I found an easy way to reduce time after kill missions to pick up NPC loot and you don't even have to have a tractor beam. It makes it easier of you have drones to help you kill off the nasties.
Once you've killed the first one, select the can they drop and orbit the can with AB at whatever is your default distance (I use 10K). Because the rest keep on following you around the can, it minimises the distance the loot is spread out over. Even if they fire missiles at you, the afterburners keeps your speed up so it reduces the damage they do. A passive shield tank with a booster for emergency use only should have no problem with most lvl2 missions doing this.
Quite often I can stop at once can and empty three or four at a time without moving.

Nice, never thought of doing it like that. I usually just sat in one spot tanking the damage and avoided running (err flying) all over the place.

My range 100km.....
I now have 1 can in the middle and the rest of the junk in a ring around it, 200km across. And this will safe time how? :P
I rather move away in one direction (towards a warpable object just in case I need to run). Picking up the loot is just flying back in more or less the same direction as all cans should be more or less lined up.

OK show off, I didn't say it would work for everyone
My max range is only 15K but my cruiser is too slow to stay more than 10K from them. By orbiting the can at 10K, I get most of my kills in the same place. While I go around, they have to slow down to turn so the center is where most of my kills are.
