It's been real, and it's been fun.
So many awesome memories. For so many years.
I remember the first season, the guests sat in one of those elaborate red leather barber chairs.

I don't know how he lasted this long... guess I was spoiled with Carson. Man the tonight show was awesome back then. |

Oh gosh yes. I have so many 70s memories of Carson. Letterman hit the airwaves when I was entering college, so I was the prime audience back then. He's great, but they are so different, comparison isn't really fair to either side. Once Carson left, my parents just switched to Letterman, as Leno was too stale even for them (in their 70s).

Yeah, they are different. Same media, different format. But Carson was king however you cut it. I watched Leno more than Letterman, but just depends who the guest was. In Carson's case, he was the featured guest every night 
But I went to talk radio after Carson for the most part. Then Art Bell showed up, the king of late night radio which was ideal airwaves while tooling on computers. Nothing gets any better than listening to a talk radio host squirm for an hour after accidentally gluing his lips together with crazy glue!

Will miss Letterman.

As Jimmy Kimmel has proven the past few months since taking over for Leno, the late night talk show format is clearly past it's age, and begging to be interred in the TV concept hall of fame.
Speculation is going around various outlets that the one who may be able to revive it is Ellen Degeneres.
But of course nothing will be finalized until next year.

I never got into late night TV. Not sure why, but I figure I was always just running around and doing something else with friends.
It is amazing that he lasted so long and a lot can be said for that even though competition for late night television was not very high pre 1995. After that, the competition was plenty but the quality is very low, so staying at or near the top is not very hard I would hazard as most of the population is quite interested in celebrities. I guess that actually may be why I never got into late night in the first place. If I was up that late I did not want to be sitting around listening to other people's glory stories  |

I remember being told about Letterman back in school - the few who stayed up late enough to watch it were quite enthusiastic about this new eddy show. I remember the old guy who would throw toast at the audience.
It's rumored that Howard Stern might take that time slot and frankly that could be a good idea.

Grew up with Carson as my grandmother was a big fan of his. Great memories watching Carson with my grandmother as she would let me stay up past my bed time when I would visit her. She was quite the night owl, just like myself.
Used to watch Letterman as I grew older.
Pretty much stopped watching late night after Carson retired, and Letterman was getting a little stale for me.
Though recently, I do watch Conan a little more then I care to admit.
Surrender is still your slightly less painful option. |

That's a show on a cable outlet. Where all the bad ones are.
And it's not originally broadcast as "late night". And it's a satirical news program, not meant to be taken seriously. It's a completely different animal from what we are discussing.
We are talking about hosts on the major broadcast networks.
Regardless, neither Carson, Leno, Hall, Letterman, Rivers..............they are absolutely not like that. At all.
You just cannot handle being wrong, huh ????

yeah ok ill cede the point like I said mostly we don't watch those types of programmes over here ...but I really don't understand how these type of people are actually given a platform to spout off on things and give opinions on subjects they don't really know much about .
