Sorry if this is an obvious question, I have bene playing for about 1 week and dig some research but have not found an all out clear answer.
I am just basically wondering what the best ship for this would be. Is it better to go with a Destroyer/Cruiser type or a bigger ship and if so what are some typical ships and loadouts. I am thinking smaller and cheaper ship for now as I am inexperienced and know I will die.
I am also thinking of designing the ship to mine and take hits without fighting back, but not sure if this is wise or not.
Any help would be great or point me to an article that is probably staring me in the face :)
Thanks.

Viable? Maybe. Economically sound? Depends very much on if you can find a deserted system in low-sec. Solo mining in no-sec would be exceedingly tough to do and make money on.
Stay cheap; mining frigate and instas set to the local station will be your best bets. _______________________________________________ The Dead Parrot Shoppe is always looking for players, new and old, who value intelligence, humor, and fun over ego, kills, and skills. Contact me. :) |

Good point there, I did not think about economically viable, I guess things would be pretty crowded out there.
I was first thinking just about the ability to stay alive mining on your own.
Thanks for any input so far.

I run a mining and production outfit in lowsec and 0.0. Doing it alone definitely won't be as profitable as skilling for a barge and mining kern/omber in highsec but if you want excitement ninja mining is the way to go. Get an Exequror, find a dead end system with a low number of belts and 1 or two stations. Fit as many cargo xpanders as you can fit and then fit your lasers around them (don't waste cargo on copros for more lasers) then follow the various ninja mining guides around here.
If you really want to get into lowsec mining and don't want to have to ninja it, I'd highly reccomend getting into a low sec mining corp with alliance membership prefered for safe 0.0 access. -----------------------

An Osprey with 3 x ML2s and a rocket launcher plus four drones has handled the NPC rats in my local 0.4 system. However, it can NOT handle PvP. Run. Fit out a hauler with a tractor beam, bookmark in to within 15km, tractor the ore in and warp out. Fast.

Hi mate, mining in a groups is always move fun and alot more profitable. And the combined security also helps against pirates and rats.

If you want to do 0.0, Apoc or Dominix, in an NPC 0.0 region like Stain or Curse (where you have tons of dockable stations, things you don't find in most 0.0 regions) ---- EVE-Central.com | Obsidian Technologies - 0.0 Manufacturing, Defense and Logistics. We're hiring! Mail me |

it can be done and it can be done really cheaply too. may take a bit longer, but it can be done.
currently running ninja mining in .0 space. I have had to pay to mine there, but it was pittance compared to what I made for the hour mining.
know who is in local, know what type of npc's you are likely to find and have a fighter ship of some type with you in a station and you can acutally go out in a mining frigate and just mine. when an npc warps in, if its something you can handle, take it out and continue mining. fill up that can and grab your hauler to bring back the goods.
best way...definitely not. one of the least expensive ways? yeah. the mining frig I have is set with mining drones and lasers and an MWD. that's it. the hauler - just the mwd. T1 ones at that and basic ones - so not too much. the fighting frig can pretty much take out every npc I come across with maybe one or two exceptions. but if it gets blown, it didn't cost me a bundle that insurance couldn't cover.
and if you do get accosted by a player, jsut pay the ransom. if they pop you while mining in your lowly frigate its not like they are going to get much out of the deal. so far I've paid to mine about 4 different times. and its really not that bad. and I've got protection from pierats who are not in the corp whose system I'm in.
but you can find lots of low sec areas where there is little to no action.

mining in 0.0 can be...risky if you go to alliance space...they will blow you up if you go to a pirate infested area...they will blow you up what I think works best is finding a little, off the grid system which is relatively safe ...however...rats in 0.0 can be a pain if your not set-up right but the possible profits are immense
