I have a friend that would like to start playing EVE but only has a dial-up connection. Already tried to convince him to just get cable or DSL at least.
Anyways my questions are:
Does anyone here play with dial-up? Is it even possible? And if it is, does it do the job well enough?
Thanks!

56k I take it? Then yea, it should work just fine. Might take a while to login, but once he gets in the game, it should function pretty smooth. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Cascade للللللللiss NAVY |

I don't play with dial up, but it is possible. I've noticed eve is very light on data transfer through my net connection.. I don't even NOTICE it.. I mean winamp streaming music and Ventrilo runnign I can see the data moveing, but Eve.. not even noticeable.
Now.. that said.. it depends on the dial up line. I honestly haven't used dial up since before 2000, so i don't know how it is today, but I expect that if it's a normal dialup it'll be about 2kb/s up and 4.8 kb/s down.. So it SHOULD be ok.
All they can do is try. Send your friend a buddy link.. Though PLEASE be nice and download the client onto a CD for him/her...downloading half a gig on dialup is horrible..

I have tried playing eve a couple of times on dialup and it works fine. It takes longer loading the contents of your hangar etc, but its not a problem at all.
Paying per minute is not a good idea for eve addicts though. --- The Eve Wiki Project |

EVE works fine on dialup, just don't expect to be in a PVP corp that requires you to use Teamspeak or Ventrillo, cause it isn't going to work. ----------------------------- EVE Addict |

I used to, and I had less problems in eve than with other games. This was some time ago though __________________________ Indulge Me |

It's fine, just don't PvP and hope to win, or use the market and hope to buy anything within a week, or open escrow, or enter jita, or rens, or click on anyone's portrait, or use teamspeak/ventrilo, or juggle bookmarks, or move lots of items, or repackage lots of items, or log in without having 15mins to wait.
lol ok it's not impossible, but while most things are doable, they won't be doable in the time CCP estimated for the average user, so get your friend in Eve, but teach them patience and give them a link to a dsl company ___________ ~Fredbob~

Yep, I play on dialup quite a bit because my GF lives out in the sticks and the cable company refuse to provide cable/DSL there.
As far as MMOGs go, EVE is pretty stable. The only time you get noticable problems is interceptor vs interceptor fighting.
I can't use Teamspeak anyway so thats not a problem for me.

Garrick, I've played dial-up for over 2 years. Unless you're going into heavy battle(lvl 2 missions or above), PvP, or Jita, it's really not that bad. I mine a lot, and do some low-level missions, and we sometimes do frigate-fests in my corp...I've never noticed enough lag to matter in a low-population system. Jita...now that's another story!! Get your freind into Eve, let them get excited about it, and show them the benefits of a cable/DSN connection...it'll sell itself!

It is very possible. I run on 28.8k dial-up in the United States and I have no problems with regular eve things. I can pvp and notice no real lag.
The only real problems appear is when you try to use a TS channel with a high codec on.
The only limitations I have when it comes to TeamSpeak is that I can't talk as much so people can understand me.

When I first started living Eve a few years ago I was on 12k4 dialup (ikky poo phone line) and I cant recall any issues but I was never in any large engagements. |

Just got ADSL, used 56k dialup before that.
Notes: Use market in searchmode, takes long to update when on dialup. Jumps, undocks and such is a bit delayed but not by much. Turn off effects. Login is a bit slow. Make sure you don't download portraits all the time.
Had no problems with fleet ops. Sometimes I had less lag than the "cable-guys".
Gl, it works just fine on dial-up. Used it from Beta til end of last February.

Very playable, though massive gatecamps and fetching lots of data for say, scanners or escrow might be a pain. Not long ago I was playing via 2-way satellite (1000ms ping just about well enough.

dial up.... Yeah I use it. No problem with the game itself...dont enjoy BIG PvP battles... Hangers take a sec or two... Vent and TS dont like dial up...
And the kicker is the 4-25 hour downloads that are free but mandatory expansions from ccp.
Other then that, sure dial up is good...
