I would just like to make the following statement û
I was saddened to return from my 4 day vacation to find my pos that was used as an npc base for not only myself but my corp mates had been off lined and stolen along with 6 t2 battleships, a large number of barges and haulers some t2, skill books and t2 mods, whatever wasnÆt taken or scooped to haulers was blown up. Large ship arrays, Ammo arrays, you name it, it was destroyed.
Everything that I have worked for over the past 3 years has been taken in one vicious attack from someone that was given the trust and freedom of my pos.
Most people that know me hopefully will say that I always give freely to help others out, and do what I can to assist. I know maybe I should have known better, and trust few people, so maybe I should have listened to those who whispered in my ear!!
This isnÆt a feel sorry for Bayroo thread, but I just want people to be watchful of the following people û
RUTOO SOCIETIES PUNISHMENT
RutooÆs statement to a fellow corp m8 was û I am leaving anyway, so I may as well take what I can.

Sorry, but security is like secrets.
If only one person knows the secret, it's secret. If everybody knows, it's not a secret.
If only one person has acess to everything, it's secure. if everyone has access, it's not secure.

If you aren't ready for such losses, you shouldn't play.

Would that be the same Rutoo who ratted out the STC freighter convoy some months back? Tough break Bayroo. I imagine that the 'Rutoo' character will end up being recycled, but if it isn't and I ever see it in low-sec space, I'll be sure to gun him down in the manner he so richly deserves.

Sweet a Thread About me.
For the record, Rutoo, did not have the starbase config role. Therefor disclaiming all blame agasint me would be wrong. But I will Admit to being involved, though my part was mininal.
And since i didn't have starbase config role, you have to wonder who 1) edjected all the ships 2) offlined the POS, 3) unachored the POS.
Sooo yea,

Yeah... always smacktards looking to steal your stuff. Personally, even if my corp does get bigger in the future I'm planning on not giving access to really valuable stuff to basically no one but 1) people I know in real life... which basically means my brothers , 2) long-time members that have proven their trustworthiness, and even then probably not 100% access.
It's quite sad that anyone can steal and then vanish into thin air with no repercussions (especially if not using their main to do so).

Nice spin, but I think you are getting dizzy.
I take the time it requires for Eve to bear fruit with my plans seriously, I could be getting overtime at my job rather than playing Eve. So the opportunity cost is much more than a mere subscription.
I love Eve, I know the risks of dealing with people who want lots for very little effort. I accept them and do what I do anyway, while minizing the damage someone can do from within. There will be lazy alts who join up, I know this. And some of them may try to steal from us, I know this also. But none of them will be able to steal anything significant without monthes of effort and time invested...and even then they couldn't steal much.
So my solution is to make it not worth it for a corp thief to bother, rather than root them out or try to catch them after the fact.

I dont know many thieves that can or would reprocess themselves after they steal 2 billion of stuff.
Thats my sticking point with corp theft. A noobish person works hard for a couple months, gets permissions, and boom buh bye everything my corp and I have worked for, and our only recourse,,,none.
In real life, the repercussions for this kind of theft stays with you for life, or if your stupid enough and steal from the wrong kind of people, it gets you in concrete boots at the bottom of a muddy river.

Question, but why the hell did you keep stuff at a POS?
Hell I keep anything of value locked up tightly in an NIC station, where nobody other than myself can touch it, ever, short of breaking into my account.
Also.. tell me about these 't2 battleships'. I'm assuming you mean normal T1s with T2 mods, or were they faction too?

As various people have said, There are tools to stop this. Rutoo has already said that he didn't take down the POS because he didn't have the Roles to do so.
How about taking a look at people with the role before blaming the nearest guy?
Also:

At some of the people who have said that how you behave in EvE is how you behave in real life.
Thats simply not true, MMORPG Chars function as alter egos.

I agree there are things in place to stop this happening but to say this is just a game shows how little you know, yes: virtual ships, modules and money, but eve is all about player interaction so its real friendships and real trust that is broken when something like this happens if you can't see that you are an idiot, or maybe you dont care. Either way to kick someone when they are down is despicable, that is real and you are a bad/stupid person in rl for it.

Hmm... wouldn't that also count for when you pod someone?
Sure it's not nice, but in the end EVE is nothing more than a game. It mustn't be more. I'd never do something like that and I sure as hell would be annoyed if it happens to me, but in the end you have to look at it and say "Okay, what's done is done. I've to play on with knowing that or I have to quit if that killed all the fun the game could give me." He sure as hell wouldn't get a party invitation any more but well in the end he did nothing you shouldn't be able to live with. It's simply not worth to let your life get ruined by things someone else did to you.

Don't get me wrong. It surely is very mean of that person to clean someone out, but you can't just stop and lament about it. As I surely sad it is bad and I guess they won't be friends IRL yet it happens and you have to live with it. Just be happy that only virtual damage was done. There are a lot of people out there in the real world acting as cowardly but doing real damage to other people.

Trusting someone with 6 t2 battleships is almost asking for it isn't it? Not to be rude I wouldn't never do this to someone but seems almost like it's your own fault. ---------------------------------------------

How do you steal a corp?
Seriously though, a theft shouldn't always be completed solo, and therefore it's not valid to suggest the perpetrator is bad at his job for doing so. A group POS theft is quite a lot of fun...

Care to clarify the situation a bit, if you've found out more? Especially considering Rutoo's claim of not having enough roles (==trust) for this.
That is, did he seriously betray the trust he had accepted?
Hopefully there are many who detest such behaviour, and will take it up to the pilot and the corp/alliance (SMASH) condoning such behaviour, should the chance come.

Well, for those not already keen with the "criminal mastermind":
Rutoo, Societies Punishment and KnightCrawler are pretty much the same person working together with Bloodspoon.
GL to your next corpmates I guess.
Trick is simple, nice guy, wants to pvp, has no isk etc.

When time has come to leave, you asked other persons to help you even if bayroo let you all used it. Even if its a game, all what i can say you got low values to exploit someone like bayroo. 2) at least 30 of my tech II drones went missing alot with a couple of tech II ships in that pos

well if you couldn't afford it, then all you had to do is to make a nice safespot and use that instead of POS. Did ever crossed your mind that someone else (POS owner) is paying a lot more isk for fueling? Do not try to justify your lazyness, or your low skills, about how to earn money in 0.0 Being a beggar (asking not to pay 9 mils), or thief, is a way of life (in eve), I dont have a problem with that, after all it is your choice-enjoy. About smash alliance who helped you, I got nothing against them, they did their job real fast real good, grats to them.

I find it comical that people use "it's just a game" as an excuse to lose all morality. As if they are diferent people in RL than they are in game. when in reality, people act out in game what they wish they could in RL, it's basic psychology, and anyone who would try to disagree with me on that... study basic psychology and then get back to me.
What was done is a good tactic sure, but don't try to fool others by saying it's just a game and does not reflect your personal character. You don't use two diferent brains to make diferent decisions in game and in RL. Consequences and Rewards is what drives people's decision.
To Bayroo, I hope you can get your self back up and running and this time better than the last... just do your self a favor and don't trust anyone with expensive corp property.

To suggest that morality is the only thing stopping the majority of people in this game from being killers in real life seems flawed as an arguement. I'd have thought 'basic psychology' would also back up that a civilised society can identify the difference between a game and RL. Do none of the people here toeing the line similar to Jubei Zon play games like counterstrike? Does the morality you speak of not apply to that game?

Im guessing a POS with x6 tec2 BSs comes to over 1 billion, that equates to ú100 in RL currency (about $150). Even in a vertual world everything has its value. I buy time cards and Bayroo could probably have paid for a years worth a subcription with what you stole off him.

First of all, 1) I wasn't gonna pay that much to use it as a SS, 2) i was ratting for the sec status not for the isk 3) where did i even think i was super rich because of this? you keep saying that yourselfs that i am thinking that which is not true 4) At the time this was pulled off i was sitting at a personal wallet for 1 billion, Right now my wallet still sits at 1 Billion, I didn't do it for the isk i did it becuase it was fun.

How do you justify actors who portray theives or worse? When you play poker, do you intend for everyone to leave with the same amount of money? If you play Risk, does everyone sign a treaty and noone loses?
This game is all about playing a charachter in a fantasy of everyone's making. The content is charachter driven, and this means that there are all types in the game. Expect it and live with it. No matter the hat anyone is playing under they should relish the fact that there is so much possiblity in this game for great friends and horrible betrayal. You can spend your time running an efficent business, brokering trade relationships, or become a pirate. All of these have many options, and everyone has a part to play.
People who try to claim there is a -direct- moral connection between a fantasy persona and who they are IRL are deceiving themselves. They are deceiving themselves into a fantasy world where they belive that if they can take the moral high ground, no matter what happens to them or anyone else in the game they're still "better".
Pure prattle.
Argments against that generally boil down to "It still causes a -real- person hurt and sadness" and/or "you still have wasted -real- time".
#1 - It only causes them real hurt if they choose to let it. Playing a game that includes the option for players to do each other direct harm should mean that you accept this is possible and find it enjoyable. If you don't, perhaps the game isn't for you.
#2 - Time "wasted" implies you get any real world use out of it - by default, entertainment's value can only be measured in what you get out of it. As I said in #1, if you're not entertained by the possiblity you could lose everything in-game and all of the other possiblities out there you shouldn't be playing it in the first place.
Yin and Yang - things would be boring if everyone had to be nice. Those who whine about bad things happening instead of learning from their mistakes are doomed, both here and in the real world.
Now - flame away :)

First of all, 1) I wasn't gonna pay that much to use it as a SS, 2) i was ratting for the sec status not for the isk 3) where did i even think i was super rich because of this? you keep saying that yourselfs that i am thinking that which is not true 4) At the time this was pulled off i was sitting at a personal wallet for 1 billion, Right now my wallet still sits at 1 Billion, I didn't do it for the isk i did it becuase it was fun.
edit: typo
Oh I see.
If you were using it just as an SS, why use it at all? I make my isk in pretty much the same area and I have never even seen Bayroo's POS. Ratting soes not need a POS. As for you doing it for fun, I dont see what fun is involved in backstabbing someone whos been very very helpful to everyone in the corp. You sneaked some guys in stole stuff and destroyed what ou didnt steal, must have be real exciting.

So to recap.
Let's say you work in IBM or wherever. You dont do a Rutoo to them because -you are saying- you are afraid of the consequences.
You "truthfully" like Bay, but oh well **** happens you stole everything the guy owned.
Yes, whoever is naive will believe your "such crap".
Oh... you're still famous. Just don't do a Rutoo to your current corpmates. They helped you remember?
And in EVE you cant die. Worst think that can happen is lose some skillpoints and remain iskless in a camped station forever. So, no one can kill you. Except you ofc.
Enjoy your Rutoo-life!

Im guessing a POS with x6 tec2 BSs comes to over 1 billion, that equates to ú100 in RL currency (about $150). Even in a vertual world everything has its value. I buy time cards and Bayroo could probably have paid for a years worth a subcription with what you stole off him.
At least your trying to justify your actions on moral terms, most corp theives just run and hide.
*cough* - Investing time in this game is equivalent to gambling or going to a sports event you won't enjoy if your team does not win. You get entertainment out of it, monetary and tangible benefits (i.e. getting real world cash or goods) are technically against the EULA, even if that dosen't always work (sale of time cards, etc). Stop trying to equate losses in a game to real-life torts. The only people who like that are the taxman, macro farmers and laywers.
Oh - and what he did was totally 'immoral' in-game. He was, however, playing within the rules of the game - even if he's a grade-a jerk it's still not immoral in the real world.

and you've seemed to reduce it to personal attacks fact is that, we offline, and unachored a Large Tower and Took it.
The Fact is, That your the first corp i did it to, because my tech II drones and ships went missing.
Another fact, I al loyal who to are loyal to me, i went back and joined Dark-Rising, Where all my friends are, and don't plan on leaving,
Another Fact: You can camp Rutoo in a station all you want, Infact, Where do you think that character has been the past week since this happened? Thats right Station.
Fact: Your not the first person to threaten my eve life, dj st0ra infact was the first. _________________________________________________________

I try to apply the same philosophy to corp theft that I do to any other form of loss in Eve.
The blame ultimately rests with me, because I ultimately made the decisions that allowed someone to take my POS or kill my ship.

I know your every move buddy, phase 1 complete.
I was raised the old-fashioned way, with a stern set of moral principles: Never lie, cheat, steal or knowingly spread a venereal disease. Never speed up to hit a pedestrian or, or course, stop to kick a pedestrian who has already been hit. From which it followed, of course, that one would never ever -- on pain of deletion from dozens of Christmas card lists across the country -- vote Republican.

Bayroo threatened to Kill me so i've heard, Does that relect on him in reallife? According to what you say, yes. According to what i know, the answer is no.
Bayroo Truthfully is a nice guy, and i did enjoy camping gates with teh figther drones and i'm sorry it happened to him. But **** Happens.
And it really shows how naive people are in believing such crap.
I don't take the game seriously at all actually, I enjoy pvp very much and even play underhanded sometimes. I am not saying what you did was wrong, it's not my place to judge. my point was (which you seem to have missed) personal character doesn't change from game to RL, it's the same person making the decisions in both his/her RL as in his/her game.
the only diference is personal morality, consequences and rewards in each are very diferent.
Originally by: Berant To suggest that morality is the only thing stopping the majority of people in this game from being killers in real life seems flawed as an arguement. I'd have thought 'basic psychology' would also back up that a civilised society can identify the difference between a game and RL. Do none of the people here toeing the line similar to Jubei Zon play games like counterstrike? Does the morality you speak of not apply to that game?
you ever play CS on a server with FF turned on and some **** comes in and kills his team over and over again for his own personal kicks? tell me.. where do those "personal kicks" come from? to sudgest people don't use the same contiousness/mind to make decisions in game and out of game is like saying we all have split personality disorder and live in two worlds a game world and a RL world.
I am not comparing killing people in the game to killing people in RL. you can compare killing people in this game to fighting in tournaments in RL if you want to, that's what I do, I am a combat competative person (RL fighter too). there are good fighters, and there are dirty fighters.
And I did not once dog on anyone for taking part in this theift. I was directly addressing the personal character comments.
SO instead of picking out just what you want to read and interpert only what you want to, read the whole thing and the actual point to my posts.
here let me quote one of my key points again:
Originally by: Jubei Zon
What was done is a good tactic sure, but don't try to fool others by saying it's just a game and does not reflect your personal character. You don't use two diferent brains to make diferent decisions in game and in RL. Consequences and Rewards is what drives people's decision.

that's really like saying there are two diferent personalities in everyone. their game personality and their RL personality... yet... they are the same person just in diferent invironments.
Why do people feel the need to defend their alterego? saying that it's "just a game"
I personally wouldn't say that for my self ever, and I enjoy pvp, and even ruining somoene else's fun if it means success for my corp, to a certain degree ofcourse, I wouldn't go and rip a corp off from the inside like that... but that's just me, everyone has their own tactics / aproach to playing the game. This is a competative game and I am after one thing; The success of my corp and my allies. But no one should delude them selves in thinking an mmorpg which is largely based on player to player interaction would be excluded in people's "cruel" side as some may see it. it's human nature. look at history.
by using your HUMAN senses, thoughts, ideas, dreams, what ever. it comes from you.
Don't go getting the wrong idea here, I am not a "champion of the naive" or "carebears" if they decide to be naive about the nature of humanity because "it's just a game" then let them be naive. but if you are an in the closet ******* then you are an in the closet *******. big deal, there are plenty of them around in humanity. remember, in these games... you can do what ever you want, create your own fun. but it's still a reflection of who you are, and no one should deny that about them selves. _______________ Yakuza Vanu CEO _______________ Rotating Sig ftw! I disagree - that's what puts the RPG into MMORPG. Everyone has wondered what it would be like to be ((Insert this here)).
Everyone has some amount of good/bad/etc in them, having a playground to explore yourself is incredibly entertaining. At the same time, a pirate wouldn't consider IRL actually DOING what they do, because in real life others suffer real consequences that affect things outside of the virtual world.
In my case, I would never destroy in real life a ship at sea with innocents onboard. Some will argue that this is because of the consequences of the law (cynics), but the truth is I could never bring myself to do such a thing. Thinking about their families, who they were, etc, I wouldn't. In the game, I know that no matter what I do they will still be able to log off and go back to their real life.
If you make the leap that people -should- care about their avatar as much as they care about their own person, then your point is vaild. I'm suggesting that people -should- be able to put on and take off their "game hat".

That's just an assine comment - "human nature" is a tragic conflict of great good and great evil. It's just the bad stuff that makes the history books.
Quote:
by using your HUMAN senses, thoughts, ideas, dreams, what ever. it comes from you.
More importantly it comes from your imagination. Did you see "Sin City"? Are people who watch it therefore sick weirod cannibals? Do people who play paintball go out and kill people in their neighborhoods for fun?

Indeed. Or, perhaps you simply play one on TV? :)
I will say this - if what you say is true (it isn't), it's really too bad there are so many closet crybabies out there - and that says something profound about humanity as a whole.

Edited by: Jadiin on 17/05/2006 23:11:56 You pay money on a monthly basis to play Eve and to steal all that from a person is just wrong. He invested time, effort and real life money into building all that up, imo what you did is the same as steal in real life and to sit back and say it's a game, move on and start again is just ridiculous. You cannot just "move on" from a 3 year investment into something, this is not a game of Counter Strike we are playing.
The act itself however doesn't exactly strike me as something particularly hard to do either, join a corp, be nice for x amount of time till you have access and then steal everything. Well done, aren't you great, you criminal mastermind you.

People this is a GAME, you people really need to do more things in life. I know most play to escape from pressure of life, fair enough, there many who have taken it too far.
If the mechanics are there for someone to steal from you, then they will use it, also it is stupid to put all your eggs in one basket where someone can just access those eggs and take them to make a free breakfast. Accept the mistake and move on.
1. Never give anyone access to your most expensive items, allow corp members access to their own area, you know where the cheap stuff goes.
2. Keep all expensive items in a station as leaving it at POS is madness.
To those who stole, I think you should give it all back to Bayroo, he worked hard to build his character and all the items that he invested in. Crime does not pay. Even in a game.

Theres only one thing you can do in EVE that would be considered wrong, and thats exploit. The 'Just a game' excuse is the most valid one. Its pixels on a screen, I mean its sad that people lose things in such a way but hey, its part of the game mechanics and keeps things interesting. I mean it sucks to put so much time and effort into one thing and then lose it in such a way but what doesn't kill you makes you stronger. Frankly those using the 'just a game' excuse are (IN MY OPINION) the most mature people out there, because they recognize its just a game and they won't get mad when it happens to them... or will they? DUN DUN DUN!
