Greetings
I would like to share something with you and its called game addiction. I have always been addicted to computer games, my first gaming session was 16 years ago. This addiction has a big effect on my life, i have lost friends and even a wife. I play 14 hours aday and i'm unemployed cause of this, i do have friends but not many left. I have had professional help, but it didn't help at all, cause i don't want to quit playing, there is just no way around it. I feel like an alcoholic without the alcohol, if i'm not playing. This is not a whining post about Eve being addictive, i'm just talking about my bad habbit, i love Eve!
Alright now you know the background. Now i stumbled across eve through my friend that recommended it, so i started a trial account. It didn't take me very low to subscribe 4 accounts, this means that i will eat tunafish everyday for the remaining month, cause i'm so poor, LOL! I hope that those that are addicted to Eve atleast enjoy it like i do and those that are addicted to all games like i am, just need to realize that there is no other way!
You love it, so do it! (I know this is a silly post, but its 3am where i live so i had to write something now i go back to mine.)

Welcome... you're one of us now
Seriously though - it might be worth seeking addiction counselling again. I know that you found that it didn't help last time, but you attributed this to "not wanting to quit". I don't think that's a necessary objective in this kind of situation - perhaps just looking at ways of coping with and managing the addiction so that it can be a healthy part of your life without causing too many problems. I often talk about work-life balance but an eve-life balance is equally important.
Failing that, marry a multi-millionaire who loves both you and EVE in equal amounts. ______________________ 106 days and still a hijack virgin... Cherry popped! ~kieron Kieron... I have some bad news... |

Those are great advises =) Yeah i should seek help again, but one good thing about eve is that i don't need to force my self to stay awake to grind, cause now i can happily sleep while my skills get better. Maybe some kinda balance would do me good. Anyway Eve rocks and i have been playing it 10 hours today and loving every second.
Btw... If there is any millionair Eve female players, shoot me a tell!!!

Ween yourself off the game. I dont' mean account wise, I mean time wise.
say that for every 6 hrs you play, you have to spend 6 hrs with friends, exerciseing, reading books, cleaning house.. something.
Then move it to 4hrs of game:6hrs of other the 2hrs of game:6hrs of other 1hr of gameL:6hrs of other.
Then cut it down to 1hr a day.
Then stop for a week. Then 2, then 3 then 4.
once you've not played for a month, cancel your account to all MMO's, uninstall all games from your PC, shelve all portable gameing media, and give your self 6 months of NO games.
After that 6 months, if you want to come back to games, limit it jsut 2hrs a day. period.
Even if you kick this "Addiction" you'll be addicted all your life no mater what people say, you can't "Cure" this addiction becuase it's an addiction. You'll fight it all your life.
But you CAN control it. limiting your time is one thing. Cutting down your game time and getting a part time job help. Then a full time job. Then try to fix your financial situation(as I can imagine how much you owe your friends/family) and balance all accounts.
once you're back on your feet, start looking for a partner of the opposite sex(or same, depending on orientation)and so on.
By that point in your life, you should be secure in your addiction. You should be able to play games in your free time and drop it when there is no time for it.

Dear Arabus
I'm doing a dissertation (due tomorrow) on addiction to MMORPGs, EVE in particular. I fully understand what you're going through - I'm addicted to EVE as well.

Edited by: Flyyn on 31/05/2006 18:17:09 I would say unplug you power cord. Place it in a self address envelope. Place that one in another. Mail it to a friend in another country. Have him mail it back in a week. When your power cord arrives, reinstall and see what it feels like.
If for some reason you still feel the same. I would suggest finding some member of law enforcemt, a big un to be sure, walk up, and ***** slap him.
When you wake up in jail, and your time the judge gives you, is up. You will no longer feal Eve is an addiction.
But that is just me...
Its just a game people get a grip... |

I also get addicted to games really easily. I always have one game that I'm addicted to. At the moment it's EVE. Before EVE it was a browser-based MMORPG called Kingdom of Loathing which I was addicted to for about a year and a half or so. Then I found EVE.
Thankfully I don't get addicted to it as much as other people (I still have loads of friends and something that resembles a social life) but I am addicted to it enough that I'm on it pretty much all the time when I'm home. This has had a large impact on my schoolwork. I'm a pretty big procrastinator anyway but for the past couple of years I've just not been doing any homework at home an instead leaving it until the bus journey to school or until the lesson where it has to be handed in and I've been copying somebody else's. With my GCSE's starting properly next week i'm getting pretty concerned by the fact that I have done NO revision. I would just cencel my subscription to EVE until my exams end but I payed for 3 months and those 3 months end at the end of June. Which is after my exams finish.
Hopefully I'll be able to get myself to take a break while the exams are on. If only there were willpower implants in real life. I sure could use one.

You really should get some help if you're addicted to gaming. Unfortunately, no matter how much help you get, you have to want to quit too, otherwise it wont work.
Good luck though.

Heavy, a dev! How about trying to set limited aims in eve playing every day? Also trying a bit of cold turkey - I've done that before, in 4 weeks I didn't think about eve regularly.
It is probably a question of finding something else that is fulfilling in life (maybe not as fulfilling).

and on a serious note: I know where you're coming from in regards to gaming addiction as I have been through it myself (albeit not to the point you're at). My only advice is what worked for me, which when I noticed I was getting addicted to a game, backup my save files and uninstall it and leave it for a couple of weeks. If I still wanted to play afterwards, the addiction had generally worn off and I was able to play it "normally".
The problem, as wranger said though, is that you have to want to stop playing.

I have a solution for you! Do you feel like you're trapped? Have no time for anything else? Well.....
Can I have all of your stuff? I'll gladly take on the addiction for you :)
Seriously though, if you really feel the need to seek help the first thing you should do is get rid of all the stuff you have an inactivate your account and stay away from games - find the help you need rather than revel in the addiction.
(Seriously though, can I have your stuff? )

Well, if you lost your job over gaming... try setting up a site like mmorpg.com and have adverts like the Eve subecription thing... see if you can get revenue that way.

The way I always saw it, addiction to games is a bit different from addiction to alcohol or drugs as there is no physical dependency involved. What you should ask yourself is what forces you to actually play that much...Usually it has to do something with what is going on or missing from your real life, perhaps something like depression or anxiety. People tend to do complusive things to get away from those. I dont think you need addiction counseling, but just some regular therapy sessions to get your real life sorted out. What i found that works for me when i start complusively gaming is going back to some old hobby that I liked to do years ago. It helps to break up my gaming time and prevents me from geting sucked into games.

Been there. Well, not all the way there but I did find myself neglecting other parts of my life.
So I quit Eve. Got it all under control and came back a year and a bit later. Joined a corp but made sure they knew I'd only be a part-time player. And I am. I love the game but really, it's just that. A game, not RL.
Get help if you need it. But when push comes to shove, it's all about willpower. RL is great, I can almost say I "play guitar" now. Almost...

my advice for fellow addict:
get a ity5 with a basic miner, then set it afk mining once a day. everybody will hate u ingame, but at least your subconcious will feel like you are still in game doing something. so you should be free and clear for a couple hours to leave the house and do something in real life. if u get blowed up no worries, at least u tricked yourself to get some time away from game to do something else.
also try to cut down to 3 accounts instead of 4 if you can. i eventually got my 5 accounts down to umm, kinda 3 now. it was painful tho... had to juggle around a lot of good pilots to keep em out of the biomass bin;);)

I'm addicted to eve forum :/
More seriously, after 3 months of thinking I was addicted to wow and then quitting cold I kind of surprised myself, how easy it was etc. My opinion is that wow is by far the most dangerous and addicting mmo on the market atm, and it might be fueling its huge numbers. Eve can be addictive if many conditions are met, not by itself. Theres no raid timers, theres no 40 man instance farming forcing a routine of gameplay that increase the addiction pattern. You can have big fleet battle but it can be at any day and time, not on a regular pattern.
