grind the support skills. And now 8-9 months down the line they're looking high specialized, and about to take over my first character \o/ __________________ "Out on bail fresh outta jail, California dreamin" |

Not only is my goal indeed to get every skill, but I have in fact achieved that very goal twice before. They just keep adding more and more skills and making them harder and harder to get. As for the 18 billion isk needed for the Titan skills...Well that might be tough....but that won't happen for at least another 650 days. ---

I understand the value of learning skills, so put in some grinding to get them further advanced. I dont intend to rush it to much though. I doubt you become better at pvp by sitting in a station watching your skillpoints tick. Besides, my clones are still pretty cheap this way .

I'm actually doing advanced learnings of both memory and intelligence first, then train all the essential skills that are based off those two attributes quickly (electronics, engineering, mechanic), then pump up the rest for the others.
IMO, it'll make working for that Retri and Vengeance I am keeping my eyes on a lot less painful actually :D -

Your best bet is to take a staggered approach - figure out what you want to do, start for it, get basics, when you get the desired skills/profession start training in earnest.
