Hey,
Is it possible to be a successful miner with just one account? I'm very close to getting my first barge (the medium T1 one, can't remember the name atm) and although I have very accomplished corp mates for protection, I typically mine on my own (although only in Empire). Will I be able to mine in 0.0 on my own in a barge, or will I always need protection? Are combat drones enough to keep me safe? Do I need that additional account to provide that hauler / BS protection? We have a number of pos's and one in 0.0 which I will stay close to for protection, but is that enough?

Depends on your skills, but I wouldn't mine in 0.0 solo. I don't see how a barge can tank the rats that spawn there. Once you get into a skiff or a hulk, maybe. Stick to high end lowsec if you need that good ore.
Get a friend for 0.0.

Does anyone who mines as their main profession use only one account or multiple ones?

i use only one account to mine, i use a covetor. If u want to mine in 0.0, lonely its a little bit suicidal but some player do it with sucess. (with bookmark, insta, safe spot etc.)
Get a retriver, fit with strip miner 1, dont buy huge implant, mine with bookmark and watch local and u will be fine. And if u die anyway, with hope u will already have mined the value of this ship and probably more.
In a barge in 0.0 npc pirate can kill you, with a barge tech 2 maybe not, but do u want to risk a barge that cost around 400 million for the hulk, 60 skiff and around 140 million in low sec ? and player pirates..that will be more than happy to pop you ?
In group you will make more money, have protection and maybe haulers. A corp that protect a system, their home while u mine for them, but those corp are hard to find.
Anyway nothing is 100 % safe in eve, and get retriver, the first barge doesnt really worth it.

I'm almost skilled enough to use the Retriever like I said, but how bad is the smallest barge? Everyone I've ever spoken to has advised me to stay away from it. Could I outmine it in an Osprey? I plan on going ahead and getting the Retriever, but I'm just curious.

You can badly outmine the small barge with an Osprey. See, the barges go like this.
Small Barge > all frigs Medium Barge > all cruisers Large Barge > all BS _____________________________

Wow, I didn't know that. So I could potentially do better than a retriever in a bs despite the mining bonuses the barges give? (I'm not going to find out because after the Retriever comes the Covetor...)

Define successful. Yes you can mine with just one account, but no you're not going to be as effective as one who runs two accounts or has friends helping. In all aspects of live group efforts always trump the efforts of the individual.
For the individual, mining solo in 0.0 space really isn't any better than mining in 0.5 or above space at the end of the day due to simple logistics as well as potential disruptions. If you're in an alliance then the disruptions will be fewer, but you still have the logistics barrier to climb over.

for the past 2 years i've only been mining with one account (but i've now got a 2nd account).
Basically, a large barge 'can' mine in 0.0, its just really tricky. The trick is to warp out whenever any npc's show up in your belt. You can make more money than a battleship mining this way, although its much more risky.

Can I make just as much money in empire as in 0.0?

1.Is your corp in 0.0? 2.Who will haul , and to where? 3.you will probably make more isk in empire if you wish to solo and are not in an 0.0 corp. 0.0 logistics for a non 0.0 player are nutz.
