I am failing to see your point here. Softimage is okay for character stuff, but tbh it isn't a patch on Maya for workflow. What point is it that you are trying to make exactly? That Softimage is good for space type animations? If so, lol back at ya.

a student can get lightwave for free, softimage is $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
i used a lot lightwave a few years ago, and it has a really nice way to deal with lights. the lens flare controls are beyond what softimage or 3ds can do

My point was laughing at your saying LWs render is up there. While capable of broadcast quailty output its not in the same leauge as Renderman or MR. Thats all. Lws native renderer is slow and clunky and other engines have made huge strides in technology. The package it self is fantastic but its render output is lacking.
Also Software is okay for character stuff? I really do have to laugh at that statement. Mate i use maya and softimage,I have friends working in the FX industry using both and they hate Maya, but ahve to use for certain shots etc.... and XSi`s workflow outclasess it in very department. in maya everyting is bloody hidden, making you trawl thru listers and tabs which is a major fecking pain.

So I have been using 3ds Max 7 for years doing freelance work... Am I missing out on a lot of other programs by not trying them out? I really have a fondness that is unwavering for 3dsm, and to **** off time learning another program that isn't as diverse would only anger me. I've tryed some other ones for short periods - Lightwave 6.0 & Cinema4d, however I was dissatisfied with their diversity & interface. So am I missing out on something spectacular if I don't try Maya or XSI Softimage? I think their should be some sort of eve art kind of contests - I'd love to be allowed to recreate their ship models or maybe even create one of my own to be in the game. :)

Thanks for your kind words. Currenlty my CEO has buddled me into the back of his APOC and is listing me on the auction channel. He wants a Diemos BPO, but will settle for 100 WCS for my services.
Just to answer some of the tech questions. Its all done in lightwave. I use HRI and raydiosity for the ambient component and a few simple linear lights for the direct lighting. Also I use FPRIME to render it. Which is about 50 time faster then Lightwaves now ageing native renderer.
And I dont 100 mill...

Depends what your looking for, I use Maya.
If your looking for a really good pure modelling and texturing program check out Zbrush. Zbrush is great when used in conjuntion with Maya. I've seen that combination used to great effect by some visual effects artists.

Zbrush rocks. Unfortunatley the way it stores its detail is in the form of a normal map. Lightwave does not atm support normal mapping with out using a fiddly pluging. LW 9 which should be out soon will.
I love Z brush...

must admit some of the work that is done with the sigs fascinates me cause basically I am just a cut and paste merchant on my own ones.... would really love to get into some of these and try and get a bit more advanced with the ones I do but I don't think I have the flair for it that guys like Lou do.
Oh and the DICE sig's I must admit are very striking, great job Lou.

Clearly I was saying that LW had improved, not that it was the best. Personally I think C4D's render output is better, but I would be willing to trade a little render power for LW's aninmation interface (as I remember it). It doesn't do anything that C4D can't, it just seemed easier and more logical.
Also, your renderman comment was amusing, as renderman is mostly used as a shader set plugged in to Maya now, and not as the suite it used to be back in the day.
In fact, the problem with 3d apps is demonstrated well by this thread. Users of each are so defensive and elitist that they are unwilling to admitt that some packages do some things better.
Personally, I'd love to combine a few aspects from lots of apps.

Ok they are not hand draw pixel by pixel, but the lighting model is quite complicated. Wouldnt say easy. Out of curiosity, which 3d packages do u use and are u a 3D professional ?

erm Avon please shut up now, its obvious you havent a clue what your talking about. Your obviously either dont use Maya or dont know the difference between Renderman and PRrendeman to which i was referring to. its STILL the defracto standard broadcast quality render for film. :)
Renderman was like used in the Starwars films and the LOTR triology. Perhaps you know of them ?

You are a funny chap. I am starting to think that it is you that is clueless. Renderman is not a rendeering suite, it is an API; one which I have used as it has evolved. Pixar, probably the most famous proponants of renderman, use a renderman compliant suite known as PRMan. This gave (at the time) a pretty good 'intergrated' (although not as we know intergrated in modern apps) suite for developing renderman enviroments. It took away much of the need to manually code every aspect of the renderman scene, especially shaders. For later works, especially for more complicated CG character work, Pixar realised a need to better intergrate the workflow of the character artists with the final render and effects team. The charater artists were now mostly using Maya, whilst the output all had to be RM compliant. This lead to the renderman plugin for Maya, which allowed the character artists to use the renderman shader effects (with cool sliders instead of lines of code) directly, with the output being RM compliant (although only a subset of it). This version of renderman was eventually release to the public as a Maya plug-in.
As to your problems with the Maya interface, I really can't understand what you mean unless you are trying to use it 'out of the box'. The whole point of Maya is that you can fully customise the interface to better support the job it is used for. Once you know the workflow pattern you can tailor the interface to it - and when you do so it is great.
You indications of the films RM has been used for indicate that you probably googled or wiki'd your information, because those are both very poor examples.
I can hand code RISpec SL, so don't start telling me I am clueless about renderman.

Funny, I don't recall making ransom demands of corp B, C, D, E, or F.....specifically I said DICE.
If you're going to debate about how you are better than Lou is at making sigs...prove it.
Anyway, the humble way in which Lou has replied and has also tried to help guide us (well, those who have the slightest clue what he's talking about) impressed Caldari Provisions to the point that they kicked me out for being a trouble maker. >Damned bunch of farmers anyway
Anyway Lou, very gracious acceptance of praise there and keep up the good work. You're safe............for now. |

For your information smart-arse, i was double checking when you initally posted your rabble about renderman. It just so happened to be the 1st 2 films i saw, not that i needed to know anyways. Believe me Im quite well informed on its pedigree of films without having to resort to f.ucking wiki FFS.

He's really talented and good at what he does. Everything is perfect the lighting and the whole dice theme. The radioasity lighting and the models come off really well. He's a great guy too. Keep it up Lou!! and thanks man :D
Btw 3dx max rules, once your in to using a specific 3d package its not that easy to switch unless your really in to the whole 3d thing. I'd agree every 3d package has its own strength's and weaknesses.
