Newer / Noob Corp. Building our first orca. Question on how MTU works (as I haven't used one) Could we use that to replace tractor beam? Thus Freeing up a high slot for another Mining Link? Or would the MTU only tractor the OWNERS cans/wrecks- can you control it like a tractor beam or is it automatic. thanks for any input! |

The MTU will tractor any friendly or neutral cans. So this will work for a mining fleet. The problem is it will tractor them as soon as they are dropped so unless the miner is within 2500m of the MTU they will not be able to fill their jetcans. |

I assume Hulks are being used.
MTU works well with a freighter, |

that's the idea- have the orca sit next to the MTU and just move from MTU to orca- hence freeing up one more high slot instead of tractor beam. only thing being that the MTU will be kind of the 'middle man' to get the ore to orca. make sense? |

Unless you are planning on also using the Orca for bonuses, then just use a freighter with the MTU, way, way more space (also more hp). |

no, right now our orca will be the hauler/bonus ship- no other big ships on the manufacturing line yet. Just trying to decide if that extra gang link is worth the hassle of the MTU or just put a tractor beam there. I thought someone would have an Idea of how THEY do it. thanks all |

Small Tractor Beam II's max range is 84km and max tractor velocity is 1.2km/s. Moble Tractor Unit's max range is 125km and max tractor velocity is 1km/s.
The Harvester Capacitor Efficiency link is virtually worthless. Using a tanking link, shield or armor, is pretty futile - most likely won't prevent a gank of an Exhumer/Mining Barge. Using a Sensor Booster link is unnecessary, because why boost scan range of Hulks when maxed out Modulated Strip Miner II range is 26km.
MTU will start pulling cans almost immediately, but this is workable (see Tau's advice).
The decision is yours.
I would use an MTU, put an Expanded Probe Launcher II in the spare high and scan down stuff for people who get bored with mining ;)
Also, don't use the Orca as a booster/hauler. Get a Miasmos, you can get a 63000m-¦ ore bay from it. |

ok ok ok WTF don't use an orca for mining bonuses? please explain. that's what we are building the flipping thing in the first place!? skilled up and maxed on the mining link bonuses and if we have 2 x mining laser optimization and 1 x mining laser field enhancement. That would be a SICK cycle time - ships be poopin out jet cans so fast! What am I missing? |

Simple misunderstanding, calm down :)
I said "Don't use the Orca as a booster/hauler", I should have said "Use the Orca only as a booster, not as a hauler".
Edit: Mining Foreman Links have a "modulelimit -1" parameter; meaning you can only fit one of each to a single ship. |

I tend to use: * Mining Foreman Link - Laser Optimization II * Mining Foreman Link - Mining Laser Field Enhancement II * Siege Warfare - Shield Harmonizing II * Mobile Tractor Unit
Having one miner with the Siege Warfare Mindlink for 5% more shield (plus 10% with just the skill) doesn't hurt either. |

Only takes a few of Tier 3 suicide Battlecruisers to down a poorly (cargo) fitted Orca. |

Our orca, as with all our ships, has a DC II on it, I think it a must for all ships. The goons have taught us once to not fit max cargo ships in lieu of panzerindustrials. It doesn't matter if you are in 1.0 space, always prepare for the worst and it won't happen. |

I wasn't aware two of the same mining links could be fitted to one Orca. Nevertheless as far as links, MTU, and tractor beams go the best fit providing you have the skill requirements is the one Tau linked above.
The extra EHP provided by the T2 Shield Harmonizing link is more important for the safety of the mining ships in your fleet than the Orca. If you have fitted the Orca out properly then you should have no problems. It is invariably Orca hauling expensive cargo or ships as opposed to Orca providing mining support that get ganked.
Be advised that the use of MTU by miners to collect jetcans has been noted as a weakness that could be exploited. Best policy is to have the mining ships within 2500 metres of the Orca to enable the mining ships to empty ore directly into the fleet hanger. With the mining links at perfect skills you get over 25 kilometre range. This should be plenty enough range for your miners. |

Yeah... no. I see Mining Orcas get ganked (or at least attempted) all the time. Not for profit. For lulz. Why shoot a Retriever when you can harvest juicier tears by popping the Orca? And it's the ones with the Shield links and DCUs that survive those attacks.
Ekaterina 'Ghetto' Thurn wrote:Be advised that the use of MTU by miners to collect jetcans has been noted as a weakness that could be exploited. And the reason I often see those Orcas getting attacked is cuz I'm usually messing with the mining groups who are using an MTU. The gank groups target them cuz they tend to be Cargo Exp fitted, and I target them cuz it's fun to bump the Orca and then pop the MTU. (ie. MTUs are generally a bad idea)

The last high slot is for: Remote shield repping!
You can use a energy transfer if you have a Logi ship that you want to feed cap to instead.
Based entirely on fleet size and ship types.
Low slots on orca: Damage control and Bulkheads.
Ore ships are hull tankers first and shield tankers 2nd.
You will see this aspect with the Rorqual most of all.
Use your rigs for cargo! You will want to be able to haul 50k m3. (( Move packaged battleships )) |
