Edited by: Raem Civrie on 15/05/2006 01:15:39 Nothing much else to say. Was rummaging around my hard drive, trying to throw out junk I don't need anymore and ran across a small cachT of screenshots I was sure I had lost ages ago. So in honour of EVE's recent third birfday, I decided it would only be fair to share these little anacronistic gems.
From Alpha (probably #6)
From Beta (early)
Edit: My memory being what it is, I'm not entirely sure if they're not both from either alpha or early beta. The interface at least looks a bit similar. I'm pretty damn sure Enelaise was never in beta though. Or was it? OH GOD MY HEAD. ----

The titans that you can fly right now (as in, the player buildable ones) didn't exist, I believe, but there was a Gallente one (was used in storyline event a while ago, and is different from the player buildable ones now.)
If that makes sense.

they did
the theres a gallente one in the top picture, its the big blue thing ;p called the solteur. and there was one for the amarr too (very very close to whats ingame now ;p) and the caldari one i never saw an "ingame picture" outside of ad pictures so i dunno if it was actually ever "in".
But yeah like the guy above says, they're completely different from the ones that are available now.
edit: not that the old ones were available in beta :| ------------------------------------------------ NEWLY ADDED ON 1/19 (though applies to all posts before ;p)

Really nice pictures. I too like the alpha font. I remember when I first played EVE I was blown away by just how smooth the interface and game was. It was just...slick. Even in alpha. Can't wait to see the new graphics and Kali

I also recall a Minmatar Titan called the Leviathan, which is the same name as the Caldari Titan. Or, at least I think I did. ___________________

My mind is a blur between EVE and Earth and Beyond, I played both in beta, but didnt pick up EVE until more recently. I do remember ore stealing (the guy got soooo mad), and going into 0.0, only to get owned by NPC pirates, and the lack or a real auto pilot.

I tried a trial awhile back but didnt like it, I wish I'd had the patience to keep an account going then and have all the SP now. _______________________________________________

Kinda odd that the interface in Alpha had MORE style than it currently does now. I'm all for utilitarian, but everyone has to admit, the current interface is just plain bland, and contributes nothing to the game.
btw, what are those things in the high slots in this picture, Smartbombs?

I wish I'd been there in Alpha and Beta...I know, I know, everything was so hard and difficult, wah wah wah, but I would have loved to get in on EVE when it was still tiny...it would have given me a better gut-level appreciation for how huge it is now (and I don't just mean in terms of solar systems, I'm talking more in terms of overall content). -------- Tom Thumb > for a nut case you rawk [04:21:15] Mebrithiel Ju'wien > Nik's bio 4tw btw [07:38:53] Graelyn > Nikolai for Dev 108!

Unfortunately, that old UI was very difficult to work with.

If I recall correctly, thats the old laser with a standard crystal (the only one around at the time) fitted icon, Small Gatling Laser on that Bantam - which was the starter ship for the Civire bloodline at the time.

I always liked the way they did the radar, but it just didn't work well enough to keep it on the screen. Would be nice to see it implemented in a useful way, seeing as they already have the artwork and code for it.

Titans have always existed afaik, they just wern't developed as pilotable ships, whereas the Battlecruisers were created for Shiva. ___________________________

I remember when certain sounds weren't in-game yet, and instead played a placeholder. That placeholder just happened to be a cow complaining over something.
The bug you describe resurfaced in a later retail build, where exiting a station said pants-****ting "boom" would sound (how many experienced death and podding before screen updates back in the early retail? Anyone? Yeah. That sound bug was really uncomfortable). I heard from one dev that this bug got fixed quickly after an in-company e-mail was sent out threatening violence.
Originally by: Project Griffin ...equintaz?
Old alpha/beta player that left before retail and was the one that mailed me these screenshots... a long time ago (the timestamp on the zip file says july 2002). The beta screenshot (Hiriitsu Kaneda) is mine though. And the pink interface. I still use that interface colour on my second account.
Originally by: Lorette When i first saw the alpha pic i was like why isnt EVE as good looking as that hehe. I guess the real one is more accessable though
Now remember, this was almost FIVE YEARS AGO. I distinctly remember downloading the alpha client in june/july 2001 (I was at work while it downloaded, and snuck out two hours early to find out that the server wasn't running). This visual quality is still in-game, along with style. Just go to "options" and tick off "interlace" and "widescreen" in Graphics. Or at least widescreen, I get the feeling that they removed Interlace. ----

For the longest time they were just battleships with a 8/8/8 slot configuration and alot of armour/shield. CCP wanted to do something special with them, so they didn't release titans until now in RMR, where they had new modules, weapons and the general framework from other capital ships set in place.
Originally by: Tharrn What was the avatar thingy in the upper right corner good for?
Reminding you who you were. Clicking it displayed some information about your character, I think. It was replaced by the left-hand Neocom in later builds. ----
