pretty new to the game with about 4 months played but can't figure out or find out why a ship will take 1x or 5x the amount of time to go into warp - same ship same circumstances but sometimes 1x other times 5x spooling time - so much emphasis on details and tweaking a couple of percentage points but this thing really makes a diff and can't figure out why
a BS, for instance, goes into danger territory as far as shield/armor left thinking there's time to warp, yet that same ship takes way longer to actuate the warp sometimes, regardless of circumstance, could be a diff peaceful base or in a battle, no damn way of figuring out why or when warp prep takes fast or slow
thanks for any info

yup, figured that, I'm asking about same ship, same circumstance, taking 1x on Monday, 5x on Tuesday

Sounds like he is saying that the same ship some times take longer than other times, that has nothing to do with size of the ship. Might be mwd/ab differences you are noticing or you are being bumped without noticing. Also time seems a hell of a lot longer when yo are trying to warp away from danger. Also tidi maybe?
Don't think there is any randomization in align so shouldn't be happening without an external cause. |

You would need to explain the situation you were in on Monday when you noticed it and then the situation on Tuesday. And if "the same", what was the actual situation? *** Vote MTU For CSM *** ***Free The Jita 1*** "They feel the need to cover their ears and eyes in horror at your very presence." - Pontianak Sythaeryn "Despite others being missing, at least Ramona is back." - Scipio Artelius |

It is when the ship has an existing momentum vector that is sideways to the desired alignment. It describes a curve whilst it cancels out the old momentum and accelerates along the new course. Although each course chosen by the engine seems reasonable to me, from an observers point of view the randomness in initial and desired vectors will make the final correction time randomly different all the time. Also the actual point of warp may always fall on a server tick which is a further visible variable (that may have no impact on whether you get locked and scrammed or whether you get into warp).
There is also a side effect in that during that process the ship will always show a considerable speed, which makes people think they are nearly ready to warp, and they may pass well past the warp threshold before the ship has cancelled out the smallest parts of the old vector - which it has to do increasingly slowly to not overshoot. If you accelerate from a stop, the ship will go into warp pretty much as it hits the threshold, in a very consistent time.

ok, thanks all, I shoulda figured with all the emphasis and slots put into alignment, and with the diff in anything being expected auto compared to doing it directly, that aligning the ship first would make a huge diff

If your ship is moving before you attempt a warp, the direction it's going can have a huge effect on your alignment time. If your ship is moving near top speed in the same direction as the warp, it will go into warp instantly. However, if you're going full speed in the opposite direction, it will take ages in a large ship. |

I dont know what this sentence means, but my first thought would be that you had your AB or MWD turned on in the second instance, and not in the first. *** Vote MTU For CSM *** ***Free The Jita 1*** "They feel the need to cover their ears and eyes in horror at your very presence." - Pontianak Sythaeryn "Despite others being missing, at least Ramona is back." - Scipio Artelius |

happened to all ships and I just didn't realize importance of aligning first - same as using auto pilot and wondering why it takes so long to jump gates, anything auto is a compromise - always wondered why everybody makes a big deal of keeping aligned in low/null, now I know :)
