Sooo.... I've been playing and am hitting a wall.
I am mining to get some money together to get a better ship while paying for skills and stuff. Then I am getting molested in the belts by some lunatics who want to tell me how to mine and where to mine... So I start ratting. Ratting in highsec is about as lucrative as sitting outside the station shaking a can with ISK while begging. I go to lowsec and the income there is fair compared to the highsec pennies. Now I learned the hard way that every single friggin .5 system is infested with player corps who pown that station next to it and the next few jumps into low sec. So.... I as a newb fly in, rat in some .5 belt with my little frig just to be pointed, webbed, tazed, and made fun off in local, while being blown up by anything between 5 and 8 frigs and cruisers. GF my sweet rear.... Going out further and fast and furious yields more peace as the .5 pansies seem to shy away from that area and other large ships seem to smile about that lonely venture in -.9.... But.... now the damn rats are finishing me off... So I am back mining... piling up dough... slowly... so I can loose larger ships...
How do you, or did you overcome that initial hurdle without belting out RL money for plex->ISK>bigger ****...Is it pay to play in the end?

Honestly the way you progress is just pick what you want to do and do it. If you want to mine, go to a system that is not as populated, a little off the beaten trail, and no one will bother you. For extra safety use a tanked procurer, which by the way, is getting a buff soon. If you want to shoot little red + in HS then just do missions. It take a little effort to progress to lvl 4 but it is not hard and lvl 4 missions are more profitable then mining. If you want to explore and shoot things in low sec - then just crack open a map. Most of lowsec is empty or near empty. The systems that connect directly to hs tend to have pirates - move away from them and you will be fine. Also learn the cloak warp trick. Also you can make friends with the locals - if you are not an asshat, they might let you join them and they can show you why shooting other players is more fun then shooting little red +s.
Finally, the most important thing that you can do to improve your quality of enjoyment of eve is find a group of like minded players to play with and join them.

I recommend trying to form some kind of synergy between your income and pvp if you are so inclined. Really, plex is for people that do not enjoy the pve aspects and need isk to support their exploding ship replacements. People who plex don't "win" at all in this game, they just make prettier fireballs.
That said, I do plex now and again. Since I'm a sailor I'm at sea a lot and have a narrow window of playtime when in port, meanwhile, $20 or so for a plex is trivial. With a plex I can fit an ishtar leave station, get blown up and be right back where I started in less than an hour. Without plex it would probably take me a week or two to save up for that ishtar. Which really means two or three months later for me since I might only have 5 days in port in a month :P Because you disdained all my counsel, and my reproof you ignoredGÇö I, in my turn, will laugh at your doom; will mock when terror overtakes you; -- Ultimate Griefer's Handbook |

Finding a good corp that enjoys the same things as you always helps. Especially when it comes to mining where you can have a fleet running and BS with people in comms. That may also help against the so called highsec saviors that harass miners.
In addition to that there is mission running, as mentioned. Building up to level 4s takes a bit, but can be good money. Consider salvaging the wrecks as well for extra money.
Additionally, low/null exploration can be good money with very little time spent training. I did an experiment last year where I made a new character and trained up hacking/archaeology to 3, and a few scanning skills, then eventually covops. Playing part time I made an estimated 400m in 30 days. It will also help teach your survival skills: paying attention to local and knowing who is around, dscan, etc, etc. My twitch stream to help new players: http://www.twitch.tv/biohazrd51

Exploration has bad massive QOL fixes and you barely need any skills to get started. Income is random, but is probably something like 20/40/60 mil an hour over time, in HS/LS/0.0 respectively. There are definately much larger windfalls in 0.0 though.
If you ever want to leave highsec, I would recommend not staying there and running level 4 missions. You learn terrible habits you will struggle to break, and a sense of risk aversion that is misplaced in a video game. "Do not touch anything unnecessarily. Beware of pretty girls in dance halls and parks who may be spies, as well as bicycles, revolvers, uniforms, arms, dead horses, and men lying on roads -- they are not there accidentally." -Soviet infantry manual, issued in the 1930 |

A. Join a freaking corp. Its a MMO after all. B. If you dont want to join a corp, make friends. There is a community for anybody.
C. Ratting in highsec sucks when you can just as easily be doing missions.
D. EVE just aint for everybody. Im not saying it is not the game for you, but if you find out that EVE and you are just not going to be a happy marriage, no hard feelings, you will not be the last to find that out.
That said, as with point B, talk to others. There are plenty of "vets" around that love to help new players in EVE. Be it with on site help or just having someone to annoy with your questions when you have them.
How I overcame the hurdle.....made friends, joined a corp.

Unless you enjoy mining, its not the best activity to use to to support other more explosive habits. The income for a solo high sec miner is very low compared to missions, exploration, gas mining and faction warfare. As for "Lunatics that tell you how to mine and where to mine" that is completely within their right to do so. Its also within your right to move, pay them off, or blow them up.
As for dying to rats in 0.5, that takes some work. If you post your ship/fit we might be able to help with that.
Finally, MAKE FRIENDS. It helps. New player resources: http://wiki.eveuniversity.org/Main_Page - General information http://www.evealtruist.com/p/know-your-enemy.html - Learn to PvP http://belligerentundesirables.com/ - Safaris, Awoxes, Ganking and Griefing-á |

In my very early quest to earn some decent ISK as a < 1M skill points pilot with no intention to ever mine, I tried various activities with little success until I eventually settled for exploration on an el cheapo scanning frigate. It brought back many many many times its worth from low and null sec systems. Careful examination of the star map statistics, paranoid use of the D-scan, and bookmarked 'safe spots' kept me out of trouble well enough.
I soon hit a different kind of wall though. It appears if you don't want to go the "bigger ships" route until you're sitting in a T1 battleship (and then you'll hit the skill wall anyway), you *HAVE* to learn a whole lot of rank V skills to progress, be it to unlock ships, modules or 'advanced' skills |

Find a quiet system. There are many but nobody will tell you because chances are high they won't be quiet anymore then. And yes, EVE is Pay to play if we talk about subs, if and only if you don't have really lots of isk. I mean annual sub for a new account is 99 USD compared to 8.4 of isk...at least for me that's ridiculous if I mention how much work in RL this means.

The better it is, the harder you will get into it. I mean if you want to advance you have to take your time...and will be rewarded, believe me. Otherwise, why not fly a shizzy Tengu after a few months? It's easy to get into, a hand full of low rank Level 5 Skills to make a uberPvE boat out of it and all that? |

I should add - that there is no need to plex in this game if you do not want to. I have never plexed. Eve like every MMO can be grindy. Plex allows you to skip the grind, but it does not give you the skills to play the game or to use the tools that you buy. Its a very bad idea for a new player to plex. If a new player plexes and buys a lot of shinny stuff, all that is going to happen is alot of expensive kms.
Also if you want to make isk as a new player and shoot +s, try combat exploration sites. In particular Ded 3s and 4s. The drop is random but frequently can be in the 100-300 million of isk. If you stick to cheap pvp ships its more then sufficient to keep you going. OFC when you get to be old and crusty and start using Blops and other expensive things then you will need a better stream of income, but that is far down the road for a new player. Well you dont "have" to learn V skills, it just makes you more incrementally more efficient. Ofc there are some modules that these skills unlock, and ofc these modules are desirable, but that is the nature of of an MMO - there is always some form of progression. But until you "learn" the V skills you can still be functional and perform reasonably well in most tasks in eve.

Do some of everything! It will help you find what you want to do.
Go to the market and browse the categories of skills - you may find something you want to train for.
If it's ships you're after, open ISIS and browse ships, see what skills are required to fly the hull. - you get bonuses for training those skills. [edit] get good at flying what you have before getting a bigger hull.
Consider the ship's weapons, scanners, shields, armor, etc. - and look at those skills Ships modifications require skill training too. Each mod makes something on the ship work better (often at the cost of something else.)
You'll want to train many many skills to 2 or 3 before training some few skills to 5 - the skills you train to 5 at first will only be done to allow you to train the next size larger or better ship, weapon, ISK making skill, etc. Example - you have to train mining to 5 before you can fly a large mining ship (you stay in space longer, more ISK/hour) |
