1. This is the big one, so it goes first. Is playing together with one other person rewarding?
Plain and simple -yes.
Originally by: TekDragon If she mines and I go combat - can we still have fun together? Will we both need to go combat? Or both go economic?
My "husband" (we're not married yet but might as well be) and I have been playing together for two years now and I started out sponsoring his PvP with my earnings through mining on my first char. After this experience I say you both need to be self-sufficient in your ability to earn isk. Help each other yes, but industrial char and PvP pair does not go too well because they aren't on the same wavelength in terms of interests and goals. The PvP'r will, at some point or other look down on the industrial char. If one wants to do industry and the other PvP, make sure s/he should be sure to get involved on some level in what the other is doing.
Originally by: TekDragon 2. I've read that the game ."player skill" oriented, and you don't need tens of millions of skill points. Those authors point to the fact that a frigate can take down a battleship with good tactics and luck. My question is - yes, that may be true, but what kind of equipment did that frigate have? Am I going to have to spend months and month learning engineering, electronics, cloaking, hyrbrid turrets, etc - just to have a REMOTE chance of not getting slaughtered?
You gotta do the time, no doubt about it, but to make it easier on yourself, be sure to pick skills and build up attributes suitable to the direction you are going in. Everything else'll be a breeze, especially after learning skills are done training. I was in an assault frigate when confronted by a tempest (minmatar bs) and he did little damage to me. The skills needed to do that, if I trained specifically for that situation, probably would take me less than two months. And to avoid slaughter in the mean time, learn how to use and make bookmarks.
Originally by: TekDragon 3. Is PvP really "it"? I enjoy PvP, and I think my wife will too, but is that really ALL this game has to offer? Every time I read a thread about how to have fun in EVE it always says "Don't mine. Don't do missions. Do PvP." Or, when I read about why EVE is a great game it says "The RP and PvE sucks, but the PvP is great!"
There is a lot of emphasis and notoriety coming through the PvP scene but that is not all there is to EVE. I don't run a lot of missions these days, though I used to, and I npc hunt in 0.0 as well as mine on another char. And I have been in a PvP op and roleplayed. I enjoy all of it for different reasons. But mostly, I think EVE is incredible b/c of its player population, the seemingly endless creative possibilities due to the influence players have on the EVE universe and it's just so damned gorgeous to travel through. And like in any other game, who you play with heavily influences your decision to continue
