Edited by: Roxanna Kell on 22/05/2006 23:02:58 ignore the graphics here for a second and look more at the gameplay, i ve had both games since release and spent hours counted in months playign them, been in a clan for that played both, and still almost every one prefers bf1942, dont know their reasons but mien are simple.
bf1942 first of all didnt have scanner and UAV and stupid artilarry unmaned that gets anything anywere. wish for a sniper like my self really bugs me wish made me spend most of my time in bf2 airborn(dual joystick FTW)the joystick i use
also bf1942 had lots of mods to choose from, and the one i still play a lot, is Forgotten Hope. similar to bf1942, but more realistick terrain planes, about 50 times more vehicules, and realism of gameplay hud of tanks ect, is beyong anything dice or anyone else has produced, i just cant believe its there free for everyone. and when i say dice i mean the programmers not my corp but but sentence still applys. other than that WW2 is always more fun that future combat, as its either skills or tchnology. bf2 has lots of i win buttons. wwelcome commander, yau i win i win the game hasen t even started yet.

so what do you guys thing, let me guese bf2, u wh***s

would go with bf 1942 but bf 2 is fun too when you play on 64 players server

The vanilla 1942 was good but the DC mod was outstanding, i played that for a very very long time.
BF2 is a good game but it don't come close to reaching the standards of the 1942 Genre imo..

Edited by: Lorth on 22/05/2006 23:49:10 BF 1942. Loved that game untill I found eve. Used to play under the name "Evil Santa" though latter some no-body took it and basically ruined the name....
In BF 2 I have a hard time actually finding a server that is playable. Way to much lag, since there's not one server I know of with <100 ping, ushally more. Can't understand why, friends all have the same problem. Differant ISPs, really fast internet conections, and no one can play.

BF1942 couldn't hold me for long... For some reason i don't want to play yet another ww2 shooter.
I like to play as a sniper, and BF2 gives me more freedom in how i want to do that. Nicer maps aswell, and maybe a slightly better balanced game, more difference between classes.
And i like the modern setting :)

I haven't played either, but 1942 is probably better since it's EA and they tend to ruin games with expansions/sequels instead of improving on what they had.
So, basically, this is my bash EA post of the day.

Desert Combat > BF2.
The fact that if you were very good skilled, you could take down choppers and planes with the portable Stinger. Hard to do but very rewarding. Or how about the fact that choppers actually took skill to fly?
Driveable ships, submarine was fun as well. Linking up with another player as spotter for the artillery was also awesome. Instead we got the silly, unamed "I see everywhere and kill whatever there is in this area now" artillery.
I'm really looking forward to Desert Conflict. It is not made by the same people as Desert Combat but the ideas are similar and they want to make them similar.

you are right, desert combat had better maps as well, and flyign choppers on it wasnt easy, wish made it more fun and rewarding.
but try forgotten hope, you would love it, it has roughly around 60 maps atm plus another 50 non official ones.

Although BF1942 was bucket loads of fun it doesn't have the same feeling of team combat that BF2 does. Rather it felt more like you were just a bunch of lone soldiers running around and there was a special rule which meant you were only allowed to shoot half the other lone soldiers. BF2 on the other hand gives a much greater sense of community and working together when its played right. For a start its possible to form squads which really improves the gameplay with its built in teamspeak, ability to spawn at the squad leaders position if you keep him alive, being able to give squad orders which get displayed on the map and being able to see your squad members positions making it possible to co-ordinate attacks. Each soldier type really feels like they have a unique role this time around too and combined with the squad system its possible to balance out the abilities of the players you'll be fighting with so you dont end up with situations like in BF1942 were you find after charging into the enemy base with a load of your team mates that your all snipers. The points system is much improved too with points now being awarded for assisted kills and captures and also for flag defending, healing, and ammo resupplying which encourages well planned team play even further rather than the points system in BF1942 which only rewarded gung-ho soldiers who didn't play to win but only for personal score. So in my opinion BF2 is a great improvement over BF1942.

Points system a good thing in BF2? Ha...don't get me started on all the stat peddlers. The points system is what makespeople playmore for themselves rather than a team in my opinion.

My point exactly ... the system rewards team play rather than just gung-ho lone soldier style play.

Strange. Either you are in a clan then as most public servers I been to had next to no teamwork whatsoever. The occasional guy would swap kit with a dead medic to revive teamates but other than that...not much. AND players still driving over friendly mines with the huge skull and crossbone warning they get annoys me as I like the engineer kit. Ok yes friendly fire off for mines on some servers but I don't like that.

Nope I'm talking about public servers. Suppose it depends how you play it .... did you actualy join a squad and try to communicate and talk tactics with your squad members or did you just run off on your own as if you were still playing 1942?

yep, point system in bf2 is good all right. but dice jsut didnt keep it simple, bit more do it your self, the artillary scanner and UAV annoy the **** out fof me thought, if that get taken off i would play bf2 a bit more often, but still lack of vehicules good terrain, and lag in 64 player servers make it little bit unworthy of my time.

I'd say 1942 aswell.
Quote: bf2 has lots of i win buttons
Yep... choppers, planes, apc's, tanks... all complete pwnmobiles.
Played both a lot... but the planes in 1942 were so awesome, and the vehicles in general were less imba! :P
The choppers in bf2 are like... flying tanks. :P Wayyy too good if ur an uberl33t chopper hoe (like Meridius :D).
In 1942 teh plane dogfighting was awesome, but in bf2 it's a bit dodgy... sometimes the missile hits, sometimes it doesnt.
They nerfed bf2 a bit aswell in one of the last patches, no more jumping + throwing c4 :F

Edited by: Krulla on 24/05/2006 00:15:54 Edited by: Krulla on 24/05/2006 00:14:28 Reasons BF1942 is better:
-No moronic unmanned Artillery, no UAV, no Scanner, none of that crap. -In tank fights player skill is the determining factor. In bf2, every single tank has the same HP, has no weak points, does the same damage, etcetera, and are basically exactly the same. In bf1942 tank veterans in light tanks routinely owned noobs in Tigers simply because they knew were to shoot, how to time their shots, etcetera. In bf2 its point and click, and whoever shot first wins. -More vehicle variety. Bf2 has three tank, three apcs, three jeeps, three fighters, three bombers, etc. Yet each is functionally exactly the same as the other, just another model. In bf1942, different vehicles of the same type were different. The Panzer was faster then the Sherman, The m10 was faster then the Tiger, but had fewer hitpoints etc. Further, each vehicle had different weak spots. The Tiger was weakest in the belts, the Russian tanks were weakest in the turret, etc. In bf2, THERE AREN'T EVEN ANY BLOODY WEAK SPOTS ON VEHICLES! -Bf1942's setting is ten times more interesting than bf2's setting. -MORE VEHICLE VARIETY!. BF2 has; Tank, APC, jeep, buggy, fighter, bomber. End. 3 variants of each, and no difference in how they are in game, stat wise. Bf1942 has: Heavy tank, light tank, APC, jeep, Fighter, Light bomber, heavy bomber, Artillery, Motorcyle. And 3+ variants of each and every one, with unique stats, unique hit locations, etcetera. -NO ******* MORONIC, STAT-***** PROMOTING, GRINDFEST STAT SYSTEM!
What Bf2 has over bf1942: -Better infantry combat -Better graphics.
