I've been playing with different Megathron setups and I'm thinking that a Megathron sniping setup may be the best solo gate camping setup.
Thoughts on this? Pros/cons?
Obviously this setup would give up a tank. How far do you have to be away from sentries so that you don't get pwned? ------------------------------------ Shadrin Imago Mundi

You won't be able to tank sentries on your own, so get a sniping setup.
You'll have to be 151km from the stargate to avoid sentry fire. I'd recommend a similar setup to below:
Highs - 7x 425mm railguns Meds - 3x Sensor Booster, 1x Tracking Computer Lows - 3x Tracking Enhancer, 3x Magnetic Field Stabilizers, 1x whatever (WCS, Medium Armor Rep perhaps)
I'm not in-game atm to check but I think that's a pretty decent sniping setup.

I prefer the in your face, I used a ferox with **** SP and was able to pop haulers/afk cruisers/BC's without issue, longer if you can get in nos range, but chances are you won't be able to have a scram
Other than that a mega is good stuff for camping gates at 150km+ you should have no problems instapopping t1 haulers.

Sniping. Nothing worse than finding someone using a dura-whatever and just scrambling you at the gate.
But even still, I've never found gate camping to be fun, eventful, or skill intensive. --------------

In your face is best. I prefer having all or nothing fights that give the other guy chance to fight back, oh and no stabs, dont fly it if you cant afford to loose it.
Never been fond of sniping, not much of a challenge.

I agree. Belt pirating is much more fun and harder. Gatecamping is just pointless ganking, no challenge or fun to it. BTW Malka, did you get my EVE-Mail? -------------------------------- Joria Klex > it's sad really cuz i know for a fact i would utterly destroy u all in RL combat |

Each to their own.. I find belt hunting dull and pointless.. wandering around looking for soft mining targets but often not finding anyone at all.

I'll trade you your soft mining belt targets for my commonly t2 fitted antipirates guarding the mining ops or complex gates. And don't go belt to belt, use your scanner. Much faster. --------------

A slight correction: You must be 150km from any sentry gun, not the gate. (this may be more or less than 150km from the gate). --- Our greatest glory is not in never failing, but in rising up every time we fail. - Emerson |

It's from the gate. It -has- to be. Because I've found myself 60-70k away from the guns and 150+k away from the gate without taking sentry fire. --------------

Snipng is very boring IMO; for the people you kill, for you and for the people trying to kill you.
Do the game a favour and find a friend or two and sentry tank.

Ok first off its 150km from the object the guns are guarding e.g gate or station, you can be 30km from the guns aslong as its 150km from said object.
Sniping - useful for killing haulers/frigs/cruisers but not alot else. Vey boring and unless you have scouts out its only a matter of time before someone gets a covert ontop of you.
Tanking - Can be fun and as wizard said its nice to do the all or nothing fights. You can take on most things at a gate although a well setup bs with decent pilot will be pretty impossible unless you have some form of EW etc. Tanking works best in groups of 3+
Belt roaming - Probably the most fun but least rewarding, you rarely find anyone in them in anything worth ransoming, and the only people in 0.4 belts are usually people who dont know any better and couldnt fight their way out of a wet paper bag.
p.s dont fit stabs

I've been fortunate enough to kill a sacriledge and a new guy in a scorp while sniping. However, unless you can get a group of 3 people its not feasible to kill anything less than an idiot in a bs.
Sentry tanking is more fun, more risky and ultimately more rewarding. Taking down another bs infront of the sentries is something of an accomplishment.

And the fun in popping haulers and NPC set up cruisers and BC is? not much different am afraid, most pvp nowadays is ganks, since you cant actually trust anybody to take on 1-v-1 honourably

Pros You will inflate your ego, and you will be pleased you can kill people from a long way away with teeny weeny risk for you. (dont forget your stabs) Cons People will take you for the low life bottom feeding sea slug you are.

And you dont know about how easy it is to be destroyed by snipers???
And you were doing courier missions?

Edited by: burek on 01/05/2006 01:29:28 Nothing wrong with a bit of sniping, if you do it for profit. Once you start believing that it makes you some leet pvper, that becomes a bit sad.
Plus instapopping careless older players gives you that special buzz when they start cursing and threatening but you both know it's in vain.

Let me tell you, from experience....
THE BEST 0.0 SOLO GATE CAMPER I HAVE EVER ENCOUNTERED IS "HEIKKI" OF ASUYA.
I consider my tanks to be respectable. Let me tell you, this guy ATE my decked out Brutix faster than I could initiate a third volley. He usually sits in his bubble and uses T2 Large Blasters and T2 Heavy Drones in a Megathron; sometimes, he uses smart bombs. He's been reported to knock Interceptors out of the sky with that thing; Tracking Computers, Tracking Enhancers and Magnetic Stabalizers I suspect... that and LVL 5 across the board in Gunnery; not to mention, he's always with an ALT so I suspect his ALT has insane Gang Warefare skills to further boost potential damage output.
I don't know if it's funny or sad, how much damage his Megathron can inflict on any ship.
Typically, what happens is you jump into 9KOE... 'oh ****, 7 or so hostiles camping the gate!!! oh n03z!!'. Without thinking, you try to warp to the other gate... oh, but Heikki is there at the other gate, all by his self. After you wake up 40 jumps or so away, give or take, you realize you would have had a better chance facing the 7 or so hostiles than to get caught in Heikki's bubble.
