Hrmm my instas always suck what am i doing wrong? I will warp towards said gate, then hit my AB and go past the gate 15km and click the add bookmmark button then type in some text and hit okay while moving that entire time. It seems like my bookmarks are always alot further way. Ie when i warp to 15 to a BM i think i put 15 past a gate ai am still like 10-15 past the gate?
Is the location of the bookmark set when you click add bookmark or when you close the BM?
Anyone can offer up a good technique for making BM's would be appreciated seems mine all such grr.

It's when you click "OK" the coordinates are saved, not when you click "add bookmark"

Edited by: Thanakar Kefferdil on 23/05/2006 19:58:42 For stations I find that going 8km past is perfect, that puts you right on top the station when you use it. I find 10kms is about right for jump gates. Don't forget you can jump at 2.5 km from the gate so that gives you 5km window before and after the gate itself.

To make a good BM on a gate, you want to be just when it switch between 11 and 12 km from the gate. And make sure your ship and the target gate is aligned to the gate/place your jumping from to the bookmarked gate.

Gate BM's: warp to the gate and fly in a straight line till you are 12Km from it (on the other side duh) and bookmark that location. Be carefull when you warp in from steep angles (ie not on the horizontal plane) as your ship tends to level out when you slow down after dropping out of warp. This makes you fly at the wrong angle when you increase your speed. Best is to go full speed straight after dropping out of warp, before you start slowing down. You can always check the alignment of the gate relative to where you came from.
Station BM's: these are the easiest. Dock and undock, then bookmark where you undock. Most of the time this bookmark is close enough to the center of the station. If not then just fly to the center of the station (above or under it) and bookmark that location. With these insta's you can fly in from any direction and get an instant dock.

For warping to the object at 15k go past the object by 12km AND STOP then make the bm...
for warping to the object at 20k go past the object by 17k AND STOP then make the bm.
Station BMs make them as soon as you undock
Safe Spots, warp to a planet on the scanner far away from where you are, make the BM as soon as you enter warp as the thing seems to be lagged.
All these bms land you right on target. -=====-

When your getting close stop engines, drift into 12km, click add bookmark and hit enter asap.
Open up the bm and rename it to something as you approach the gate / next bm position.

I am a perfectionist when creating my bookmarks.
What I do is I fly past the gate, over 11km (any distance will do, even 20km) Then I meticulously align the central icon of the gate with the icon of the place of departure (usually another gate or station). What I do is I click on the departure point on the overview so the icon gets boxed. Makes it easier to identify.
I try to align as good as possible by reducing ship speed and flying up, down or left, right until they are aligned. When the boxed departure icon and the station icon are aligned then i APPROACH the gate at low speed until I am at 11km. There I stop and create the bookmark.
Aligning like this ensures that you will be 100% in jumping range of the gate. For there is a certain randomness in the warp out point now (remember the Bumps of ancient times! lol, when all warp out points were the same.)

^^^ What he said, with the addition: get a gun with 15 km optimal range (do show info in the refit screen to see optimal range with your skills/ship bonuses and mess about with ammo).
Then after you aligned and are say 20 km from the gate, enable your tactical overlay. This will give you a 15 km bubble around your ship indicating the optimal range for the gun. Now when the edge of that bubble goes through the gate, hit the make bookmark button.
Thank my corp mate for this handy tip

Friend of mine tried to make his in a 3km/s frigate without knowing this, needless to say they didn't work :)
I always do them in a shuttle, fly past and cut engine at 8km make BM name and OK, with a shuttles rapid decceleration you don't get more than 10km away by the time you've made it.
