Right. I'm not happy with the sound of my creative something something usb-stick mp3 player, so I'm getting a new one. Now I want something with great sound quality. Only other one I've tried is the Zen Vision M (is that the name? the creative one with video function). Now the sound there is pretty good, even better with a decent headset. anyone know how the other leading market leaders (doesn't have to have video, it's a plus though) compares to that one? -------------------------------------

Every test I've seen has rated Creative Zen Vision:M's sound quality higher than Ipod 5. gen (video). plus the fact that the Zen has radio and a microphone. and it supports .wma, which I have a lot of -------------------------------------

ipod, x5, archos, or irviver h3x0, with Rockbox firmware.
mp3/aac/mpc/ogg/flac/wavpack/ac3/apple lossless and probably a few other audio formats im forgetting now, gapless playback, themes, replaygain, customizable crossfeed, parametric equalizer... wma is unfortunately not implemeted yet - lack of a mature oss integer decoder.
currently i run it on my ipod - it rules :) ----------------

I'm actually getting pretty decent results off my phone. It's a Sony Ericsson K750i with a 1Gb MemoryStick Duo in it. I've not noticed anything that's not been down to mp3 compression (save for loud volume stuff which is rarely good on a portable player). ______________________

I'm on my second ipod 40gb right now. The performance is good, the sound quality is very satisfactory.
One thing that will put me off buying an ipod again is that it is extremely fragile.

The iPod Video is a fine bit of kit, but the stuff about the battery is true, it lasts about half as long as my old Sony (which went through the washing machine conveniently as Sony discontinued that model )

Btw, you might wanna try a few different audio formats while youre at it... for me, musepack(mpc) was transparent @ standard which gives 160-192kbps depending on the track.. for mp3 and ogg i need about 225kbps, and for nero aac i need 190-210kbps. i need to test the latest nero aac encoder, but for now i encode in mpc.
fb2k has an abx plugin so its pretty straightforward. ----------------

Ipods always tend to be good, but I have heard some rave reviews on the IRiver. If you want the best sound possible I would recommend getting some good headphones and a headphone amp for your player, and using a lossless format or at least VBR (variable bit rate) on your MP3s.
Headphones - Grado Headphones are awesome, I currently use SR325s (run around 300 bucks for a pair, but well worth it). Senheisers are also supposed to be quite good, just not my personal preference.

I'm thinking of getting an iPod simply because the iTrip looks like the best player->car stereo radio transmitter. Been looking for a good transmitter to go with the Archos Gmini XS202, which imho is the highest quality player on the market, and would be my first choice.

iRiver players come automatically formated to play wma's without having to convert them to MP3. I have a 512mb flash one that works great, but have seen them up to 2gig flash drives.
Also, if you have a PSP, the new software upgrades available for free download have added WMP to it, so wma's are now compatible through PSP. Buy some memory chips cheap, put music on them and voila. I have 30gigs of music all in wma format because I like the reduced file size and quality.

If you're in need of a new phone as well I can strongly recommend the Nokia N91, I've had mine for a few weeks now and I couldn't have made a better choice. 4 GB of room for your favourite music is all you need IMO.
Besides, 1 machine with all you need > having lots of crap that you can loose :P

I used to have a rio carbon and some 10 dollar headphones from cvs.. and really it broke.. and they kept breaking so..I updated..
I got this
IAduio X5L (30gb)
and these
Sexy Sony Earphones
Anyway ive had em about a month i guess..
The mp3 player is perfect cept for the button .. its a little small and it has to "break" in... Also.. if you drop it.. the way the boutton is.. its really really hard to scratch the lovely screen.. ontop of that its a preety durable thing.. doesn't scratch easy.. only got a few rough marks in it from dropping it on concrete... this thing doesn't fall apart either.. Yet.. it has so many options its insane, it can make 96kbps mp3s sound lovely. and supports all kinds of stuff.
And the earphones are the best ive ever had. they have an insane bass, you get used to it after a bit though. Their very durable.. I accdentally stood on them outside of a store once.. for about 20 seconds, and im about 140lbs. And they were fine. They also block out all the noise from everything else.. its a weird feeling but lovely. If your in a car with the windows open and the radio going.. you can hear the radio clearer with them on.. (Well as long as your not playing something) if you have a song playing its basicaly impossible to hear anything else inless its 10 times louder..
Anyway.. I recomend these products... they are freaking awsome. the mp3 player even has a windows interface so its basicaly a 30 gb drag and drop hard drive. even has a radio for when your really bored. has preety decent reception.. bout the same as a car.

Well, fortunately, a friend of mine appeared today, with one of those in his hand. While the sound was OK, I find that the sound in the Zen Vision is superior. Of course, this testing I've done is with standard earplugs. Also, it doesn't have enough of a gadget factor for me. I'm superficial ( ) which is why I think I'd like to have an IPod. Also because one of my best friends has the Zen Vision, and another one has the IAudio..I want to be unique..
Think I'll like the Ipod? -------------------------------------

Creative actually pioneered the portable .mp3 player, so by rights, they should be the best.
Of course, I have an irrational hatred of any Apple products, so my opinion may be a touch biased.
I just object to people thinking they're better, just 'cos they put it in a white chassis, and have flashy adverts
That, and they tend to be VERY overpriced for what you get. Compare a Creative .mp3 player, and the Apple equivelent for price! Oh, and Creative's can play .WMA format too While it is divine to soar like and eagle, weasels don't get sucked into jet engines |

ordered a 5th gen iPod. but, this is from the Rockbox site: "Battery life is significantly less than the Apple firmware"
That's not good. iPod already has worse battery life than the Zen -------------------------------------

Mp3 players have been around long before the ipod was invented. The Ipod was just marketed extremely well so now everyone has one after seeing bono jumping around on TV adverts every 5 minutes. They by no means the best out there, iriver and Mpman make some great players.
