I've been reading through the forums and looking in the item database but I can't seem to make sense of the yield info for Modulated Deep Core Mining laser 2's.
Can these, efficiently, be used on any asteroid type (with the proper crystals) or only Mercoxit.
The item description suggests a yield of 120 units with a bonus of 120 when the crystal is used. However, the description of the crytal itself suggests a bonus of 1.625%.
I'd be really grateful if someone could explain how this works.
Basically, I'm planning on training towards a viable 0.0 BS mining setup and I want to work out whether I should ultimately be fitting Miner 2s or MDCM2s with the appropriate crystals (may be mining a variety of Ore types).
Thanks in advance.

Not sure if this is of any use to you. Atleast it's the most complete mining info I have found to date. There's is a lot of info on barges and ore output in there.

I've just recently learned how to use the MDCM II's and have 7 fitted on my Armageddon. I'm getting approximately 300 m3 for every 3 minutes. I'm not exactly sure how this is calculated, but I think it might go something like this:
120 x 1.625 = 195 195 x 5% = 9.75 9.75 x 10 = 97.5 (5% better mining yield for each level of Mining & Astrogeology) Total = 195 + 97.5 = 292.5
A Miner II with equal skils would get 270 m3 every 3 minutes ((60*0.05*10)+60).
The MDCM II can be used on any asteroid, with the appropriate mining crystal employed. I've been using these things for about a week now, and haven't broken a crystal.
There are 2 problems using the MDCM II for mining battleships or cruisers: the mining crystals are huge and take up a lot of cargo room, the 3 minute cycle means that you MUST delay-cycle each miner so they mine at different intervals. The second problem is the big one. All the time spent on engaging the miners one at a time instead of all at once, and the 'loss' of mining time when the 'roid pops can add up and may not make the MDCM II better than the Miner II, since the difference is only 30m3 per miner per 3 minute interval.

Would it not be wiser, then, to target multiple asteroids at once, to avoid wasting time? _______________________________________________ The Dead Parrot Shoppe is always looking for players, new and old, who value intelligence, humor, and fun over ego, kills, and skills. Contact me. :) |

To Dalen: the article in question is in the Stations channel in the forums, stickied so it's easy to find.
Linkage
To Friedrick: yes, targetting mutiple 'roids is a smart thing, I was really talking about the time taken to space out the cycle times of the MDCM II's so that they don't turn off and jettison ore to space when I run out of cargo room by accident.
