It's been real, and it's been fun.
So many awesome memories. For so many years.
I remember the first season, the guests sat in one of those elaborate red leather barber chairs.

Oh gosh yes. I have so many 70s memories of Carson. Letterman hit the airwaves when I was entering college, so I was the prime audience back then. He's great, but they are so different, comparison isn't really fair to either side. Once Carson left, my parents just switched to Letterman, as Leno was too stale even for them (in their 70s). As Jimmy Kimmel has proven the past few months since taking over for Leno, the late night talk show format is clearly past it's age, and begging to be interred in the TV concept hall of fame.
Speculation is going around various outlets that the one who may be able to revive it is Ellen Degeneres.
But of course nothing will be finalized until next year. "He has mounted his hind-legs, and blown crass vapidities through the bowel of his neck."-á - Ambrose Bierce on Oscar Wilde's Lecture in San Francisco 1882 |

Herzog Wolfhammer wrote:I remember being told about Letterman back in school - the few who stayed up late enough to watch it were quite enthusiastic about this new eddy show. I remember the old guy who would throw toast at the audience.
Oh god. Larry "Bud" Mellman. Funniest was when he was handing out little hot steamed towels when people got off the busses at Port Authority. That's great, but your vivid description of the late night hosts is in great error. Johnny Carson was "inflamatory" ? I think not........
None of them are. Mis-informed you are, my Young Padewan.
What a spectacular display of complete ignorance. "He has mounted his hind-legs, and blown crass vapidities through the bowel of his neck."-á - Ambrose Bierce on Oscar Wilde's Lecture in San Francisco 1882 |

That's a show on a cable outlet. Where all the bad ones are.
And it's not originally broadcast as "late night". And it's a satirical news program, not meant to be taken seriously. It's a completely different animal from what we are discussing.
We are talking about hosts on the major broadcast networks.
Regardless, neither Carson, Leno, Hall, Letterman, Rivers..............they are absolutely not like that. At all.
You just cannot handle being wrong, huh ???? "He has mounted his hind-legs, and blown crass vapidities through the bowel of his neck."-á - Ambrose Bierce on Oscar Wilde's Lecture in San Francisco 1882 |

Believe me, Rush Limbaugh, Bill O'Reilly, et al, are only watched by mouth-breathing rednecks in the Red States.
Also: Graham Norton. Ali G. Jonathan Ross. Matthew Wright.

Note that he will be appearing as himself, and not as the "Stephen Colbert" character. "He has mounted his hind-legs, and blown crass vapidities through the bowel of his neck."-á - Ambrose Bierce on Oscar Wilde's Lecture in San Francisco 1882 |

If you check on Youtube you'l find a few of his out of character interviews....he rocks in those situations too. I remember a particular out of character interview with Neil DeGrasse Tyson for example. He's very very clever...
He's the only talk show host I ever saw invite Brian Eno. "He has mounted his hind-legs, and blown crass vapidities through the bowel of his neck."-á - Ambrose Bierce on Oscar Wilde's Lecture in San Francisco 1882 |
