I have two avid gaming children. They hate chores like most kids. SO when I have things like kill this critter 100 times and give me the gold or do dishes I almost always get the gold. But I can't get either gaming child to trade toilet scrubbing for mining in this game. We are talking about the most hated chore in the house being selected over mining in this game.
That is really something else. I would like to suggest that maybe something be done to make it a little less tedious. Say when the asteroid has been depleted that it has random effects like it ends up looking like a doughnut, or the rock could look all scarred and melted as it is being mined. Or while it is being mined that there are some animation effects like chunks of gravel being blasted off the surface little pieces bouncing harmlessly off the shields, and occasionally say one in a 1000 one explodes with a huge bang and fireworks. Something has to be done to brighten mining up and get it so my kids will want to mine for me while I catch up on my TV shows and house work.

Hopefully mining comets (if they ever get to it) will be a much more interesting affair. I think that one thing they could do to spice mining up would be to make it more than just a target:activate lasers:sit there event. Give us some sort of interaction with the roids, certain things we need to do to get a proper yield etc...

Mining comets would have to have a huge danger to it hell even regular mining should have a danger of killing you from an errant rock though collisions are not part of the game it certainly would make it more fun. I'm sure all of this has been covered over the years but it would be cool to see things like being able to build a moon base, proper collisions and be able to see peeps like in E&B though not with the horrible lag that it had.

I liken mining to a fork in the eye.
I can't stand it.
Which is why I probobly never continued my beta slot into a live game slot till 3 months ago.. Then, mining was almost all you had to do.

Mining is a "time sink", something to keep you online and playing, so that you're less likely to cancel your subscription. Making it more interesting would probably be prohibitively expensive. However, I've always felt that asteroids could be made to look more like asteroids and less like balls of mud. That would make it a little more interesting.

Ouch! Kinda makes me not want to try it...
It seems like mining might be a little more interesting depending on where you choose to mine. I have been killing pirate NPC's in 0.5 and 0.4 space and I imagine they would be a whole lot more difficult to kill in a ship fitted mainly to mine. Of course in 0.4 you also have the occational player intent on causing you harm and mental anguish.

I agree with that mine in 0.0, its going to be more fun. Even better try doing it alone!

Basically I want it so that it has some measure of fun for my kids. While the game doesn't allow macros it does allow for me to make it a chore for my kids to do the mining =) but if they would rather clean toilets than mine for me it has got to be pretty bad and in serious need of some upgrade.

Pretty please, lend me your kids to clean my house and I'll mine for you.
I like mining in high sec because I can be half afk, either here on the forums, or reading, and keeping an eye to the screen just to check if there are rats nearby that need killing and to move the ore. If I wanted more action I'd mine in a 0.4, or below, system. If you just want minerals but your kids don't mine (do they yell "HAP! HAP!"?) just tell them to go ratting at the belts, or to do missions, and they have to get all what's in the floating cargos. You then recycle them and have the money from the rats/missions plus the minerals of the recycled gear. It's a win/win situation!

Personally, I find mining really relaxing. You can just chill out, listen to eve-radio, read the forums, have a beer. I'm mining kernite in 0.4 right now, and having a great time.
If you want mining to be more interesting, try going into lower and lower sec. Mine and rat at the same time, try to avoid pirates, etc. Also, if you've got 2 kids, why not have them both mine, and whoever gets more ore gets a cookie, or something. Kids love competition, in my experience.

Ninja mine in lowsec. It adds a bit of fun due to the danger and having to constantly keep one eye on local and check who's about.
I mine and manufacture in highsec and often use two accounts simultaneously on a dual screen to keep me busy. I go off to do missions and go ratting to relieve the boredom though. I do agree with someone who mentioned earlier that making it more dangerous or time consuming in highsec would wipe out mining completely due to the small amount of return. CCP would have to compensate by introducing higher yields or better ore in highsec to maintain the same amount of profit.

I don't mine because it is too boring.
Maybe they should create a mini "asteroids" type game (or ping or whatever that 2D tennis game was called), so that to keep your lasers working you have to keep hitting a target (or bouncing the "ball") or some such. This would obviously add to the calculations required, but it would be pretty basic stuff and a lot easier than combat calcs.
Just a thought. But I still wouldn't mine.

I think they should leave mining as it is. Mining is a boring occupation (in relative terms) and trying to avoid that would a) Fail b) Screw something up in the process
You can mine in low sec systems where you know there are pirates around, the only thing really more stressful than that is when they find you Mining in highsec you can either go completely AFK (in very highsec) and do something else, or you can sit and just enjoy the ambience. Or find a belt with a few other people around mining and hang out, it's quite funny to see various different class ships floating around strip mining the whole belt. Of course now my home system is devoid of Omber .
I don't find mining boring as I mine for specific purposes, because I want direct funds for a cool new ship, or to get materials to manufacture something new to see how good it sells. It's quite a motivator to know the ore your getting is going to help you do something more fun. Also I mine in a catalyst with half mining lasers and half weapons so when rats turn up I am actually able to fight them off, breaking up the monotony. And I have UT2004 running on another machine .
Also, mine into a can and have a hauler to take it back to a station, as making constant trips back and forth is head-wrecking. ---------- Go here: http://www.student.ru.nl/martindevillers/tk8_outgame.html |

Mining is something you do when you're doing something else.
Chat, watch movies, listen to radio, teamspeak, partial AFKness (esp. with ice mining), reading, posting on forums, playing another game..
I don't know anyone who just sits there and mines.

Please don't. Some of us like mining, but can't find full enough belts or quiet enough systems. Less people mining would be a good thing.

Warning: I have too much time on my hands and now you have to read for 5 minutes.
I know there is a solution to this that will benefit both sides of this discussion, the dev team just has to figure it out.
On one hand you have the people that AFK mine while veging out, watching TV, reading, listening to the radio and such.
On the other hand, you have miners like me that don't have a TV in their basement, don't have radio (and wouldn't enjoy it anyways), hate reading, and don't have 3 different monitors to switch between (to allow internet serfing while mining).
Alot of people suggested mining in low sec. Sure that spices things up a bit, but new players don't have that option really. Sure you could ninja mine with your bantam, but how many bantams are you going to go through while your civilian miners tear through the jaspet? Is it really worth it for me (who has a retriever) to go into .4 with some corp mates and risk a 6ml isk ship +6ml in strip miners when I only have 20ml in the bank? No. I guess I could go get my Osprey with the Miner II's on it, but realistically, its not like I'm gonna have a friend bring his hauler with us so I can fill him up at a rate that is about as slow as my 80yr old grandpa walks (actually he rides a cushman like the one in austin powers). So you see, there needs to be an alternative to make mining less of a ghey chore.
So. To benefit all parties, why not make an OPTIONAL 'side game' to mining? If you choose to take advantage of the 'side game' you will not be able to go afk as you would somehow be determining the yield you goyt. If you decided to play this game and were good at it you could make say up to 30% more than an AFK miner. You could also decide not to play the game and take the default yield taking your skills and everything into account as normal.
Now, the difficult part is coming up with a game that actually has something to do with mining. I don't know, like finding seams in the asteroid like... memory or something. Say if you were mining a standard Pyroxeres roid you would have a GUI come up. You would then begin flipping cards over. Flip over the card and find Viscous Pyroxeres find its match and your next cycle yields VP. You could make a serious of small games so that people could choose. Now that I think about it its kinda lame, but you could make something like that fun. perhaps a ship from ages back collided with a roid and was embedded in the roid. You are now the proud owner of a fossilized 1950's caracal. ;)
Just throwing about ideas, but I would love to see a series of side games added to mining, just to make it a little more involved and a little less boring.
Or, I could just hire a monkey. I will just mine my own business ore you can test me. SOB - Mining Division Head

This is the reason i don't understand all of the complaints against macrominers. They do what most players think is too boring: mine in high security space. They keep low end mineral prices low so players can keep on NPC hunting or whatever to make money.

Well they do what most miners do (which is boring) and use a program to do it.
In otherwords, the real miners hate macros because they can mine without even having to be around. ALL DAY LONG. Perhaps its jealousy, but it IS against EULA. Also, if they weren't around, mining would be much more profitable.
You can't really mine AFK because roids do get popped (especially if you are mining Kernite or Pyroxes) and in a retriever (like I have) every 3 minutes you have to unload your cargo into the can. Any other ship and you're looking at every minute (unless your hold can carry more than your miners extract).

Bored mining? Gang up and form a team.
Solo mining is boring (unless you jet-can, then the ore theives will entertain).
So form a group - some mine while some haul. Split the proceeds (never refine and sell if your refining is <4, just sell the ore).
A small group can make everyone 500 k to 1.5 mil ISK an hour. That way you get the ISK and cut down on mining time.
