This is not possible, but if you can borrow a PC with a highspeed connection and playable hardware, you can always set a 7-21 day skill. Most of the ppl I know who have RE5, DI5, etc. did it in circumstances like yours :)

No highspeed connection required. Especially not when you're just logging in to set a skill. EVE's internet traffic is somewhere inbetween 1.5kbs - 5kbs. Mostly 3kb per second or less. Even a 33k6 will do. Or ask a good, trustworthy friend to set skills for you.

The problem with 56k is, it took you 10 seconds at the most to load when you hit Post Reply, it takes me on 1mb BB about half a second.

Well... I don`t agree completely... Putting a cap on max bytes/sec has made situations in PVP battles become extremely laggy (especially when loading up-hence the containers/drones exploit). Other than that I see almost no reason to have a fast connection for this game-unless you have high ping times. 3kb/sec? heh... you could play this game with a 14400 modem if you had low ping times.

They didn't actually put in a 'cap' as you call it on data transfer rates. Lag and data transfer are usually completely unrelated... you can have a small packet and it could take ages to get back because of the route your ISP sends it on, or you could have a 16k transfer happen in a few seconds, because it only stops at a couple of servers on route.
If you read the DevBlog, you'll find a really interesting article about the net setup for tranquility, and in it is a comment about how they had budgeted for around 16kB a second... as has been mentioned, the fact that it averages 3kB a sec is testament to the great amount of planning and good coding that has gone into this game. It's a shame but most people complain about gameplay issues that have no bearing on the quality of the code and this tends to give people the impression that somehow the devs are not good coders. This isn't the case, it's just not easy planning a game like this.

Edited by: Skelator on 24/09/2003 04:42:49 Actually.. this is a great idea. Since you cannot see any info (character info) via this website without having a account anyways why not at least allow the players to select skill training? We are paying for the game and alot of us work tons of overtime and Dont have the luxury of playing 24/7 like some of the folks here. It would be awesome if I could log into the player site and start another skill training from work.
GM's any comments on this?

Edited by: SpawnMaster on 01/10/2003 05:42:40 Totally agree. After all we do pay for this game. Having a web interface to enable skill training really would not be that hard. They are over half way there with the character info screen. Come on guys.... Sort this one out ------------------------------------------------ The sky is not the limit. Totally agree. Would be nice to have a web interface to start Skill training. I can even see a few more functionalities. Why not see the market of the region your char is in, if your character is docked to a station and do your trading by the web interface. Or have a corp managment interface.

Logging into the game over the net just to set your skill training would be great!
This would make it easy to change your skill training at work, where most of us don't have the game set up on our work computers!
If we can check our skills outside the game, why not give us the ability to change them too?

Why not just be able to stack training skills? That way you could train different skills when on holiday or whatever

Yes I think it would be a great idea also to "Stack" skill training, as in like a list of skills to train one after the other.
Then you can plan out all the skills you like to train in a certain order without having to worry if a skill has stopped training etc :)
Could call it the "Set Skills List" Option maybe? :P

Either an out of game interface or stacking would be great, and not just because we might be at work. I've lost skill training time due to being "stuck"! And I never got that time back.

Or yet another option for you.. set up a VNC server on your home pc, along with your basic firewall. Allow access on 5900 from your works IP, then you can log into eve from work whenever you like. Framerate is painfull, but functional. Good enough for setting up skills for sure. ------------------------------ No sig is a good sig. ------------------------------ |

Edited by: Humax on 05/10/2003 13:39:47 Hmm VNC.. not very practical I think. Mainly because of the speed and the fact that when most people are at work they are behind fairly strong firewalls. But the idea of being able to stack or schedule the training is a great idea. As well as the web interface. Really cant see it being to hard. After all its only linking to a database.

possible ideas for future use
1) web based client for amending skills / starting new training
2) adding an over run feature so that when a skill reaches level 1 it carries on to level 2 until you hit abort, and also saves the point where you stopped training
3) do it on a timer base, where you jsut acquire skill points over time and when you have enough you Allocate those skill pointas to a skill you want.
4) experience based skill points where you get skill points for using a skill ( like in dungeons and dragons) (yes I'm sad, i used to play that)
5) kill based experience
loads of other bonuses etc :) ----------------------------------------------------- In space .. no-one can hear you munching crisps in the back seat of your Hauler ! ----------------------------------------------------- Show me the money |

Don't ask them to reply on everything. Just considder the possibility that they don't have the time to reply, but that they will eventually fix it anyway.

I don't think CCP will implement offgame interaction with EVE like skill setting, nor skill training stack/qeue.
The whole notion of fix time skill training like in EVE is briliant marketing, when you do a quick login to set your skills, you might just have a look on the market, and find something you like, bang a few gate pirates on the way there. Oh and that agentmission offered will only take 5 minutes and BANG. Your stuck playing EVE again to the frustration of your wife/gf. Anyone recognice this scenario?
This all tribute to player addiction and thus more people online to take care of EVE everyday life, more fun for all and more cash for CCP.
(I recall somone during Beta refering to the skinner box theory of addiction, I think it was called that anyway)

Kill based experience = worst idea ever. Never EVER should this even be considered for EVE. I would quit the day it was added.

I agree that it is a good idea.
However, having to put some effort in is not so bad either considering there's probably heaps of players that would level accounts for ebay selling.
That probably already happens but I think it's a minor issue due to the work it actually takes to change a skill now.

I've been using VNC for quite a while now, and it works like a charm. It's like PCAnywhere, but it's free. It's true that most people at work are behind a strong firewall, but most are mainly blocking incoming connections, instead of outgoing (in my case anyway). If you have a broadband connection the update frequency should be fine for changing your skill training.
Make sure you use ssh as a proxy though, to make sure nobody is snooping in on the data you're transfering.
