generally, a blob of characters in noob corps created in a short span all mining in the same system in identical ships is a good indication. as are stylish names like gadksgfadlfga, but a lot have names (you will learn to recognise the style)

From my own personal experiences with em they seem to have long names of either gibberish (SAngndksn0047) or long names with numbers in the place of alot of letters. They usually have other ships with the same names cept they might have a number 1 at the end of their name or something.
I'v also recently heard of them naming very normal and boring western names like Eric10 and Dav1d and stuff. They arnt too hard to spot to be honest.

IF you warp into a system, and see 4 guys with completely random names all in noob corps, all running Execurors (whatever the name of that gallente cruiser), and mining into the same can... chances are those are macro miners, possible just an isk farmer manually running the ships however. You will see them using cruisers to mine, because they cannot train ORE barges on trial accounts. >-------------------------------------------------< Asteroids are my breakfast cereal. |

Here is a typical example of what a macro groupe looks like....
Fly to belt see multiple mining ships of same type or similar clusteresd around each other forming a ball of ships. All named a bit like this.....
Jo blogs1 jo blogs2 jo blogs3 jo blogs4
etc.
The can will have a basic name and there movements will be robotic.
Now ultimate way of finding out if its a macro or not is to just fly up to the can and take it if you get an INTELIGENT reply then take that as meaning there is a player at the controlls not just a macro. Either way there is no reson not to steal from them only thing is if its a macro petition them to the GM's first so you are not accused of cheating yourself.

Forgot to mention only difference in my mind from an ore thief perspective between amaco mining op and a non macro mining op is that you have to petition if they are macros.

Or, just transfer the ore to a container of your own and blow it up!

Edited by: Doyenne on 09/05/2006 20:45:23 in previous game, the way GM detected them was by talking with them and asking, with incorrect spelling, somehing dumb
but you know what that leads to? sharding... noone is REQUIRED to speak english
so you saw macros who auto-answered "le petit chat est mort" or stuff in czech :p
in my honest opinion, macro comes whenever you have something that can be automatic for profit
sounds like an oxymoron yes? well the little lines in between are that i'm blaming it on the mining mechanics, not on the exploiters... because if it pays, someone will do it ______________________

Usually "real" people will start screaming if you get near their can. Alternatively, check their standings. If newb corp for over a few months, likely. If only has agent standings with newbie agent, likely.
Another good tactic is to look for groups. Apocs are the favored ship class for "mass" mining operations. "Guard ships" are a good giveaway too - usually something small like a caracal. (You'd see a Caracal guarding a 9 apoc fleet for example)
Someone mentioned above that convoing the suspect is a tip off. This is true. No response or a "generated response" (had a guy hit me with the same phrase 4 times) is a dead giveaway.
It should be noted that there are "farmers" and "Macroers". Both are scum, but the former is less then the latter.

Macrointel (The Channel) - I watched the chat for about a month after being involved in a successful kill on an APOC macro. After a while I noticed that some of these guys are just high-sec pirates on a powertrip.
They think they are saving the universe, but many times I heard local chat saying "look out for groups of kestrals suicide killing all strip miners". I know some of the peeps in Macrointel were involved.
What you'll hear from them is a farmer is worse than a macro or on the same level. However they have no way to prove that someone is farming isk. I have a problem with macros, blow them up. But what exactly is "farming isk". I mean, if someone is willing to sit at their computer with and alt to mine ALL DAY LONG, that's their sad life. There just seems to be a misconception in the macro hunters minds that pretty much anyonen with a retriever is an isk farmer. You never know, they could be mining ore for the corp or (even if in a n00b corp) they could be filling a private order. Macros are very easy to spot, they don't talk to you if you are sitting next to your can... If they do, they just happened to be swinging by that computer.
Its just the trigger happy "macro hunters" that get me. They'll shoot anyone that doesn't respond in local. I'm sorry, but alot of us watch TV while we mine.
Even better is the phenomenon of the 'new' macro. The lvl 2 caracal mission runners. Yes, it is true. I've actually seen these guys.
The way it works: Macro can run through basic operations of modules so fighting is no problem. There just has to be someone there to accept the missions (hence why they come out one right after the other).
I was actually running a mission in a caracal myself at the time I spotted this phenomenon. I undocked in the mix of 7 caracals all heading straight up (on the default undock sequence) one right after another. ALL 7 DAYS OLD, all in n00b corps, all in caracals. They all stopped at the default location, warping one after the other in sequence. About 10 minutes later I warped out of the system to see 5 groupings of n00b corp loot around the jumpgate from the last hour of work. If that's not a macro, I don't know what is. <<-------------------------------------------->> Mining Division Head

Hack their computer or stand next to them, then ask for their ID.
