I just picked up the 14 day trial, after getting sick of just about every other MMO out there, and had a question or two.
I was just wondering if these constant server problems are the norm here at EVE. In the last 24 hours (give or take) I've been able to play for a grand total of 2 hours or so, and for my sake before I start paying for this game, I'd like to know if this would be something to plan on being a regular occurance.
If I just so happened to have terrible timing, and picked up the game in the middle of something big, feel free to tell me to chill out and I sure will, but I'd much rather have a bit of assurance that I won't be looking at server's that rival the legendary downtimes of WoW.
Thanks in advance for any constructive responses, and hopefully I'll be sticking around, in my short time here, I've already noticed the vast majority of the player base has an intellectual age above 12 (WoW again) and the game itself seems like it could hold my attention for quite a long time.
Cheers

They are installing large upgrades today and have been for the past 18 hours or so. This is the reason for the long downtime. If you will check the News, it even says this.
Usually the game is up 23/7 with only an hour a day for rebooting and minor tweaks.

The server is under going a major hardware upgrade. Normally there arent many server problems. There have been compications with the installation of the new hardware that is causing the delay of server going back up. Im trying to get some info on the new estimated time will be.

Really, really, really bad timing. Server is usually pretty good, it's just upgrade/patch time that gets "exciting." ---

Edited by: Captain Napalm on 12/05/2006 05:49:18 Chill out, unlike WoW and SWG, this is CCP investing back into it's own servers.
And I for one, welcome our new DB uberlords!

You came at a really bad time. Even on patch days the server is usually only down for a few hours. This is a massive hardware upgrade, which will benefit EVE for a long time, so it stands to reason that this would take a while.

I don't know what normally is, but 2 server-crashes within the last week doesn't bode well. ETA for the finish of server upgrades?

If I recall, one of those "outages" wasn't even the server, but a connection issue with it, which would be completely out of CCP's hands. You don't drop and get back ten seconds later with the server back up.

Since eve is a single shard, Huge downtimes cannot be a regular thing (extended ones for loooong periods of time). The servers do go down once a day, but thats it, baring upgrades that happen infrequently. _____________________________________ Stressed out with empire politics?

Glad to hear it, and thanks a ton for the quick responses, from a forum mod as well!
I'll sit back and be patient (nothing I'm usually known for, but I'll give it a whirl )
Hopefully I'll be sticking around for quite a while, and thanks again!
Cheers

I hear about people waiting to log into WoW and I just get stunned everytime I read about this.
If I had to wait to log into a game during normal everyday use, I'd have quit long ago...
trust us..This is a nice reliable game, and with CCP doing 2 major upgrades in a few months time, is great.
We'll have a few days of tweaking no doubt, then the servers will run nice and smooth...

Some systems in eve have been lagging when 25000 people are online at the same time, and hopefully this upgrade will fix things.
We dont know why CCP choose to do this server upgrade during E3. Like you, i bet many want to try the game after seeing eve on the show.

It's best to think about the current issues along the lines of when you first upgraded to Win95 (if you're old enough to remember).
Chances are when you did that, it was a long, painful procedure. The same sort of quantum leap is going on now, only on the hardware side, instead of software.
But when things are all done it'll be like moving from DOS 6 to 2000. You'll never understand how you managed under the old system.
Unfortunately, the time between impelementation and happiness will likely see a major investment in alcoholic substances.
