This means, that like eve, ppl on the forums raging are the minority. Either other dustbunnies don't care, don't know, or just want to play
Actually if you clicked on the link I mentioned it was 4300 max online last week.
(4300-3487)/4300*100 = 18.9 %

Carniflex wrote:Is this an "EVE is dying" thread?
Although on a bit more serious note - DUST has been on its way out for a while now bcos let's face it - it's on a dying platform. While Sony keeps milking it for a little while more the writing is clearly on the wall for PS3.
Sorry! Wrong Forum! Eve is dying belongs elsewhere.
Also PS3 is not a dying platform. According to ROFLCCP there are ROFL80 Million PS3s out there. With those numbers how can you question CCPs Logic.
#ROFLCCP #ROFL80MillionPS3s #ROFLLogic

On a serious note though;- PS3 still caters to a vast majority of gamers. New games coming out also have PS3 versions. PS3 aint going anywhere SoonGäó. |

Carniflex wrote: Well - as far as I understand it it will be a while before Legion will come out. So the decision, in my opinion, is only effective few years down the road. They basically just announced that they will do a PC version somewhere 2016, at best. Probably around the same time as PS4 version will come out (as if you are already developing for PC then it should be feasible to port it also to PS4) or dunno, perhaps they will just switch only the DUST514 part over to PS4. I would not hold my breath about PS3 still "going strong" few years down the road. As it stands today even a ~35 EUR computer-on-a-stick has more RAM than PS3. Hell, you can buy a phone that has more RAM than PS3 for a quarter of price of one. By 2016 I would expect ~300 EUR tablets to have about 8x more RAM and about equal graphics processing power to PS3. This platform is just old.
TBH as far as ports go at this point I would not be surprised to see an core EVE version for PS4 ;) Hell, all it would probably take would be a a keyboard and mouse on one and recompile + 3 months of QA. As as it stands today EVE is very capable of running at 1080p @ 60 Hz if you have a ~7850 equivalent GFX card and 8 GB of memory. And they seem to be one of of the launch titles for the Sony Morpheous VR headset with their Valkyrie on PS4 (and also releasing it for PC Occulus also "exclusively (on PC)).
Agreed!
I love the PS4 even though I own both the PS3 and PS4. There are some games that I play on the PS3 and Dust was/is one of them. The difference between the PS4 and PS3 is huge.
I played FF14ARR. On the PS3 I noticed lag and sometimes at the cities I couldnt see most people. Some quests I couldnt even do. However on the PS4 I was able to everything I could do on the PC.
The consoles are dedicated machines and hence the favor gaming more. I have a 32 GB rig that I use for gaming/Adobe CS. Its the same when I play the games that are PC/PS4 compatible.

Carniflex wrote:In my opinion with the changing hardware landscape consoles are losing their edge. Ofc I'm not silly enough to come out with claims like "consoles are dying" as it would be as silly as to claim that for the PC, however, that out of the way, It is clear that the consoles are losing their hardware edge they used to have past few generations. I mean past few generations traditionally consoles have been offering better graphics than equally priced PC's. This is no longer the case. You can today assemble the PC for the same price as the console which will beat it. That is including the "optimizations" for the console. For the sake of completeness link as well for the relevant study: http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-2014-the-next-gen-digital-foundry-pcSame goes for PS3 btw. About 2 years ago I assembled a PC for 225 EUR that was capable of beating the console. Sure, the difference was not overly dramatic but the fact that one would be able to assemble a PC that plays better for such a low price already 2 years ago is a clear indication of how old the previous gen consoles managed to get before the console manufacturers got the next gen in. What is still going for the consoles, in theory, is simplicity. Your "average" console gamer has no interest in assembling his own PC as doing so sensibly on such a tight budget takes certain amount of interest and background research. It is easy to beat the console by just throwing a pile of money at hardware, but on equal hardware budget some compromises must be done. There is also assumption that consoles are "easier" to operate by being plug and play although I would say it is no longer quite that straightforward. Digital distribution is quite widespread already on consoles so in that regard it is no different than PC as you also need to do installs or register or log in, etc even if you bought the physical disk. But the assumption seems to be still there among layman's so this gives consoles a certain edge. So Consoles, in general, are not dying, but they are losing their edge and probably also some ground. In particular Wii is in trouble as for very casual gaming tablets / mobiles are already strong enough and cheap enough to compete with it. It will take a while for that to happen for the more traditional consoles like PS4. But there is a reason why Sony and MS are focusing more on "other services" than just pure gaming. I would say that current gen consoles are no longer all that focused on gaming as they used to be in the past some gens.
That was a very interesting article. Thank you. It confirms things I already knew about the PS4/Xbone and I am glad I stuck with Sony. I am going to excerpt something from that article here;-
"However, PC elitists expecting a knockout blow against the consoles - PlayStation 4 in particular - may end up disappointed by our findings. The amount of power you're getting in a small form-factor box - complete with a substantial backing ecosystem - offers simply phenomenal value. And all of the games tested are first-gen efforts; clearly they will get better. The only question is whether future optimisations for console improve the PC experience, or whether we'll be reliant on PC brute-forcing its way to supremacy, as per the last generation."
As you correctly pointed no one of the consoles are scaleable. However gaming is not what is used to be. Gaming is now considered a viable means of social and family interaction. Have you ever been to a gaming party before? If you have the only thing you will see over there is consoles. While 1 year from now you will be abe to add more RAM to your PC or change your graphics card but it will certainly be difficult for you to pack that PC up and take it to your friends place to play a few games with him or her. However with consoles the portability is a major factor.
As more and more people adopt gaming as a method of social interaction I see PCs loosing their edge.

Min Lo wrote: I haven't. To what monitor/TV do these people connect their consoles? Is the idea here that transporting a power-strip, monitor, keyboard, mouse, and case is substantially more difficult that transporting a power-strip, monitor, input, and console?
Or is it just that the destination is unlikely to have enough convenient desk space as opposed to couch space?
There are different ways to achieve this;-
This is the way my friends and I do it;- We generally head to someone's basement that can accomodate 6-10 gamers. My family room works great with thise number too. Generally we have only 1 TV and a couple of portable projectors. We make sure we have lots of controllers and everyone get their spares. You will be suprised how soon those controllers run out and time flies when you are having fun. We connect the systems XBox or PS to the TV and the projectors and play the games we want to. If people want to switch they just switch. Its a pot luck and everyone gets some grub.
Another way is if you dont have the portable projectors is too use just 1 TV. You can play 4 player games like NBA, Marvel or FIFA which the others just chill, cheer you on and just socialize.
All my gaming hommies and hommettes are drinking age. So we generally have booze floating around and air mattresses in case anyone needs to crash.
Its a lot of fun and takes the gaming experience to a whole new level. I have actually made some RL acquaintances only because of gaming.
To answer your final question if the destination has more couch space or room you can have more fun by playing dance games.
And you can fit all your console equipment in a backpack. |

Carniflex wrote:Edge wise - it is always hard to predict - especially the future So we'll see.
I guess location plays a big factor what the general preference of gaming methods. You mentioned Kgs so I figure your location would be European or Asian.
I am a East Coaster myself and I play on the PC and PS3/4. On the PC I just play Eve and on the PS3/4 I play Dust, Warframe, Flower and Diablo 3.
All my gaming contacts have atleast one console and one PC for gaming. There are some that have 2/3 consoles and a PC. So even though all of game of the PC our gamer parties are console based. A lot of Mario Cart, Dance Revolution, Guitar Hero, Marvel and LOTR games.
LAN/Gamer parties are awesome. Its the the present and a good way for gamers to interact socially. And lets face it odds are most gamers are extremely introverted and LAN/Gamer parties help break the ice. |
