First off, I'm pretty new to the game, so maybe there is just something I am missing in the bigger picture.
I've been playing around with mining a bit and after crunching some numbers to determine whether I'm better off refining my ore, or selling the ore as is, I am a bit puzzled. Of all of the lower ore types that are available in my area, Plagioclase seems to offer the least isk per hour. I thought as you go 'up the alphabet' for the various ores, they become more valuable (generally). From what I've seen, plagioclase is hands down the worst ore to refine if you want to maximize your profits (over time). Even mining veldspar is more profitable than plagioclase, which seems weird to me since plagio is supposedly more rare/valuable.
Is there something I'm missing, or is this just how it is?

Local conditions will greatly affect which ores you mine. In general the alphabet rule is true, but there are exceptions.
Scordite tends to be by far and way the best low level ore. Though local mineral prices may change that.

Plagioclase offers pyerite in quantity. If a person would rather mine, than buy, they would want to mine plagioclase.

I don't know about the pyerite thing. I think Scordite has a higher percentage of Pyerite per volume of ore (unless my calculations are off).
Simplified calculations: Assume a newbie miner is using a pair of miner 1's, so he's pulling 80m3 of ore per minute, and say he mines for 10 minutes on both ores.
He'd get roughly (not counting refining losses, but since they'd be the same, we can factor them out for comparison purposes):
5333 Scordite refined into 6656 Pyerite (and some tritanium) 2285 Plagioclase refined into 3512 Pyerite (and the Trit and Mex).
It seems like if plagioclase had a volume of around 0.25, it would be much more in line with the other ores in terms of isk/hour earning potential (although, even in this case, Scordite would be a better source of Pyerite). The game has been out too long for this to be some kind of oversite by CCP, so I wonder why they made Plagioclase the redheaded stepchild of the ores (so to speak).

I mine to sell, not refine, and found that raw plagio brings in more money than scordite per unit.

I did some math and got the same result. I believe (haven't done a lot of checking) that the price of tritanium has been climbing recently and this has pushed scordite past plagioclase.

Plagioclase has the best cargo to mineral rate for mexallon. Scordite has the best cargo to mineral rate for pyerite. -- Lil Miner |

Its the most effciient way to mine Mexallion...

Scordite offers more pyerite per unit that plagioclase, but it doesn't offer any Mexallon whatsoever, and mexallon sells for at least 2 to 3 times pyerite in my region.
I've actually been mining velsdspar a lot recently because I had an NPC agent offering 2 isk per unit for 5 million units. Y'all do the math on how easy that is. Sig removed, please keep it below 24000 bytes, email [email protected] if you have any questions - Xorus |

Pretty simple why.
omber is overmined everywhere, kernite too. If you fly a covetor with t2 crystal, you need roid that have alot of mineral in. With the size of omber roid in empire, you loose more cycle and its not even worht it to mine.
but you can find plagio everywhere, and player dont usually mine it. If you have a high mining rate, then it become pretty to mine. And you not lose time to find omber roids or better.
I refine it, sell it , 10 millions for mexalon and 10 million for pyrite. I mine one million of mexalon and 3 to 4 million of pyrite.
Its not the best way to be rich, but i can mine lonely without problem and im sure that my system will be full again of plagio when i come back.

There's a great ore value calculator on evegeek.com.
Something strange has happened to the mineral market lately. There's a buy order in Villore for 231m trit @ nearly 2isk per unit, and several other similarly high priced ones. Most of the other minerals have been more stable over time, although megacyte shot up from around 4.5k to around 5k recently. I guess that trit's going into someone's outpost or titan building programme...
