My personal take on this is, that for some of us 3d modelling is our professional work... when I started paying attention to eve in 2000-2001, the models were amazing - I could'nt beleive that they were ingame ships. when I started as a player, in early 2004, the models were at first passable, until mistakes were noticed.
I used to *love* the ferox: fantastic design... until about 6 months ago, when I noticed two vertex points behind the bridge that have'nt been welded together, leaving a hole in the mesh.
this is literally a 10 second job to fix in any 3d package. and seeing it every time is like having an itch I can't scratch. I really can't describe how infuriating it is, because I cannot not notice the faults, once I notice them.
I love what CCP have done. I'd kill to be in a position to be in the art department for CCP, as a conceptual visualist, and as a 3d artist using Maya, not Max. But I'm also a professional artist with the discerning eye that that entails - and if that measn saying when some of the work is disappointing, then I will. A lot of the early models are... well... a bit amateurish, is a polite way of saying it.
the "new" amarr style, slightly disappoints me. one part of the color scheme of shaders through the alpha mapping for the materials was, particularly in the frigates, I saw a lot of the panels as a matte ivory or vellum, contrasted with the golden bronzes. I'll miss that colourscheme.
Of what I've seen, the executioner lacks a certain curve on the inner face of each side that I found so perfectly sexy, but that's just a slight detail. The evolution is, generally, appealing. The Impairor, well, I'd ever thought I'd like the look of a rookie ship that much. the design's still too clunky around the back (I think those thrusters need to be mounted better) but it's cute. Megathron... ooh. dark. very dark. I can see where the design ethos of the later ships has influenced the remodelling. a model so dark, I can't really tell much from statics. Scorpion. I think the upper superstructure of the scorpion looks superb, the lower section, a little disappointing. the texture work, however, has too much reflectivity and edge highlighting that makes the surfaces feel "sticky" in appearance. I'm not convinced by the texture work at all, really. I love the colour scheme for the lights, but it's poorly implemented
and lastly, the apoc. I hope that's a WIP. if it's not then god, someone has no subtlety in the structures... it's truly dire work atm, with no form or care in there. shame.
