Originally by: Goonwave however, would not say, and really i'm just basing this on what i read on the forum, that once you get up to speed and venture into 0.0 space, the game becomes totaly different in terms of whats expected froma player?
a GOOD game gets more interesting and difficult the more you play it.
i'm gonna assume the general consensus is that EVE is a GOOD game
so again, why make the very beginning harsh on the noobsters, when the end game is still very complicated
hehe, but thats just it. this game doesnt punish skill mistakes like other games do. i can fit t2 miners but i dont mine any more. does that have a large impact on my combat ability? nahh, using blasters when i should be fitted for range has more impact on my combat ability .
when you get to the end game in eve mistakes in skills you made early on have faded into insignificance. the only real mistakes you can make are to choose really bad attributes. i reccomended one newbie should wipe his 4 day old char with 3 perception and start over. but thats about the extent of the mistakes you can do to break a character. unlike most other games where a mistake means you get stuck near the end game unable to kill the monsters of you level, in eve there is no level cap, you can always train up to be better or save up to get better gear. you wont ever be completly stuck and have to start over to get past a point you found impossible.
so dont worry, your not going to gimp your character with bad skills when your still in the start of the learning curve. in fact from reading your posts i think its more important to put peoples minds a ease over poorly chosen skills than it is to allow them to move skills arround.
while i agree with you on the harsh learning curve i dont think skills are a large part of the problem. what is more of an issue is all the confusing terms and numbers that dont mean a thing when you first start. some of it boils down to silly things like PDU's not relating to their ingame name anymore. I didnt even notice when that accronym stopped working so its no wonder the poor new commers are getting confused!
yes things like transverce velocity are hard to grasp if you dont have a physics background, but its not something you need to know much about in a frig. its far more important to learn how to get into the right range for a frig. at cruisers transverse starts to be used a bit more and its a must for BS's. the curve is steep and ccp have always been working on trying to ease players into it.
you should have seen the tutorial when the game first started. "your in a ship, now fly to that asteroid", "what smegging asteroid!!!"
the stickies about transverce velocity and missile damage on these forums are all new things to help players understand whats going on behind the scenes and how to work with it.
so yes this game is difficult to get started in, but aside from botched attributes you realy cant loose the game by making mistakes. sure you can slow your self down but your still going to get to the same place in the end.
and the upside of the complex game is the community it attracts, even the flaming and smack talk on these forums is civilised compared to other simpler games . take some hot topics like WCS nerfs or ship setups and compare the smack talk in there with silkroad's forums. its like walking from a retirement home with some irate inmates to a school playground with irate teenagers. sure both can have foul mouths and some seem to lack intelegence, but its a very different feeling between the 2 communities.
so, welcome to eve. if your ever stuck on something and i'm online spark up a convo. if i'm not in the middle of getting invaded by deja's orrible lot i'll be more than happy to give you some time
Because sometimes you just have to go back to your roots: [2005.02.20 01:08:03] (combat) Your Civilian Light Electron Blaster perfectly strikes Serpentis Smuggler, wrecking for 20.3 damage. |
