I've recently moved from lvl4s to 0.0 ratting as far as my PvE is concerned. I've found a nice little -.95 sec system with 14 belts that I've only seen maybe one or two other players ratting in since I've been in the area ever.
Anyway.. I've gotten special spawns in surrounding systems, but I decided to concentrate on this one for ratting since it is A: really low sec (for the area) and B: has a good number of belts.
I have never gotten any special spawns here. Not even a hauler spawn. I've spent a good 4-8 hours a day just doing belt to belt to belt killing off the loser spawns, chaining the juicy multi BS ones, hauling the loot from a secure can back to a station.. rinse repeat. I've been doing this for two weeks (fleet ops permitting)
I was curious if there is any rhyme or reason for why special spawns show up or don't? I would think this system would be close to ideal:
1. Its fairly deep in 0.0 2. Its a low sec 0.0 3. It has lots of belts 4. Those belts are split up between 5 planets (not sure if it matters but who the heck knows) 5. There are no ice belts or other 'interesting' objects that they may spawn around instead besides the gates and belts
Am I just really this unlucky? I've gottan a special and a hauler spawn in a -.65 in the same area, shouldn't the sec rating increase the chances of getting something other then slightly larger BS spawns?
just curious if anyone has any insight.

You state you are chaining spawns...
Each chained spawn is one less chance for a special spawn since it is already determined...
If you want BS bounties and loot, chain the spawns.
If you want special spawns, don't chain or only chain the very best BS spawns.
Granted, you could still go weeks without seeing a special spawn. They really are rare.

I clean everything out when I rat and I've never gone more than a night without something - hauler or otherwise. Sometimes 2-3 dreads a night in a 6 hour session.
Also, moving to different systems seems to help (not sure if its in the same constellation or what). -------------------------------------------- "A plan is just a list of things that don't happen." -- Parker, _The Way of the Gun_

that makes sense. I generally only chain spawns of 3 1mil+ ISK BSs. But I see your point that it is just yet another missed chance.
Money isn't the issue, so thats not a big deal to clear them too. (I was just keeping something alive so as not to be really bored...)
I know people in my corp have gotten multiple specials in the same ratting outing, I just seem to have no luck at it and I was hoping there was something I could do to increase my chances.
I'll clear all the spawns regardless now, are there any other variables that seem to matter?
I'll have to check into a clinic in a few more weeks I think if I just keep seeing the same cruiser/BC/BS spawns over and over and over and over.... granted I'll have enough ISK to pay for a nice one :)

Not true, I think--I've seen officer spawns come in during a chain. I'm pretty sure they're totally random.

Just keep at it killing everything and you'll eventualy get something. (Faction or Hauler anyway) 0.0 space needs to have the soverignty of the NPC pirates your hunting to get an officer spawn.

AH! I think that is the point I was missing for Officer Spawns since I've never seen one, though I've gotten faction and hauler spawns in and about the area.
many thanks!

This is simply not true, they can spawn no matter who got sovereignity.

Your unlucky? Ive been in these 3 connected 0.0 systems for a week or longer. Ive seen one Dark Blood finatic which had 1 50-75 mil item and 1 30 mil item. Since then ive seen nothing. ON TOP OF THAT i have NEVER seen a BS spawn OR a hauler spawn....grrr.... Ive wanted to fight a bs for so long but all i get is 4 frigates or 4 mallers or 4 battlecruiser so on and so forth. nothing interesting.
any ideas why im not getting any bs or hauler spawns?

Edited by: prathe on 14/05/2006 03:33:40 alot of people have tried to figure out what causes them to spawn most frequently .
from my experience the following leads to officer spawn most frequently :
sec status is somewhat irrelevant most likely it adds maybe a small percentage chance increase of an officer spawn
what i do is i pick a system with more than ten belts and i use the fastest setup to destroy the rats in qwestion . i go belt to belt destroying everything as quickly as i can . i usually have an alt looter 1 belt behind in an blockade runner scooping everything ( tractor beams gotta ♥ 'em ) . the reason this seems to work for me is , as every spawn destroyed must be replaced with another they randomly appear in new belts as you destroy them . i guess that evry time something new spawns there is a " roll of the dice " to determine what it will be , by causing the spawns to re-emerge as quickly as possible you increase your chances of hitting the officer spawn sooner . this is my best guess as to how the officer system works and how to push for higher frequency .
however the system is random so thats all i can figure to hit most often
also try to rat privately ' cause there nothing worse than working a system for 3+ hours and then seeing some one in local go " woot just killed a domination spawn "
best of luck
oh and sovereignty is NOT a FACTOR : FACT i have hit domination spawns in low sec empire MANY times and looted many implant off them and faction items

I wasnt talking about Faction spawns, I was talking about Officers like Estamel, Chelm and Tobias. They ONLY spawn in pirate soverign systems, period.

You're wrong hun. I've gotten Officer spawns in Tenerifis, which isnt even remotely Sovereign Angel space. Ofcourse, him being an Angel's Officer, he didnt actually drop any Officer or Domination items bar ammo, but thats another point.

No you ARE wrong, I know people who have killed Serp officer in a -1 system without any sover in it. Yes officer, not commander.
edit; infact, i know he gets killed now and then in 'worse' sec systems aswell. ___________________________ Brutors Rule! My Eve-vids; Click. |

Officers spawn anywhere in 0.0, not just sovereign systems.
They are seen lots in sovereign systems by comparison, since those systems tend to be busy due to having npc stations near, and because sovereign systems seem to get a bonus to their negative security rating as far as rat spawns go.
Personally, I;ve twice killed an officer in non-sovereign space. Once in Tenal, once in non-sovereign Delve.
I've also killed one each in sovereign space in Fountain, Delve and Venal.
All in all it seems system security status is the influence, and that sovereign systems get a downward boost (of say -0.5 or something, or a percentage maybe) to their security status resulting in spawns along the lines of a true -1.0 system in systems as high as -0.5 that are pirate sovereign space.

Is it a true 0.0 system? The "named" 0.0s (ie. Egbinger) aren't really 0.0, but rather +0.0x and get rounded off to 0.0. They still have sentries at gates and stations, and you still take sec hits for aggressive actions there. The NPCs found there are also not true 0.0 spawns, and thus you won't see BS and better battleships there. Try finding a true 0.0 system (with a name such as HED-GP, though I wouldn't recommend that one) and ratting there if you want BS spawns. ------------------------------------------------ I buy/sell any and all faction ships. Naw man, that's rubbish. He's trying to keep you out of HED-GP because he wants it for himself. I personally have seen 2 Chelm's spawns there. _____________ The day I receive my first moderator forum-sig hijack is the day I realise I have won Eve.

Chaining? Its where 1 or multiple Battleships spawns appear and u keep killing them, BUT: u dont kill all the support. Means the entire group will come back eventually.

Lots of posts, but I'll throw in my two cents. I have been ratting in "empire" 0.0 in the Syndicate and I see battleship spawns quite often and my spawn a couple weeks ago was in fact a commander spawn. It dropped nothing special but faction ammo, but I was still excited to see a Shadow Serpentis. It was a first for me. I have never seen dread or hauler spawns so that may be a different matter.

well i got a hauler spawn in said system two nights ago (not been on since then.) So I guess it comes down to my luck just sucks.
Even for a hauler spawn it sucked, all almost all trit. Wasn't worth the time to haul.
Buuuuut.. it does show that the system isn't broken :)
thanks for the info one and all. Now.. I just need to find a luck skill book somewhere...
