mining, ratting, mission running, complex farming, playing the T-2 lotto, working the markets, skimming off of the corps taxes and income, running scam Escro sales to nail the person who is playing after 2am their time with a couple of beers in them, and even the odd GTC sale.
After all between people like me counterscaming, anti Pirate teams, and the fact that its actualy more profitable to not be a pirate than to be one, (take missions for example. unlike being a Pirate you always know that someone with nice drops is going to be their and that they will not have a full rack of stabs to run away with while they warp out because they are perfectly aligned.) I suspect most pirates spend a lot more time than they like to admit being in game NOT being a pirate.

oh and also unlike being a pirate, missions pay you to kill or do whatever it is that your doing in a mission run.

Its much like mining or any other isk making task in eve, just not as boring, I log on and plan out how I'm going to make my 30 million a day target through killing people. Yesterday was a bad day for me, got blown up and podded but it was a laugh the day befor that I made 80 million isk. We was 3 people camping a gate so about 240 mill total between us, today i made 95 million, infact its easy ___________________________________________________ I want your stuff |

I rat in 0.0 to get iskies. Anytime I'm just poking about, I will often "casually" rat. Sometimes I run a mission or two, but not to make isks but to just improve my standing or play around. Missions usually follow immediately after a 0.0 rat fest to make a lot of isks. Becuase not only are the bounties high in 0.0, the amount of sec gain is higher too. Some pirates leave 0.0 ratting sessions with high positive sec standings; that and you also don't take a sec hit killing someone in 0.0.
Very rich pirates might have their own POS moon mining operations that generate a great deal of isks for them. For those who primarily rat for a living like me, pay days are often the result of a good faction spawn.
Also, pirates lose ships too. If those ships were bought relatively cheap, then the insurance payout will be a nice cash infusion when that time comes. Sorta think of it like a savings account that you can't pull out of, all the while, you still "manage" then bam!! However, this doesn't work at all for T2 ships and faction ships. Ask your local pirate how much the insurance return is for his Wolf, Retribution or some other T2 ship, then look on the market and get an idea of what he had to pay to own it. If he loses an T2 Assault Frigate, it can easily be a much bigger total loss than if he lost a Battle Cruiser.
And, then, you have the loot. I honestly don't make much money off the loot. If T2 falls, sure I'll grab it, but I'm T2 myself so to me, economically, it's "just another everyday module". Once in a while, someone fits a very expensive T1 module (Internal Force Field Array Damage Control), or a Faction module like True Sansha Energized Adaptive Nanomembrane; these can be sold for substantial profit but again, they don't drop that often.

That's a good aspect of how a pirate should make side money. So if you havn't already, get them trade skills up a bit!

Usually decent pirates end up with so much isk and therefore so many battleships that they got no idea how many they have or even where some of them are.
