maybe someone from polaris/ccp could explain?
I work with SQL in major finacial institution that do LOTS more transactions that you do..
we dont have to take SQL down every day....
I'm just intrested in what you do during DT thats all...

they probably run a script that cleans up the database. ------

It takes them an hour to do the following:
1) Let the code-monkeys run round with the nerf bat, hitting random Classes and Objects.
2) Let's customer support unstick all the people stuck in Yulai, Amarr and Luminaire.
3) Gives the hardware techs ample opportunity to spill beer, vodka and whatever else they must be drinking into the network switch cabinets...
Any other ideas people?

Edited by: 1of1 on 21/09/2003 12:02:37 I'm reliably informed by the pigeon on my roof that the hamster is called Dave.

its not a hamster
they upgraded to a gerbil last patch
(although there is talk about downgrading 'cause the gerbil is a bit scatty)
as to database clean up scripts.. still do see why it needs an hour offline...
if the servers were upto scratch they could do that online...
maybe they need chipminks instead of gerbils?

Bloomin' lazy gerbils.
That would explain all the problems with the new patch...

Really?
I heard lemmings were quite useful. Only problem is that they need replacing on a regular basis

I too don't really understand why it has to be down for an hour. Maybe 15 mins?
If there's memory leaks in the client then there's probably more in the server side software so a simple downtime is a cheap way to fixing problems that might occur after running the game non-stop for say a week .
Maybe they do some log checking / database sorting of some kind... They could also be adding little fixes here and there without telling us because, they've been known to do it in the past .
I too would like to know why it takes a whole hour for the downtime....
Come to think of it, I'd also like to know why it takes about 8 minutes for the server to "start up".... is it to allow for the hamster / gerbil to reach its optimal running speed?

They are flipping coins over who they will give a 1 billion isk bp next :p
Also they feed hamsters as mentioned before. They spend time manually moving bistot and ark royds to polaris and ccp homesystems. They spend some time doing funny stuff like replacing your harvs by 0 units of ore and changing names to something stupid. They spend time warping m0o around.
Also they are having trouble with the AI coding so they bought a bunch of chimps at harrods and are training them to warp in NPC rats and fire at the miners in the belt :p
Originally by: cashman It's time for Eris to get a clue. CCP should make a statement about this.
It's the exact same things as what Zombie did, you may not attack in "safe-areas" (empire/within sentry range) without loosing your ship.
