I dont really understand missle lancher, which is a shame since my character is based on using them. Do thay have an optimal range, like turrents? Are their RoF readings how long it takes to fire one missile?
Also, with the missile lancher upgrades, they seem to have negative damage modifiers and increased RoF times. Am I reading everything wrong?

There are no range modifiers for missiles, Missiles have a maximum range they can hit to, and that is it.

Missiles do not have an optimum range or falloff. Either the target is in range or they are not.
Missiles must fly to their target and dont instantly hit, this can make the range factor fun if the targets flying towards or away from you. Effectivly inreasing or decreasing the range at which you should fire.
The ROF is how long it takes to fire each missile. Note it may take betwen 0 and 30+ secounds for the missile to hit their target.
Missiles always hit if the targets "in range" but damage may be reduced based on the size.
A missiles range is its flight time * its flight speed.
Different missile launchers fire different missiles. Rocket launchers fire rockets.. Standards and assult fire lights, heavies fire heavies, cruise fire cruise and seige fire torps. :)
Think of lights/heavies/cruise as small/medium/large turrets. They are effective against the same classes.. Frigates, Cruisers, and Battleships.

By the way, all tests I have made shooting stationary targets show that your missiles will not hit targets at maximum range (missile velocity * flight time).. I seem to need to be about 2k closer to the target in order to hit it (both my ship and target are stationary).

The missiles take some time to accelerate, though this is never realy an issue as you shouldnt be sitting still in a real fight. :)
