I never understood the hype that preceded this game. It was another fantasy MMO. With elves. And swords. And magic. Woo-hoo.
I never understood the record-breaking sales. I didn't understand the "OMG BLIZZARD!" free press that this mediocre game got.
I never understood why my roomates wanted me to play so badly.
I played to level 40 as a shaman, and found out that I played "wrong" and had to be pidgeonholed into the most boring corner of the "tanker/nuker/healer" holy trinity in future "raids."
I did not understand how anyone could feel "heroic" if everyone was "heroic." Or how a dozen people ganging on an eyeball monster was somehow an epic encounter. I thought heroes didn't need glowing green mist washing over them every five seconds? I better re-read my Tolkien.
WoW sucked in concept, was uninspired, and is getting worse with the glut of new "raid" content in place of anything fun or meaningful to do.
So... why WoW?

My point was, a LOT of people have that "different taste." It confuses me how such a dull, bland, linear crapfest with nothing but raids in endgame can be so endearing.

So? Does it bug you that they play another game that you dont play? does that make your life incomplete in some day? Why do you care so much? Go get a hobby so you'll stop thinking about it already.

a lot people play it BECUASE it is so popular.
Even people who don't know MMO's or computer games know about WoW.
And think of it.
If you had say 100 friends, over half of them(if they were into MMO's) would play WoW. Not Eve, or City Of Hero's, or some of the "smaller" MMO's, they'd go for the basic cookiecutter MMO's like WoW.

Personally, I played WoW the day it came out and on. I've played in my own way without listenning to the "AAhhh druids heal they don't damage deal!". I ended up in a HL Guild having fun in every instance. The game had potential, but the problem came form the players. The game really became interesting when you joined a small community, where personality was a little more developed...
Since I learned about EVE, yes, I did find that the community and the game concept were magnificent. I think both games can be fun as long as you find out what to do in them and with whom...
Thanks for making the lives of new players easier in this game and for being a joyful community . |

I think what makes WoW so popular is the fact that it is easy enough to understand the game mechanics, yet challenging enough to keep people interested. WoW wasn't really a game marketed for the hardcore MMORPG player, but for the average person that wanted to try something new. There were a lot of people out there that heard of Ever*****, or Final Fantasy online, and wanted to try something like it, but not as hard to play. WoW is cake.
While the first few levels are fairly boring and repetitive (go kill 10 of these, slay 20 of these, find 30 of these, etc), the game soon reaches a point where even the casual player can have a good time raiding a low-level dungeon with a small group. This is a big win for the casual MMORPG player that plays a couple of hours every other day or so.
Of course, once you reach lvl60, you soon realize that you're screwed and can't do anything unless you join a raiding guild that requires you to be there every night to raid MC/BWL/AQ/etc, where every class has a very specific role. The regular instances are no longer challenging or you now want the gear that drops only in the big instances, so at this point, you really don't have much of a choice. That was the main reason why I left WoW to come to EvE. I couldn't be bothered with spending countless hours just raiding the same instance hoping that my tier 2 armor piece drop, hoping that I'd win the roll or that I'd have enough DKP to get it. I have a life, a wife, a job, things which really don't mesh well with WoW. ;) EvE is much more flexible in that aspect, as I play when I can, and can log in occasionally to skill train, etc. I'm not tied to my computer, forced to go on another 4 hour run, just to hopefully get some gear.
Now all I need to do is move to 0.0 to 'spice up' things a bit.
W R U is recruiting. Please check this thread for information. |

I played WoW During the Beta and Release and stuck with it for a while mainly due to the fact of it was pretty and ZOMG They jump! Although you can definately get better jumping action with CoH/CoV...Anyways, by the time I had grown tired of the game i had a 60 Rogue and a 60 Priest and it was those SPECIFIC roles that busted my chops. LFG ZG! Do you Have Imp Sap? Um...Nope Noob WTF?!
Unfortunately I made the stupid decision and rolled Alliance so PvP Wasn't a good escape from it either...
C'mon People use some STRATEGY! Flank THEM! Flank?! Wtf is that n00b?! AHHH!!!
When i finally threw in the towel i decided i was sick of the 2-Handed Sword of Newbness and Oooh Got my Breastplate for the Set Bonus route, checked MMORPG.com and saw EVE-Online on the top spot and Here i am... I <3 You EVE, Never Leave me! --------------------

The problem with most of these fantasy type of games is that they attempt to give every player the chance to be the hero of the story. Nothing wrong with being the hero, but there is something distinctly wrong with there being 50,000 heros all vying for the same status in the same story. Usually you have a hero and 49,999 peasants. Instead, these games attempt to give everyone an equal opportunity to be King Arthur, and thus make it possible for 50,000 unique Sword of Excaliburs to exist in the game. Even though the Sword of Excalibur itself is a "lore" item, meaning only one of it is actually in existance, but everyone can own their own "copy" of it. So when everyone reaches the top level of the game and does the top quest and gets the top reward, there's nothing left to do but start over with a new newbie character and get to the top yet again, albeit through a slightly different route. Yay, I can explore more content... wooo... NEXT! no NEXT GAME!

WoW supports the casual gamer, one doesnt need a guild to get far.
main reason ive avoided big corps in EVE or big builds in WoW is i no longer want to be told i need to be online all the time, i did the big guild thing in Everquest, we were #1 on the server. six years later i look to just relax alittle.

I honestly think it's cause of the interface customization. need a dps counter, make one, need a xp/hour counter, make one. Just imagine if you could hit a button in EVE and it would find out the target is at XXkm away and switch all your guns crystals to the correct range, yeah over powered in PvP, but WoW isn't real MMO PvP, it's crap PvP so having advantages like that don't matter.
things you could do in eve with wow style .lua stuff: organize bookmarks better log your dps to find out what works better against certain npcs the market graphical enhancements isk per hour calculators
i honestly think WoW's succes is based on it being so customizable. But I could be very wrong cause why then would wow be populated with such a vast array of idiots that surely cannot figure out even simple macros.

lol, right
YA RLY!
Most of those 2-5 million subscribers (whatever is the current record) don't raid. Even Tigole put percentage of raiders at 20% in an interview. He was just guessing, btw.
1-60 is pure poetry. Quests may be a bit unimaginative, but that's compensated by actually having other people in the game. WoW is not successfull because it's an excellent MMORPG (whatever that is), but because it's a good single player game. And a very good 5-man coop game.
It also helps that it builds on a well known franchise and is a polished software product.

Because SWG was a sinking ship. And I love PvP in all forms, and I heard WoW had a great PvP system.
Which was true, but not anymore, as ranks are more of a CP grind then an actual skill based system.
So, I pretty much play EVE only now. --- Even if you're never gonna play Warhammer Online, watch this. |

I play WoW, mainly because I find the missions more stimulate than EVE and it is something you can play in short bursts. You don't find yourself sitting around for ages waiting like in EVE (e.g Mining, Alliance PvPing, Camping, etc), you can just go somewhere and BLAMO something. ==================================== EVEkill (Founder, ex-developer) Visit our homepage |

I play WoW from time to time because fuxxford wont fix the PvPsystem in EVE so i can fly my favoriteship. So atm im wh○ring the forums, hunting Tux. And i wont ever quit untill the BTs are a valid choise in combat again.
Having Tuxford fixing the blasters is like having a blind man teaching you how to drive - just wont work.

I get tons of discussions many times with friends about WoW.
Classic arguement : How do you know in EvE that you are better than the XYZ guy ? How do you know in WoW that this rank 14 player got the rank by doing 24/7 BG ?
Why don't you try something else ? Like what ? (and he DOES have a point, there is almost nothing else good on the MMOG market apart from EvE(PvP) and WoW (PvE))
Don't you get bored waiting for 1h for an instanced BG only to get your ass kicked by another guild ? ... (they still haven't found a good arguement on that) _____________________________

Edited by: Dray on 02/06/2006 17:09:58 I can see the appeal of WoW tbh, but it just isnt for me, I like reading fantasy but there my intrest ends, I like the fact Eve takes time and thats why I play, but what I love most about Eve is that it's so unforgiving, loss should hurt and in a lot of cases it does.
long live Eve, and beer, and football, and women of loose morals.

A damn good point to be honest, its also fair to say the following of the rts series helped aswell, and they were very good rts games.

WoW promised so much to the mass of idiot gamers and the casual gamer that it drew the massive crowds.
However the casual gamer has been given roughly a '**** you' since the game is all about the grind, thanks mainly due to the EQ people working on the game now, and the fact that every damn game blizzard makes is nothing more than the diablo 'grind grind grind, oh item, grind grind grind grind oh this item is allitle better/worse' and repeat.
The war system is nothing like the orginal plan, which would've been true WC takeover style, but will never, ever exist since they did the battlegrounds instead, which are a joke.
WoW's only reason for being popular is the RTS, nothing more. If it were another generic MMO, it'd have died off already.
