Undock from your prefered station, board one of the shuttles out there and SD it for a test.
A Reaper wont do because you wont get no insurance out of it.
Takes 120 seconds to go boom, and another 30 seconds to board your other ship.

And yes, self destruct does give insurance payout.

Yes it does... just tested it with my atron, you get 100% payout if you selfdestruct your ship. (so long as she is insured)

You'll get insurance when selfdestructing, even when you hit selfdestruct, eject from the ship, and dock in a station, the selfdestruct timer continues to tick :) kinda fun and good for jokes too

Will you still get it if someone else comes by, boards the ship and turns off the destruct timer?

Doing or not you always have the option to strip of all your fitting and move your ship to a belt, do a mission or go to 0.4< allowing other players to do target pratice on you  , of course the last option is dangerous and take long.
Go to a belt and allow the 5k rats kill your Erebus, just take a while....

I wanna plug my idea:
all ships that get concordokkened should not be given insurance payouts.
this does not STOP secure space ganking, it simply balances the risk vs reward aspect considering that if a person gets his raven ganked to get 100 million bucks of zydrine... he only loses 10 or so million and gains 100 million.
its silly that an insurance company would pay out someone committing a crime :P

Do you know how many ships are destroyed by accident (shooting at a gang mate for fun and realising it's not a corp mate, accidently targeting a stargate, smartbombing a gang mates drones). How can you see if somebody is ganking in empire or hitting somebody by accident ? I like the idea, but it will make a little mistake very costly
