I'm sure this is a very simple question, but I was wondering how best to outfit my retiever. I know there probably aren't many options but this is my first mining barge so I was curious as to what others do. Naturally strip miners in the hi's, and I assume an afterburner in the mid, but what about the 2 low's? Also ideas as far as what kinda drones would be appreciated. I guess i should also mention that I don't plan on going under .5 for awhile yet, so I guess I just need to worry about belt rats. Any suggestions would be most appreciated, thanks!

In my case, I've got strips in the high, nothing in the mid, and a CPU and mining upgrade in the lows.
There ain't a lot of room to play around with on them things. I'm hoping having Electronics V in another day or two will allow me to fit a survey scanner, but that's it.
If you don't go for the mining upgrade, you should have more room to play with, but I don't see an AB as something to put above ore output.
For drones, pack as many as you can fit. Five smalls if you can. Otherwise use mediums to fill your drone bay.
The Retriever can "tank" (I use the term loosely) anything in secure space long enough for your drones to kill it. At least most of the time.
Make sure you use drones that are specific to the predominate rat. In Caldari space, that's a kinetic drone. You'll have to figure it out for the others.
Oh, and don't launch the drones until you have all the bad guys locked on you. Much easier to keep all your drone cover that way. If you just let them orbit waiting for rats, they tend to get targetted first, leaving you without cover for the next spawn.

The Retriever isn't a combat ship.
Fit strip miners in the highs, whatever in the med slot, and two nanos or two stabs in the lows.
At the first sight of danger, flee to saftey.

Thanks for the info both of you! Karl your post was very helpful, though until I train up drones a bit more I think I'll be utilizing Berrik's idea on combat, hate to lose a nice shiny ship:)

With very little droneskills and armorskills I take out two Blood revenants and two frigs at the same time with two retrievers!
Hi: stripminers
Med: nothing
Low: Small "Accommodation" Vestment Recontsructer 1
200 mm Reinforced Rolled Tungsten Plates
I use Rat spesific drones...
As I can only use 4 at a time I use 3 acolyte and 1 Infiltrator...
I get over 1000 armor, a good rep and Insane damage from those drones...
Blood raiders do EM and thermal and the retriever has 70% EM res...
For all the ppl who say a barge is cardboard, go play in the traffic! I`ve even taken down 3 cruisers at the same time wiht it...
Clue is to get the cruisers to lock the drones and the frigs / destroyers to lock you...
As long as there is only 1 cruiser locked on each barge, you are good to go!
Practise a little in 04 and 03 should be no prob exept for PC Pirates!

BTW - I cannot fit stabbers... they use 30CPU and I`m faaaar from it!

Here is a real barge setup:
Hi: 2x strips
Med: roid scanner or cap recharger
Low: Small rep II and cpr or mining upgrade
dont forget the drones

I have engin 5, elect 5 and some afterburner related skills...
I cant fit an AB + strips + tank in the lows.
I tend to go with Strips + survey scanner + one overdrive (turn it off when your in position) and one armour rep.
Oh... and a crud load of medium drones :)
