I know the complaints about local and the benefits. I've been on both sides of the issue. How about some middle ground. How about having everyone in constellation chat instead of a local chat for each system. This would give people warning if there is a hostile in the area but wouldn't be so specific as to where exactly he or she is.
This would also encourage player interaction, forcing people to use teamwork to warn others, or hunt and destroy the hostile.

No need to flame, I don't read every topic ever posted unlike you.
Regardless, we'll just say I agree with the other guy

Frankly in my opinion local is a little overpowering. The ability to instantly spot anyone in system and tell exactly how many people are there and when they leave/enter is a bit too much in my opinion. There are problems with removing local though which are why the op posted all that stuff about a compromise. _____________________________________________

Eh, not just pirates, I don't think. People can't come in and know you're there either. I'm not a pirate (miner here) and personally I would welcome a change. It wouldn't benefit me too much but it would add some fun and depth to the game.

So no local wouldnt benefit miners by forcing pirates to check every belt in every system, rather than just those with people in local?
Of course people whine, its cause your sig sucks

I tire slightly of people trying to make other people play the way they want them to.

Getting noticed in local is a far lesser evil than having to get within scan range of everywhere pilots may be to determine if your prey is there or not.
If the interceptor would lose some of its dmg bonus in favor of getting a scanner range bonus, roughly about 60-70 aus with lvl 5 then having this type of constellation local would be ok in my opinion.

Yes, it does suck when CCP try make players play the game in the way they would like to see it played

Well, no one is *forced* to do anything by changing the system, except maybe be a bit more prepared. It would just be more effective for like-minded individuals to communicate. The same is true in the current system, it would just be easier with constellation chat as the standard.
There are plenty of changes that are advocated, many good, many not, that require people to change their play style. Simply discounting an idea because it would force people to change is ridiculous. It's much more productive to actually discuss the merits or downsides of an idea rather than pure resistance to change.

If local were removed, I'd like to see system scanner range upped to 50AU or 90AU, perhaps with modules to increase it. 14AU is pretty small for a range if you need to use it to find out who's nearby. Possibly added with Constellation anbd Region chat rather than Local, I think it might be very useful.

Ok, one of the biggest problems with Eve just now is lag caused by too many people crowding the hubs in empire space. This problem can only be solved by getting people to move out of high sec.
Now, those that want local removed the most seem to be the pirates of our community. So it is my guess that they hope to get more kills, so making low sec more dangerous. Thus instead of allowing people to move to low sec more easily, removing local would increase the resistance to moving to low sec. (Note: all this refers to low sec not 0.0)
So, while I personally would be in favour of the the change, I do not think the game would benefit from it.

Maybe one of the griefers/gankers/pirates feels like enlightening the not so knowledgable ones about how long it takes to scan the average system using probes and ship scanner and to pin down a possible target that's in one of the belts? --*=*=*-- Megadon CCP wanted a well known artist and celebrity to test the new font so it's approval would be well known. if loacl is changing fore const insteed it will make a channel with hundreds of players (in empire). if you sits and mine in a empire system within the same const that a hub is in you will have to look at hundreds of pilots.
insteed maybe make const channel optimal fore all players, like local but make it posseble to nothave the window up. but if you want you can open const window and se all in const...

Don't need to be a pirate to know this one. Using the scanner with its current 14AU range, you can warp to the planet near a belt, scan the belt for people and if they are there, have a covops drop 3AU probes and scan for them. You'll drop 15km away, then being cloaked get behind them and warp your fighter in right on top of them. Total time should be less than 10-15 minutes from entering the system to landing on top of the target, give or take some time for the time it takes to find a belt with someone in it.
It's a stupid idea, to be honest, because you can just get the covops to warp into the belt cloaked and get behind them. And if you don't have a covops, a shuttle alt will do and probes will do you no good anyway.
In the mean time, they SHOULD have a scanner checking for probes and ships nearby and will be immune to this if they do. There is not a single consequence of removing local that cannot be replaced with the scanner, some practice and a little vigilance. The scanner range could do with being increased, though.

The scanner tells you there is a ship there, but unless the name is left as the default name you don't know if the ship belongs to a pirate or not. So if a ship appears on the scanner the sensible thing to do would be to ss or dock.
Thus our miner chums spend less time mining and more time forum whoring. Earning less money than if they were mining veldspar in high sec. So, as pointed out before, they would just stay there.

Local is important for reasons other than checking people out, it's quick and easy communication with nearby people, which can be necessary at times. I say they make it so you are invisible in local unless you speak. In that way it's like radio silence in real life, they only know you are there if you say something. So if you don't want to be seen, keep your mouth shut, or if you don't mind you can talk away. Also we would need a real scanner then. At least increase the range, possibly give it a nicer interface too? ---------- Sorry but that link contains nawty language. -wystler "Discussing moderation is not allowed" - Ivan K "Ranting is prohibited" - Teblin
