Hello there.
It's been quite a while since I've been around. Out of pod experiences being what they are, I'm quite lucky to be around at all. But there's something very different.. and quite comfortable and this EVE of ours. It's been a long time.. my subconscious has been able to process a bit of what I've endured.. And so three days ago I hop back into the pit and fly out into the stars once again.
Perhaps I'm getting ahead of myself.
I'm Whispey, if you've never met me. At the bottom of this lament I have links to my former occupation.. that of the... untraditional antics of a well meaning pirate.
Anyways.. I log back on to find I'm at the same place I left.. a little system called Orvolle next to 0.0 space. I moved there before my hiatus because I thought I'd seen and done enough to be ready for a life on the high seas of the universe.. a place with no security.
That turned out NOT to be the case.
With a combination of kind donations from frequenters of this forum, my few corpmates, and my own earnings, I spent every dime I had to buy the biggest and meanest of all carrion birds, the Raven. However, and quite sadly, I was very poor after that, and not too high up in the skillpoints, if you know what I mean.. so I outfitted the mighty birdie with the bane of all players everywhere.. the Standard Heavy Missile Launcher(s). That's right folks.. tech 1 goodness, just like momma used to make.
I've got a million dollars worth of parts on a one hundred million dollar ship. At the time it didn't seem like a bad idea.
I was in 0.0 space (I timed it through the log) an astounding 3.3 minutes (that's 530 seconds) before I was locked, killed and podded. I'm not going to regale you with tales of the glorious way in which I confounded my enemy.. the epic tricks and strategems I employed to tie up entire armadas while unleashing torrents of standard missile heck. Why? Why won't the bard Whispey tell you these things?
Because they did not happen. I made it to the first belt, where I was followed by no less than thirty ships (no exaggeration this time), and blown up without targeting a single person.
I took it stoicly, this defeat. I handled it very rationally.
I logged off. I cancelled my subscription. I uninstalled. I went outside and sprained my ankle playing Frisbee.
That was over six months ago.
However, Wednesday of this week I decided I would try it again. I girded myself mentally for the challenges to come. War, I told myself, has casualties. I had killed before, and in this wild zoo of 0.0-ness I was no longer a predator.. I was a scared little baby seal waiting for the end-all-be-all wrecking ball of clubbing to come and make me some fat woman's handbag. (Do they have baby seal handbags?)
I waited three whole days to go back into 0.0. The same system. No battleship this time, only a trusty cruiser. Quicker, I says, is better than bigger and noticeable. A couple of friends go with me.. we're all in cruisers.
My heart is racing as we enter the place that claimed my dream ship. I can not back down, I tell myself. I have to keep moving forward.
We take the rats down in one belt.. then two.. then three. Things are going great. In the little montage in my head I'm jumping high with both arms outstretched.
Someone should have told me about tech II weaponry.
Some guy warps into our belt. It looks like a Thorax. It's not. Those look like drones. They're more like small suns.
I'm dead in an instant. My corpmates flee in terror. My grapefruit gets away.. I bounce from planet to planet.. hiding.
So, whenever they let me out of the system (I had to log, the gates are all camped now), I'm going back to Concord. I'm going to see if Bubba has his guns tuned up hot. I'll see if they're hiring at Quafe.
Then I'm going to train and sharpen my little missile laden fangs.
And then, I'll be back for that system. Even if it kills me.
Er, you know what I mean.
