Sadly, WoD is here to laugh at for a long time! New player experience, more highsec PvE missions, casual play, balance, counters to AFK cloaking, expanding the NEX store, and Power Projection.

While I like the idea behind Valkyrie, I'm not sure, as of yet, that it is a good business decision. They're basically betting the future on a new piece of tech that isn't really proven to have staying power, and if a better version of the Rift comes out from a competitor, they basically shot themselves in the foot. It's early enough in the tech's lifecycle that I could see this easily happening at this point. It just seems premature, when CCP can't really afford to bet the house on yet another project that's a failure. |

my only issue with this is, as I said above, the loss is from 2013. So whatever was killed has been killed already. It could be WoD related, which would be why they had the layoffs in dec, as that part of the WoD project was beign scrapped. But then they hired new people and have a spot open now. So honestly, if WoD was going to be canned, it would not really relate to the 21m loss, as that would relate to this year, not last. |

Incarna is the most likely.
Bear in mind, depreciating the value on the balance sheet doesn't mean 'We've thrown this away'. It means 'We don't think it's worth X amount any more'
With no significant implementation for the last 3 years or so, that kind of fits Incarna's code, no?

I don't think that they are spending anywhere near what they spent on WOD or Dust on Valk. Isn't it basically being made by a small team in Newcastle?

Just release Hilmars $1000 Japanese Pants. Charge $1000 worth of aurum and let the current monocle users decide if they want to be known as too poor to buy 'The Pants'. As their egos carry them towards their credit cards, Incarna suddenly makes a fortune :-p

Sounds reasonable, but man 21m dollars, did they really value it THAT high? I mean, they were right on top of it and KNEW it was utter crap. I mean, last time I entered the CQ (long time ago) I still couldn't believe the sorry state it was in.... Then again, it wouldn't be the first time ppl got so delusional about their product that they couldn't see it was just a pile of excrement...

People saying this really pisses me off. When Valkyrie was first put on display everyone that I saw had very high praise for it and begged CCP to make an actual game of it. CCP is doing so and more often I'm seeing people complain that they're spending the time to develop the game they wanted to have made. It's disgusting. I doubt most people realized it was going to be a Rift exclusive when they were praising it. Back then, most people probably didn't even know what a Rift was. |

Based on what I have gleamed working for one of those Fortune 500 companies, perhaps that loss is not really a loss in how we common folks interpret it. Since I did not look at their financial sheet, I will make up numbers to state what might have happened.
Beginning of 2013, the CEO states that if the plans follow through for the year, the company will generate 50 million in profits. At the end of 2013, after expenses, failures, and other write-offs are deducted, the overall profits are only 29 million. Thus from the proposed 50 million minus the 29 million in true profits, a "loss" of 21 million is noted. Thus for 2014, and potentially future plans, that 21 million "loss" would have to be reconfigured into the spreadsheets and plans adjusted accordingly.
Again, I could be wrong, but doubtful CCP is 21 million in the hole right now. |

K, obviously I struck a nerve.
I'll elaborate - A game being made as a spin-off from a game that already caters to a niche audience. This game requires specific hardware that I'd venture to guess 2-5% of PC gamers actually own, and that number won't grow too much. That's great, if the 50 people that own an Occulus Rift have a blast with Valkyrie, good for them. You can be blind fanboys and say this is going to be groundbreaking. Newsflash : It won't be. The glaring majority of video gamers will never even know what Valkyrie is by the time it eventually floats down the shitter.
From a business perspective - Good luck, CCP. You are investing in a shiny toy that is in absolutely no way accessible to the average gamer.
From a die-hard Gamers' perspective, sure, it looks great. Will I lay down whatever the cost is for an OR to play it? Hell no.
The problem is, there won't be enough hardcore gamers to give them an ROI.
Waste of resources, I will say again, because they should be working on keeping the existing base happy, not expanding to territories that are destined for failure.
But yeah, wow Valkyrie OMG SO COOL bla bla bla

What I'm saying is that I am throwing random percentages out of my ass.
But the point I am trying to make is that they are targeting a niche audience out of a niche audience, and asking that niche of the niche to lay down 500$ in hardware to play it.
Once some of you start spending your own money instead of your parents, like the rest of us do, you'll realize that spending 500$ on computer games, when it could go to your kids, house, retirement, etc, is a ridiculous proposition.
If the game would target a broader market, it would be a better investment for CCP. That is all I'm saying.

They knew exactly what it was and exactly what it was being designed for. Some people buy golf clubs or new cars with their extra money, some people buy computers and video games. Rift doesn't cost more than a lot of tablets nowdays. So claiming that only people living off their parents will buy them is disingenuous.
Also, your insult followed by "All I'm saying is this other thing, so don't insult me back" is childish. |

Absolutely agree.
But when I bought my golf clubs, I could GO OUT AND PLAY GOLF. I didn't have to buy a specific club to only play one hole. If I would be forced to do that, I wouldn't play golf.
You cannot compare the two.
Think of your golf set as your computer, and the occulus rift like a pair of laser glasses that let you get hole in one's on every par 3.
You don't need the damn glasses, and most people will never bother, but a few hardcore golfers will buy them for sure. Will there be enough hardcore golfers to make those glasses profitable for the company that made them? Maybe, maybe not.
And to bring this even further - What if a certain course required you to use those glasses, and all the other golf courses in the vicinity did not?
Which course do you think would have more customers? |

You realise that you don't actually need the OR to play the game? Its also like you don't need a gamepad to play GTA's PC ports: It makes the game easier to use, but isn't an absolute requirement. Plus Valkyrie is stated to have joystick support from the get go - I asked the Valkyrie devs this in person at the CCP meet in London.
I also saw people who had never heard or played of EVE before having a go and actually enjoying it, especially from that Valkyrie is slated (subject to change I must vehemently add) to be one of the 10 launch titles of the Oculus Rift.
People will play Valkyrie - it has numerous markets tagged already, rather than just the Nerds that play EVE Online. Blessed are those that carry the Empress' Light; with it they destroy the shadows |

Even if your (incorrect) position is that the Valkyrie audience is far too niche, how can it possibly be worse than WoD whose target audience is angsty pre-teen girls whose attention has almost certainly switched to a new fad by now. |
