The purpose of this is to introduce a shallow area to the deep space environment, where pilots can get their feet wet with more dangerous play styles.
The concept is fairly simple. A system is divided into two sections, with a frontier between the two.
On the high sec side, normal encounters, Concord presence, and expected reward levels.
On the NULL sec side, (NPC null equivalent), no Concord, riskier null style NPC encounters, null sized reward levels. (This would include the asteroids of null, etc)
Both of those are already in the game, so should not need further explanation. Local Chat, is unaffected by this divide, and both sides share the same channel as before, and no distinction is possible to determine which pilots are on which side here.
Here is the key element, BETWEEN the two is a no man's land which ship autopilots will automatically warp across, as it is considered an unsafe region due to environmental hazards. (A session change occurs when moving from one side to the other, but this leaves out the bottleneck of the gate itself due to the distance being relatively local) Criminal flagged players who have already invoked Concord will be unable to cross over to evade them, as their autopilots will shut down on the border before entering the null side.
The null sec side is separate, and flagged by the local empire and Concord as: This space is unsafe and unregulated, enter at your own risk, you have been warned.
(Some catastrophe has happened within the range of this side of the system, but NPC pirates and players are both notoriously prone to ignoring warnings such as this)
Rumors abound: One suggests that a Pirate faction has hacked some of the systems used by Concord, and cyno jammed the system from their entry, as well as screened it from their surveillance. Another claims that an effect unseen beyond a wormhole has appeared on the edge of the system, and somehow it has resulted in the affected space to be written off by the usual authorities as impossible to maintain. My favorite part is the removal of a bottle neck. I wouldn't like this everywhere (not even most places), but i could definitely see some fun use between certain systems. |

so its a way to quickly jump into a null type area without the risk of gate camps?
-is it at all possible to have the behaviour of separate sec status in one system? -will doing a session change in the middle of warp mean u can land before u load the environment? should u land cloaked or invincible for a period of time? -do ppl get criminal status for shooting ppl in null? so will they be able to kill and then return to the high sec side to avoid repercussions? -will bubbles work in this system?
i'd expect no miners or ratters will cross over to the dangerous side if anyone is in local. it just means u dnt have to be cloaked to afk camp. 4. i'd expect no miners or ratters will cross over to the dangerous side if anyone is in local. it just means u dnt have to be cloaked to afk camp. Good questions. I will refer to the null side as dark and the high sec side as light, to keep it simple here.
1. By having a session change, it effectively can load new system aspects the same way it does now for system changes. This would effectively make one system into two, as far as most details went.
2. A cloaked effect could be created by the environment itself, which could duplicate the gate cloak effect. This would be a balance aspect, and may not be necessary. On the other hand, those able to quickly scan might make it a practical detail to include. Depends on whether load time was an issue for this.
3. No sec status hit on the dark side, and yes, people would be able to run to the light side IF they were not pointed or bubbled. Hit and run might be a popular tactic. Yes, bubbles will work on the dark side.
4. If fewer miners and ratters work the spawns on the dark side, that just leaves more for those who work out how to play profitably there.
It is probable, as a balance point, that no cyno usage may be possible here. It could be as simple as no systems are close enough to jump from, to the effect simply blocks all connections. Upgrading Local to Eliminate All AFK Influence What if Local Chat changed, Hunting the Cloaked... |

lol 'the dark side'
it sounds interesting, as all ur ideas always are. i didnt even think of the possibility of hot dropping caps and then warping them to high. dnt know how much that matters though.
not sure if it will be under utilized because of the risk averse, or make it too easy to get the rewards of null or a perfect balance of the two.
could something like this be achieved by making the grids around gates and stations subject to CONCORD and high sec mechanics, but belts, sites and all space in between be lawless? i dnt know, but i imagine making rules for grids would be easier than drawing imaginary lines across a system. Seems interesting enough. Ideally I'd like to see such a thing tested in a new area of space. Kind of like WH was. Perhaps they can change non-FW low-sec to be like this, alternatively. Place is kind of useless now anyways...
The chance of this actually happening is close to 0 though. |

The chance of this actually happening is close to 0 though. I could find it interesting to see some relatively underutilized low sec systems treated this way, too.
But yes, having a test system be entirely new could be the best way forward.
OPTIONAL: What if the thinking on this was reversed, and the split was to take the form of an NPC null system that had a section of high security space included. The reasoning could be quite simple, a strategic empire military base, or corporate stronghold that paid Concord so they could have a safe customer area, etc. (The high sec side would need some form of connection so players could reach it without additional risk, part of the point is that high sec play be able to engage in a limited dip into the dark side) The optional null side system would be cyno capable for the dark side. Yeah, jump freighters might be tempted by this too... Upgrading Local to Eliminate All AFK Influence What if Local Chat changed, Hunting the Cloaked... |

a neglected CONCORD station where they send the goody two shoe agents as punishment for not conforming to their corrupt ways.

yeah, ignore me. It might even find a use as a halfway house kind of thing.
Those seeking Concord redemption, might be able to access possibly unique agents here. Upgrading Local to Eliminate All AFK Influence What if Local Chat changed, Hunting the Cloaked... |
