Hi, I've been playing EVE for a few months as a mining character. This got fairly booring, so I decided to try my hand at fighting. Any tips on what sort of character to build/ship to buy would be useful.
Also, the NPC's all seem to have really small bounties. How can you make any decent money from fighting?

Edited by: Myiesha on 08/05/2006 16:49:35 NPC Bounties depends on where you hunt. Lower sec-> Higher bounties to the million+ mark. Remeber bounties and salvage drops are lower for mission rats. A large chunk of your isks will come from salvage (for belt rats) or LP Offers (For agent running).
As to what type of chatacter/ship? Realy up to you. Almost anything works. I general suggest HAC's and BS's for PVE but realy depends on your style. As for character? what ever is required for the ship you like. :)

Attribute wise, spread fairly evenly with nothing in Empathy. Although Per/Wil govern flying/gunning skills, you'll need a whole barrage of other (more Int/Mem) based ones to compete.
I'd suggest finding a Level 1 Kill (Security, Internal Security, Surveillance, Command, Intelligence) Agent and running missions for them. Bounties, loot rewards, mission rewards and loyalty point offers will bring in the ISK.

Most of what I'd say has been said above. lower sec status bigger the npc etc etc blah blah mission rats are easier to find (talk to your agent and there they are!) but have lower bounties, and often dont drop loot.
one thing I'd add: always remeber to collect that loot. even if it looks terrible I bet it will refine nicely (even if your refining skills are terrible its a nice bit of extra income) and you might find sometihng nice :D
I will save you, but make sure you bring beer - Wrangler and cAKe - Imaran I thought it was bREe, omgi'mgivingawaymodroomsecwetsftl - Cortes when come back ... bring PIE. Me like PIE. -Capsicum |

A mission rat is a ship of a npc pirate faction found as part of an accepted mission from an agent. Rats you find in complexes also tend to have fairly poor drops, except for the main 'boss' and his entourage.
The other main flavour of rat is a belt rat, which you find by warping to random asteroid belts.
You tend to find a lot more rats in missions compared to belts, thus while you get more money from the bounties, they don't drop such good loot to balance it out.

NPCs pay off well in lower sectors. Wing Leaders in .3 pay off 175K each. Last night I bagged my first 950Ker in 0.0. If you have the market skills sell the loot. Hunt until you have enough loot to fill your biggest cargo hold and haul it to Jita (or nearest hub).
I'm Gal, so do most of my hunting in a Thorax with strong drone skills. Good luck.

Fighting NPCs (aka Rats) will also get booring after a while. It is a way to make money but a fairly booring way IMHO. If you want to be a true combat pilot, learn to pvp. Come to our PvP University and we can sort you with that.

A (trade) hub is a popular place for trading. The big ones usually are, or lie close to, popular missionrunning systems (Rens, Ours) or 0.0 entrypoints (Agil, Esa).
Jita is the most popular trade hub atm (afaik anyway).

Edited by: Admiral Farsight on 09/05/2006 19:45:06 So, how long should I play for before joining a corp? Also, how long should it take (calculation infrequent gameplay) to get a cruiser?
BTW Farsight is my new Cal. missile-based fighter, Darius is my miner

Get into a corp as soon as possible. Make sure the corp has been around a few months. If you don't like it, leave and join another - easy

Actually, I've overheard CEO's talking about characters that have been in lots of corps in a short period of time as not very attractive candidates. My plan is to lay low, listen up on channels, read forums and see which group(s) I'd fit in best with before committing.
