Like the subject says - I've killed lots of npc pirates, and haven't killed, target-locked, or even collided with any other players. I've gotten lots of messages about my security status being adjusted by positive fractions when I've killed the npc pirates. Anyone else experience this? Any solution?

That's normal. Killing a npc pirate will give you something like +0,0001 security, so you'll have to kill 1000 of them to see any difference. Higher level (bounty) pirates will generally give more sec rating boost.

To be more specific, to kill a very low level pirate you get a 0.0001 security status upgrade.
Your ingame character stats show only 2 places such as 1.1
Eve rounds the ingame stats up to the nearest 0.1
Therefore to go from a 0.0 status to a 0.1 status you will need to kill (500) 0.0001 pirates to see the change.
Its not as many as it sounds and once into 0.6 and 0.5 systems you should find plenty of 0.0002 pirates which will half the time needed to raise your status.

Sometimes being shot on-sight or at least being 'kindly' persuaded to leave the system...

What is the effect of having 0,1 instead of 0,0 on NPC ??

To date, NPC pirates do not differentiate between a good (0.1+) security status or a bad (-0.1) one.
Player faction standing and sec status will eventually have a role in this game (as seen by space station vs. player interaction) and may determine the action NPC pirates and stations take with you.
Most stations do recognize faction rating and may not let you dock or worse attack you on site. Positive security status is of no concern to them.
Negative status however, should it be too low will get you shot at by every sentry gun and Cop within range. _________ "Our inmates are dedicated to producing the best license plates for your ships." -Saturn, Warden and CEO of Prison Corp |

it takes a looooong time to get it to go up, I'm sooo proud of my 0.7 sec rating :)
but about the effect, lets say you have -8 with the blood raiders, your friend has -5 with them. You both are minding your own business somewhere, blood raiders spawn, they can target both you and your friend. Because of your worse sec rating they target you first.

I havent found a system to their targeting strategy. Im over 2.0 and sometimes they target me sometimes its other corp members first.
Distance is usually the factor on who they target first. Sometimes they just switch targets and move to another for no appearent reason.
Good question. Faction status doesnt appear to affect their hostility toward you...yet _________ "Our inmates are dedicated to producing the best license plates for your ships." -Saturn, Warden and CEO of Prison Corp |

i've seen an option with one of the second or third agents you are assigned that reads something like, "yo, can you do something about my security rating? it's getting a bit dodgy." (or words to that effect.)
how does this help? anyone ever tried it? |

Ah the good old days... I remember when the game first came out, you gained tones of security status bonus per kill. (I guess it was too easy to be "evil" and then kill a few pirates to gain back your lost sec status, that's why they made the positive gains so much less now.) Made it up to +2.5 in the first month or so until that patch came out, an then only another 0.4 since... but boy those increases sure feel good when they come.
