Ship is an Apoc. The rest of the setup is T2 but the guns would be T1 Mega Beam or Tachs.
Is the damage worth while or shall I just worry about sniping when I have the T2 guns/ammo?

Everybody will say no solely on the fact that using T1 guns isn't "OPTIMAL".
Try it out yourself though, get a friend, find a gate, and snipe and see if you like it or not.
If you have no friends... well I can't help you there

I insta-popped two hostile Stealth Bombers useing an all T1 ArtyTempest. But yeah, T2 is where it's at. :)

invest in a set of good named guns (the best named do almost the same damage as t2, but no t2 ammo), and then sell them when you can use t2 large

Its possible, but they are very gimped by comparison with the introduction of T2 ammo, which does (for lasers) 32 base damage instead of 20--60% more--and has far higher optimal also.
You can do it, sure, but T2 will be much better.
