Must be:
o AGP 8x o At least 128mb RAM o Better than a Geforce 6600GT o Preferably nVidia o Cost under ú150 including VAT.
If you fancy winning 10m isk, provide me with the card and the website to buy it from. If I pick that card and site, you get the isk :).

Damn you! I was gonna link that XFX!!
/runs off and cries
I don't really like the low Core Clock on the XFX, but it can be over clocked most likely... unless it has been already in factory. Which would suck, but that was the only that had me skeptical. --- --- --- ---

holy crap those were some quick responces.
don't forgot this is ú150, not $150 so the company/site needs to be based in the UK (added to rules just in case people didn't make the connection)

If you want to upgrade to PCI-E (PCI Express) then yes, you'll need a new motherboard. I would recommend getting one SLi/Crossfire capable. You don't have to set the SLi/Crossfire up immediately, but at least you'll be able to in the future without having to buy another motherboard.
As for something better than your ATi card... ummm... anything with nVidia painted on it . Seriously though, for reasonable price/niceness... I would go with the XFX listed in the third post. Or the eVGA. --- --- --- ---

Here's one for you:
ASUS N6800/TD - 512 MB DDR II for an amazing ú121.99.
This one isnt as fast as the gainward one for 159. But with this one you'll have some money left that you can spend on something else.

If you're willing to overlook that last criteria, TigerDirect has some really good prices. They had several nVidia 7800s that were right at ú150 (or ~$280), but after shipping it would be a bit more. I found one that fit all criteria (even after shipping probably) except the last one.Linkage

Just picked up an AGP 512Mb x1600 Pro.
It's over on eBuyer:
http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/105773 http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/102409
I can easily use it to drive HL2 at 1280x1024, with full HDR, AAx2, etc.
And both Under your puny earthling ú150 notes. ú93 and ú80 respectively.
Make any gratuity in ISK please :)

I would recomend a Gainward card as they are very fast compared to the reference design and are very quiet. They come pre overclocked with more memory.

TBH, the thing is a bit loud, but the ATI-Tool can change the fan-RPM based on temp. *bear in mind that a bit loud to me is based on the PC being silent before, it's inaudible from other side of the room.

I'll agree with Kip here, the 6800 looks faster. I guess it's those Pro/XT/XTX/GS/GT/GTS thingies that push a card from being below average to above it.
Aren't I right in thinking that x1??? ATI cards are natively compatible to PCI-E, but nVidia need an AGP/PCI-E bridge chip? Hence why they can offer upto the 7800 with an AGP slot?
Anyway, no complaints from the x1600 card I have. I think a lot of the noise is down to me now having a crap heatsink and pushing the PSU harder.
Bear in mind though, you'll have to upgrade eventually. So I would still go for the cheap-o x1600 and save some notes for a full PCI-E setup at a later date. I share your pain though; I bought the AGP card when it was ú120. For me to replace the box with an Athlon64/PCI-E setup would cost ú400+.

AFAIK the later NV stuff is native too... anyway, 6800GS are out of production, you cant actually get a hold of them in the USA anymore, so if you plan to stick to AGP grab one while you can.
However, keeping you cash would be a good idea if youd like to upgrade:
AM2 stuff will be available at the start of next week... it is already in some places. Conroe wont be much longer - plenty of people on xtremesystems have one already, someone broke 4GHz on a 2.6GHz conroe the other day.
Keep an eye out on fleebay and youll find plenty of s939 stuff flooding on as early adopters switch mobo/cpu/ram. ----------------
