Yes...I was watching the discovery channel...and then I was thinking about Farscape...
Space Whaling...
Make up a creature and put it in space so that players can completely destroy them and harvest their corpses for production purposes!

I don't think it's a bad idea, but it's kind of funny.

Think about it...
If they ever allow the player-based creation of genetic equipment (enhancers, weird gizmo's, odd trinkets, etc) maybe there can be some kind of creature(s) that show up every once in a while in certain area's that people could go kill and harvest.
In order to avoid people just getting something like an exhumer - make the creatures either fight back, or move very fast. This would require a "speedy vehicle" in order to capture (maybe you have to capture them?) or kill them with a special weapon that doesn't ruin the product in the process?
This idea would need some thought in terms of the animal - capture process - harvest process - what is even harvested - and why do we need to harvest this mineral/resource.

It would need to be a large semi-sentient creature that warps around a handful of systems (so relatively rare, the way ice is rare), feeding on space dust or whatever. Maybe a flock of medium-sized creatures. You'll need scan probes to find it.
It could be (with a low %age chance) attracted to ships in space - omg roving safespot buster!
It warps every 300 seconds, +- a random amount.
It rams anyone trying to harvest it, for kinetic damage.
You catch it with a harpoon module! (high slot)
It yields ... I don't know. How can this fit into the economic system and be anything other than a Silly? :)

Make the space whale swallow ships and warp them 30 systems away. |

Yes indeed. The only thing I can't figure out is the whole point of harvesting these creatures. What the heck do they give you (and how does this material fit into the system EVE has)?
But yes - a hunt is what I'm thinking about. You'd actually have to hunt these things. ---

I was thinking a little more about space whales...
Let me explain how there are even space whales in the first place. Like I said in the very first post, I was thinking about Farscape at the time. Anyone familiar with this show knows that the "Leviathan" is a living spaceship that roams around and crap, along with any other sci-fi show that has living creatures in space. Anyways...
Space whales are simple to explain. Where would they be though? They could be restricted to belts...or gas planets...or actually they could be allowed to respawn *anywhere* at completely random times.
I would suggest restricting space whales to low security. 0.4 and lower. 0.0 obviously having "bigger" space whales or higher quality space whales (maybe even "schools" of space whales instead of individual ones?).
Space whales - What they offer? Space whales could offer a list of things, or maybe only one thing. Since salvage skills are being introduced in Kali (I think) we could do two things. Either kill the space whales and they leave a "corpse" to "salvage" in space, or we could capture the space whale and haul it back to the station in the cargo hold (only space whaling ships can hold a captured space whale) so that it can be reprocessed (tosss it into a grinder and watch it scream). Anyways - You could simply sell the harvest to an NPC corp for isk (like bounties work) or you could get minerals which can be put into the construction of certain equipment. The only thing that comes to mind is the combat boosters (which require gasses right?).
And if you captured a space whale we could always start measuring E appendages with "Whaling Boards" (similar to kill-boards) where people just amass a massive amount of whales and call themselves kings of the...space-like ocean. ---
