Is it possible to put flagged players at the top of local? In a system like Jita there's no way you can fit all those names on your screen so you have to scroll through to hunt for war targets. |

Despite all these big and little UI changes, you'd think that they'd have fix the overview state filter by now.
This is why you can't have an overview of only war targets.

Nice work!
About pod GTFO, this may be just superstition and I haven't tested it personally, but I'm 99% sure that:
1) if your ship is aligned to a celestial, when you pop your pod is also aligned to the celestial, so it warps out even faster than usual
2) if you're warp scrambled or disrupted, spamming 'warp' will NOT align your ship to the celestial
So: when you're doomed, hit ALIGN to a random planet first, then start spamming WARP like a boss.
This is common practice in my lowsec neighborhood, but I'd be interested if anyone took the time to test it extensively and prove it's correct (or not) beyond doubt. |

Key thing is that you are spamming WARP at least a couple of seconds prior to ship pop according to the server, so that you beat that Stiletto trying to lock to your pod based on server ticks. What I mean is, if you wait until your pod pops and then hit ALIGN/WARP you are dead. If however you are spamming WARP when you enter structure, when your ship pops on the servers they will receive your WARP request packet in the next available tick, and start processing it before enemies clients have even seen your pod pop (appear on grid).

The idea is to spam warp while you're still in your ship, yes, but hitting align (once) first. Some say it's even more effective than the standard method you described. |

I would advise to turn off all blinking on your overview.
Reason is if you don-Št notice a solid red background on someone there you likely won-Št notice it when it is blinking anyway, but in heavy lag/TD a WT might not instantly appear to have a background at all. Plus blinking might actually cause lag, according to rumour at least. For maximum effect, you might also try the (corporation-)green background, that one gives an even better contrast on the dark scenery than the blood-red one. It needs getting used to it, however, I suppose, as green is usually not associated with danger. Forum-unbanned since 2011.10.20.

Your assertion is incorrect. While it certainly doesn't hurt to align before ship death, it doesn't necessarily help the pod to enter warp faster, either, since pods already have perfect align time.
However, I will say that on more than one occasion, I escaped a fight with my ship in structure (when I had assumed I was dead and was making preparations for pod gtfo), exactly by doing what you describe. It occasionally succeeds because the other guy makes some error, like burning out his afterburner or something, which causes him to unexpectedly lose point.
So doing it your way is probably the best practice anyway.

Many thanks for a useful pro-tip. I knew about using multiple tabs, but none of the other excellent ideas in your blog. Swapping over the chat and overview also makes intuitive sense, but after two months using the defaults this will be hard to adjust to!
Although the advantages of user-defining these options makes sense once done, and the usefulness of the default settings has been mentioned, would it be worth doing a point-by-point critique of the default set-up, so the developers will take note and hopefully incorporate such suggestions into an overhaul of the pilots' U.I.? 30-day skill queue for a 30-day subscription! Many thanks |

The paradox of my thinking is that on one hand I want to reward people that 'dig a little for info on how to be good at EvE' with content such as this, but not spoon feed every carebear out there with this info by default, because then my ability to shoot them in the face will be too negatively impacted... :)
TLDR; If your reading this, or my blog, your welcome to this knowledge. If however you are a nerf-hisec carebear who expects to be protected from war targets dropping on his head 'out of the box', without driving his own learning or research, you should be on your own to figure this stuff out? Thus no to defaults.

How do the guides here compare to the one on eve uni. ie which one would the majority recommend? I remember using the eve uni guide back in the day so is it a little out of date?

Cheers! Doesn't really matter. You should setup your overview for your needs, not someone else's.
The guides are just...ermm... guides.

Actually BJ, give the comments at the bottom of the post a look for PVE insights.
Notwithstanding overlay settings for pve, the local window extraction/resize, icon re-sort and re-color are worth the price of admission of themselves, even for PVE'rs not wanting to get zapped by war deccers, so even if you are too lazy to refactor a provided overlay for PVE as described in the comments, those things alone make said post stand on its own.

I've found if I try to warp while my ship is in structure, my pod warps away immediately. That is to say a few seconds can go by without my hitting warp, and it will still warp the pod out the moment I pop. Anyone else notice this? Excellent tip. I hadn't known of this trick to warp out faster even though I already have a decent overview. As a tackle frigate, I should have plenty of opportunity to practice it
