well here's my view:
Yes to enter the chinese market, requires changing access to the game to the extent they require their own server. That is exactly the reason CCP chose to go there at this time I would imagine.
Even with all the new hardware upgrades - there isnt room for another 25k players on tranquility quite clearly judging by current performance. Therefore - we go to china, and we have to make a new shard by law, and therefore we won't get crucified by our playerbase - and still reap the economic benefits of what amounts to opening another shard.
Legal reasons are neither here nor there - a clone of the eve universe on another server is a shard any way you look at it. I don't have a problem with sharding myself, but the majority of EVE does for some reason. Therefore CCP had to find a way to shard without upsetting its payerbase. The laws in China presented the perfect opportunity and they took it.

Serenity is a second Eve server. The devs are doing this purely because a company over there waved large chunks of cash.

this will not effect Tranquility at all. Atleast it shouldn't. Patches will still be applied here first, then be ported to the chinese version. Now I don't know about EVE, but most MMO's chose to have a different company managing the second shard, so we won't lose dev resources. Take RF Online. Produced in Asia, but you can still play it here. Why? Cause the british company Codemasters has taken the job of porting and releasing a western version. It suffers, because content patches need to be converted first. But the Asian part of the game doesn't suffer from this second shard at all. -------------------------------------

That's an incredibly cynical viewpoint you've taken there but an interesting one none the less.
From my point of view, there's only one EVE universe that I can play in and that's on TQ (obviously excluding SiSi).
Either way, I've been talking about the problems with the current growth in player numbers continuing for a while now. I don't believe Serenity was created to cope with that but was more along the lines of an available business oppurtunity. But hey, if it pulls in the kind of revenue that Oveur's been talking about and that money gets directed at TQ (as he has indicated) then I certainly don't have a problem.
I think people need to remember that for anyone outside of China, CCP aren't sharding TQ and as I have said earlier - I'm not entirely sure that the Chinese are technically allowed to play on TQ in the first place under Chinese law. ______________________ 106 days and still a hijack virgin... Originally by: Misses Gap You see - this has happened before in a world called "Ultima Online". While this game started out being "sharded" already it soon developed a life - and code base - of its own. There was at least one shard that was totally different from Rules, Code and whatnot from the others causing need for manpower being diverted away.
I hope you can understand why I am not speculating as you put it - I rather draw this from my personal experience having been there when UO started-
Left after 5 years due to them making a tweakfeast and a non consistent feel out of it because of the many server types and different code bases.
This ultimately means that there ll be less testing, more bugs.
To focus on your other argument - If it ll be "uni-code" then the gods may help us. The font changes we already had "because we wanted to be able to display Chinese characters" messed up the font badly.
Happened in Jumpgate too, and Netdevil maintained a single codebase for the entire duration of the multi-server era despite radically different playstyles and environments on each. Where's the problem?
As to uni-code, the client is already in full uni-code, so no, it's not going to get worse.
{edit} The reason the Eve community is worried about sharding is generally that they don't want the playerbase split. This will not happen here, so it's not a shard in that respect. Logic 101.
As to existing Chinese players, well, they're not CCP's problem - if anything illegal's being done, it's being done by the players not by CCP.. If they're anyone's problem they're the Chinese government's, and they can probably block access if they want to.

Not everyone. Those that are crazed are those that don't take the time or are too stupid to read what the devs have written.
What "has been written" and what actually happens are two pair of shoes. Sorry to pop your bubble there.
If Eve goes multi-shard or even just multi-code tree, it ll mean more bugs and less testing, thats why there is a craze to those who can read and think.
Or maybe, the new server will have new customers bringing new money in. So ccp will be able to pay to employ new testers so the amount of bugs will go down.
My bubble is still intact.
Oveur has stated in a previous dev blog that the China server will significantly increase revenue and allow them to hire more staff - and indeed that they have already hired more staff.
One sec I'll dig the link out....
Edit: Found it!. It also answers a number of other points in this thread about delayed release times on Serenity etc. Enjoy!
THIS is GOOD enough for me for now - Thanks for the many constructive comments, shame on you few who tried to troll.

I believe I agree with Misses Gap. Other posts really relate IMO to the question of confidence in CCP. It is a natural human phenomenon to place money before idealism. Idealism creates a lot of casualties; firstly oneself. I think everyone can agree that they see the beginning signs already if, as appears, older players are leaving. It is only a question of time.

However, interested by your last comment "Chinese cluster isn't one of those things due to legislation". I was under the impression that one of the main reasons Serenity was happening was *due* to the legislation in China...
Let me start with an apology for not reading your posts then.
As for the legislation part, that is what I am saying. Woo hoo..

I wouldn't worry about China too much. This is a business opportunity for CCP and I can't see any business givng up a shot at such a market as China's.
As much as we say this and that does not work or should be fixed, I am pretty happy with things in EVE. We're not paying mega-bucks for expansions and CCP seems to try really hard to maintain the schedules they put out. I mean I have heard that Blizzard (of WoW) has been promising certain things in expansions and then delivering them on a later date, in a later expansion or pacth (-whatever-) even though players have already paid for it. Putting that way is a jumbled mess so let me rephrase: It means that player T is promised A, B, C and D in an expansion and because there was an f'-up on Blizzard's end somewhere, said player gets A and B in addition to programming that hides the fact that he/she cannot access C and D and doesn't get these features until the next expansion where it could all very well be repeated.
What's point of my saying all of that? The point is people are worrying about nothing especially since things could be worse. This isn't UO and I am certain CCP has done its homework, reading up on why certain ideas fail. I doubt EVE would be the success it is if CCP didn't do the legwork required for success where others failed. And btw, let's all congratulate CCP on its latest award, this award for being "Most Innovative" at E3.

Exactly. If by some strange fluke Eve got as many subscribers as WoW does today, I assume they'd need to split the game into different shards.
The biggest impact would be on the forum community...we wouldn't all be playing in the same political milieu. I assume they'd set up different forums for different shards. But in game it would be just like it is today.
It'll be interesting to see how many players the Chinese cluster can handle...if any sharding is ever going to happen, I bet it'll happen there first.
The bottom line is I see no need to worry about sharding. CCP prefers it all on one cluster...if that becomes a problem at some point, they'll do whatever it is that they need to do to keep the game running. ____________________________________________________________________

It'll be a 2nd shard when you all learn Chinese. As it is you might as well pretend it doesn't exist unless you're one of the few compatible players. This idea that EVE broke its own rule is really pedantic.

I doubt that EVE would have to shard, even if it hit the subscriber base of WoW. With that much income, CCP could buy a warehouse, cool the place, and quadruple or quintuple the server power. Combine that increase in server power with improved load-balancing, funded by millions of subscribers, and you could probably handle 100k players without a problem. That's the beauty of the yarrrdware they just put in, if you need more power, you can just plug more power in. This means Eve has started to go multi "shard" like e.g. Ultima Online does and broke with one of its own rules.
I wonder if this will mean all the things that had happened with UO back then and whether more and more clusters will pop up around the world.
Typically this means that support will be delayed, patches will be "tested" aka deployed on one or the other clusters first and a loss of the genuine feel for "one single big universe".

Well.... I would think that if Eve-Online ever hit the subscriber level of WoW (over 5 million last I heard), they'd probably...
A) Be shyting bricks. B) Significantly increase the hardware like the quoted poster said C) Drastically increase available space and resources to accomodate it.

There is no choice regarding china. CCP had the choice, either give them their own cluster or they can;t play EVE at all.
This is because people from China are technically not allowed to log in to TQ and outsiders are technically not allowed to log into Serenity - there's a host of chinese laws that want to keep everything 'in house'.
Seriously, you can;t blame CCP for wanting to take advantage of the huge chinese market. There won't be a third one anyway, and if time and technique allows, Serenity and Tranquility might one day be joined when the chinese government allows it :)

TECHNICALLY always have been multiple instances of EVE running. The public test server, the private test servers... there all versions of EVE, all be it Temporary. Now theres a fully fledged second one. Its only a matter of time before more come out...

Oh come ON Reiisha. They were quite happy to let Chinese players play. What's happened is a chinese operator's paid a lot of cash to liscence the game.
